hey guys

just wondering is the new a3 bigger thane the old 8p in the boot space, tried to look on brochures but can't find a old brochure.

thanks

J

I think you will find it is a little bit smaller. The front to back measurement on my 8P Sportback was 770mm but the same measurement new 8V is only 730 mm, 40mm smaller. I took particular notice of this when I had various test drives because of the space to get my mobility scooter into the luggage area. According to the Audi information the width of the 8V is 1000mm but my previous 8P was 980mm.

My front to back measurement was taken horizontally from the inside edge of the luggage compartment opening to the back of the rear seats.

Can vouch for Dave's comments. I have a set of three cases that fit snuggly into my 8P lengthways but no longer fit in my 8V the same way. Overall space is bigger though due to slightly more width and the boot floor being lower.

For the A3 maybe but the S3 is definitely smaller. Just looked at the figures (for the Sportback) in a bit more detail and it seems all the new quattro's lose out on boot space.

Non-quattro boot space has gone up from 370 to 380 litres.
Quattro boot space has gone down from 340 to 300 litres.

Yes, the quattros have the non-adjustable boot floor. It doesn't move all that much but makes a massive apparent difference in the amount of room available.

Yep S3 3dr 8V boot space is definitely smaller than 8P.

Also

S3 3dr 8V rear seats have less room than 8P :(

I am surprised its smaller than the car it replaces. Stuff usually gets bigger in the automotive world with the next generation.

^ you're correct, if you go by the dimensions in the brochure, the passenger cabin is supposed to be larger.

But if you sat in the back of a 3dr 8P then 8V with the front seat adjusted similarly, you'd notice the lack of room, and how it's more difficult to get out from the back :(

I have no idea where this increase in space has gone.

Wasn't one of the MQB features that the 8V Sportback had a longer wheelbase than the 8P Sportback and thus had more rear passenger legroom?

^ Apparently so !

But for the 3dr in real life - less knee room in the back, and harder to get out of.

Haven't yet compared a 8P SB with a 8V SB.

I had an 8P SB on loan from work while waiting for mine so had both in quick succession and I would agree with the boot comments on being a bit smaller although I don't care as often don't carry a heck of a lot and it still suits me, seats folded and you have loads of extra room, front and rear passenger space leg and head is a bit bigger I thought, although being 6ft 3" you can still forget about anything approaching an adult sitting behind me without shifting forward a bit for them, as mentioned I think this is what the longer wheel base achieved more than a bigger boot, that and chopping 5 litres or so off the size of the fuel tank but it doesn't matter to me.

i don't think so. i knew the S3 where smaller in the boot as the floor sits higher. but i have a 18week old boy and with all his things i need more space. i was thinking S4 avant but do like my A3 8p so just wondering if the 8V was any bigger.

thanks guys

New crash safety legislation, thicker A & B pillars etc., new interior cabin crash protection, revised roofline heights for occupant safety etc. all leading to reduced packaging space :(
