Getting the car serviced and thinking of going for a 507.00 long life oil, but still changing it every 10,000 miles.
Is this the best option or am i overlooking a better option.

So in short which oil type and which brand?

Most stick with Quantum or Castrol Edge.

There's some incredibly cheap 504. 00/ 507. 00 cheap on ebay

Stick to a decent 505.01 in 5w40 flavour, fully synthetic as well...

What are the benefits of a 505.01 5w40 over the 507.00 5w30?

Why a 505.01 5w 40 , Chris ?
Because the 507 spec oil is **** thin at 100 Celsius and it's only beneficial to newer cars fitted with a DPF due to low ash content...5w40 is a better choice and stops cam wear ...

Normally I would agree 5w 40 v 5w 30 of the same quality at 100°c is no competition.

But the 5w 30 LongLife 507.00 is a higher quality oil as it was designed to last longer. A higher additive package gives it better lubrication , thermal stability , anti shear etc.

It's a stronger oil. Small economy gains too.

If people have experienced cam wear using it that would be down to the stupid LongLife 20k service interval.

Trust me mate, use 5w40 oil and you won't have no trouble whatsoever... 5w30 is just a marketing ploy and no amount of additive package will save your cams from eating themselves- the dealer only specced that servicing interval due to being attractive to first time buyers- they only service the car once in their possession then they pass it on when the car is 3 years old ! Also dealer does not give a damn about 2nd hand buyers, if it brings them more work then it's all good !

Also think about all that ash held in suspension by the thinner oil, it will clog the oil filter quicker then the bypass valve opens and all un-filtered oil is pumped trough the engine- i have never seen cars on standard servicing intervals worn more than cars on Longlife servicing...

Still not convinced as I'm blaming the 20k service interval. The best opinion would be from Opie Oils

hmmm what a surprise a difference of opinion on t'internet. :distrust:

Ok so on a bit of further research i think adams24's idea is the best. The car doesn't have a DPF so 507.00 doesn't seem a must and the extra viscosity of the 5w40 would seem beneficial and might even lead to a slightly more refined sounding engine.

Do more research.

507 00 is the higher quality oil and less likely to break down.

A lesser quality can become a 30 or 20 at high temps.

Small power/torque and mpg gains with 5w 30.

507 00 is the highest quality oil spec.

508 00 is designated but yet to be produced or speced.

Instead of looking at oil specs, i WILL look for a high zinc content oil and with the right weight, **** thin oils will do no good regardless of how good the additive package is ! A tri-ester fully synthetic oil is to be desired and not some claims to "meet" the 507 Vw spec/requirement... Highly strung engines don't require 0w30 oils but 10w60 fully synthetic tri ester oils... You put what you like in yours, cannot change your mind !

Maybe I'll just put 507.00 & 505.01 in 50:50 to hedge my bets!!:)

Web performance overlays for

5w 40 505.01
0w 30 506.01
5w 30 507.00

As you can see the latter out performs the rest filling more of the web.
