After Benjie mentioned this in another post it got me thinking as although I'd love a Milltek or similar type exhaust I don't have the funds available but would still like a bit more sound from the car.
So as Benjie mentioned (thanks by the way for the info mate) this seems a popular mod with the American crowd and there's quite a long thread here detailing swapping out the center silencer for a non resonated x pipe:
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/406948-Exhaust-Mod-Resonator-replaced-w-X-Pipe-(video)
I've read through the whole thread several times and watched the videos probably far too many times than is normal/healthy and as expected most people like it with the odd few saying they weren't keen so went for a full exhaust replacement or went back to stock config. It's quite difficult getting a true representation as on most of the videos the mics aren't the best anyway.
Cut to the chase I've decided to give it a go as the part is only around £90 delivered and the labour I have been quoted for is £40 an hour labour and estimated to take no longer than two hours (one company wanted £320 labour but more on that later). So part is ordered and I'll get it next week but probably won't have time to get it fitted until the following week or maybe the week after.
I think I will probably like the sound as most complaints say the car sounds too raspy, comparing it to an e46 M3 which I happen to like the sound of. Worse case I can put the old center silencer back on and it's cost me a few hundred quid as an expensive mistake.
The exact part I have ordered is the Magnaflow 10790 Tru X Pipe from:
eBay - Item # 111414754173
I ordered over the phone as wanted to chat to them first to see if it was in stock and see what they were like:

Very helpful and knowledgeable so far.
I'm planning on getting it fitted by a company called Roar Power in Birmingham as I rang up one near Heathrow call Profusion Customs who were the ones trying to charge arouynd £300 labour. Seems expensive to me as all the guys in America were also being charged around $100 labour.
So there you go, will let you all know how it works out in case anyone else is interested maybe even as a temp stop gap while saving for a full stainless offering from Milltek/Capristo etc.
Cheers
Mat
