After Benjie mentioned this in another post it got me thinking as although I'd love a Milltek or similar type exhaust I don't have the funds available but would still like a bit more sound from the car.

So as Benjie mentioned (thanks by the way for the info mate) this seems a popular mod with the American crowd and there's quite a long thread here detailing swapping out the center silencer for a non resonated x pipe:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/406948-Exhaust-Mod-Resonator-replaced-w-X-Pipe-(video)

I've read through the whole thread several times and watched the videos probably far too many times than is normal/healthy and as expected most people like it with the odd few saying they weren't keen so went for a full exhaust replacement or went back to stock config. It's quite difficult getting a true representation as on most of the videos the mics aren't the best anyway.

Cut to the chase I've decided to give it a go as the part is only around £90 delivered and the labour I have been quoted for is £40 an hour labour and estimated to take no longer than two hours (one company wanted £320 labour but more on that later). So part is ordered and I'll get it next week but probably won't have time to get it fitted until the following week or maybe the week after.

I think I will probably like the sound as most complaints say the car sounds too raspy, comparing it to an e46 M3 which I happen to like the sound of. Worse case I can put the old center silencer back on and it's cost me a few hundred quid as an expensive mistake.

The exact part I have ordered is the Magnaflow 10790 Tru X Pipe from:

eBay - Item # 111414754173

I ordered over the phone as wanted to chat to them first to see if it was in stock and see what they were like:

Very helpful and knowledgeable so far.

I'm planning on getting it fitted by a company called Roar Power in Birmingham as I rang up one near Heathrow call Profusion Customs who were the ones trying to charge arouynd £300 labour. Seems expensive to me as all the guys in America were also being charged around $100 labour.

So there you go, will let you all know how it works out in case anyone else is interested maybe even as a temp stop gap while saving for a full stainless offering from Milltek/Capristo etc.

Cheers

Mat

i like the look of that mate videos once done please hahaha

Will certainly try mate, just need to see if I can get hold of something better than my iPhone as not convinced the sound would be any good.

Glad I was of help, whole point of a forum. I too would like a video, especially of the inside at cruising speed. Is your manual or S Tronic? I'm 50:50 on this or a full exhaust system!

Will try and sort something out. Will do a test video as the car is at the moment and see what the quality is like. Might see if anyone I know has a digi camcorder with a reasonable mic. :icon thumright:

Mines an S-Tronic so will be interesting to see if the drone around 2-2.5k becomes an issue. Some owners on the link I posted say it's not bad others say they thought it did drone but as with most things I guess it's down to personal taste.

Keep me posted too mAte, same situation as you really, want more sound but not spending that much in an exhaust system...

Sounds good mate, not too far away either!
I look forward to hearing it, I will have to open my window next time we cross :)

I would really like mine to sound better, I have the fake soundaktor - tempted to pull the fuse to see how it sounds without.

No problem at all. Booked in for Friday 12th so will feed back as soon as possible after that. Fingers crossed!!

Yep it's worked out quite well. So far they seem good on the phone but time will tell. As said above booked in for Friday 12th. Really looking forward to finding out how it sounds!

Yep wind the window down the following week and I'll try and give you a blast

Joking aside not sure if you would want to go down the x pipe route but you can always have a listen after work one day.

Ps, would pulling the fuse stop the sound from being piped in via the speakers? Does it sound a bit artificial at the mo?

Also curious to know if the x pipe has any adverse effects to emissions...? Ie will it still pas mot. I presume so as all it does is replace the silencer?

Hiya, yeah I think it should be fine and it's just the cat removal that would affect emissions. I'm guessing it's similar to buy a milltek non res which I assume would still pass an mot.

As far as I'm aware the centre silencer just acts as a silencer along with acting as a kind of cross pipe. I think one guy in the states fitted straight through pipes and found the car didnt run well with timing issues. I think the x pipe creates a certain amount of resistance/balancing for each bank of the v6 engine but not very techie on the mechanics side of things. I'm sure someone else in here could clarify.

Will keep you posted on the sound

Hi Guys,

Initial impression is not that great if I'm honest. When we gave it a rev in the workshop I liked the sound from the outside, quite raspy but then the std exhaust is a bit raspy anyway and I don't mind that. It just sounds too boomy to me lower down the rev range and overall too loud for my taste. Maybe I'm getting old before my time but I think I am going to go back to standard next week. It cost £140 for the labour and will cost the same again to put back so an expensive mistake on my part. I sat through most of it and it took quite a while, over 3 hours in the end. Can't fault the job done by roar power to be fair to them.

I've not heard anything from the likes of miltek but would imagine a resonated milltek would sound more like what I was after, just a bit louder than stock. Bit annoyed with myself really!

Will get some videos over the weekend and upload so you can have a listen.

Cheers

Mat

Not sure mate, I did wonder that but the chap at roar power didn't seem to think so. Think it's just too much for me which is a shame but hey it's done now. Will drive it for a few days and see if it changes at all.

That's a shame. But helps me out...;) did they have to take the exhaust off the car to weld?

No all welding done on the car, well at one point the x pipe was off on the bench having some stuff done to it.

Whereabouts are you based?
Would be keen to listen before you remove.
I'm about 35 mins east of Birmingham airport...well not right now but normally I am.
Ever over that side ?

Hiya mate, not normally over that way I'm afraid, you are more than welcome to have a listen but it's booked in on Wednesday morning so would have to be before then I'm afraid. Would normally say I'd drive half way but got loads to get done this weekend as trying to get the house sorted for when the little one arrives!!

No worries. I am in Spain until Wednesday anyway so no chance. Just get some good vids then and that will be cool

Hi buddy , interested in your thread . Would you say that your x pipe mod has made it sound like a milltek non-resonated system if you've seen videos on you tube etc or even louder than that. My understanding is on the milltek non-res they keep the centre silencers and do away with the rear silencers.

I think I'm tempted to go and listen to the stasis touring exhaust on one of revos demo cars.

This is the sound I want
Doesn't seem to drone

magrillz - I'm sorry I ever mentioned this now, I always thought they sounded good on the videos - though I suppose you can never be sure until you hear it yourself!

Hey Benjie, please don't worry mate you were just pointing out an option. I too thought it sounded good on the videos. It could have sounded awesome and would have been a bargain mod.

I'm surprised of how many of the guys from the states liked it as it just sounds really cheap and nasty in person. The wife was mortified

Hiya Davie,

Really not sure as I think it's quite hard to say from the vids. The factory rear silencers are made from stainless which seem to be quite raspy and now that the centre silencers gone that really exaggerates the raspiness.

I would definitely make sure what ever you get has a centre silencer as the drone was in my opinion unacceptable. Kind of goes straight through you.

I think if I was doing it properly I'd guess I'd go for something like a milltek resonated but also interested in the likes from rsc and stasis. I'd say even if you had to travel for hours I'd try and find someone/somewhere where you could have a listen.

Hope this helps.

Not sure what's happening with double posts, keep getting an error 29 on tap talk so have to retry but then get a double post

Sounds much better, definitely worth listening too. How much do try go for? Guessing around 1.5 - 2k like the milltek?

Thanks mate , well after many hours you-tubing and the price and availability of shipping to Norway ive opted for the Milltek non-res lol. Had millteks before on other cars ive owned and always been happy with them

Thanks. You never know, maybe mention a different exhaust to the wife and see if she puts it in your stocking for Christmas!!
