My 2010 S3 Sportback Black Edition Progress Thread!

Wee update.

Got a bit of spare time yesterday afternoon to fit my B8's, Eibach springs and Brembo HP2000 pads, not a bad job at all just tricky to wrestle the struts in and of the hub even with the hub spread using the spreader tool, had a little helper passing me tools though haha :)

So much better visually and the improvement in handling is immediately evident, not had it our for a proper run yet but turn in is much more precise the car is less crashy over bumps and less bouncy over a fast up/down stretches of motorway I commute on. One extra bonus which I didn't expect is a little increase in steering weight, I've always found the S3 to be too light in steering and lacking feel a bit but this has definitely been improved with these suspension changes, I read that the ALK also does the same so really look forward to doing that now too.

Pads will be properly bed in tonight after work when the roads are quiet so will report more on them later.

Another little parcel arrived yesterday too, big thanks to N8 for a great deal on this near new LOBA HPFP, I'll get that fitted next week along with the ALK then off for a 4 wheel alignment :)

Muzza glad you got it sorted in the end with the B8s, they make a big difference, loving mine. LOBA fitted yesterday and you can notice it. Happy days

Oh yeaaaa, I see now.

I must have forgotten how high the s3 is as standard haha

Hopefully it'll settle a bit more too as there looks to be a bit of reverse rake going on.

looks good stage 2 looming then? I did the HPFP internals on my ed30 with my GIAC maps i could switch between two and before the swap out there wasn't much between the pump and race but after the swap the race was far better might have been the placebo but that was 2009 so you may notice more with the pump but your current map will need sorted.

I fitted my Airtec Stage 2 intercooler from the group buy I secured today along with Doogie from here who very kindly offered to let me use his place so we could do them both and have a spare pair of hands each. Doogie actually started his the night before with his mate and had made good headway already by the time I arrived this morning which actually was kinda fortunate for me as he'd already run into the few snags which made it easier 2nd time around.

100% a job for two people, one person could not do this on their own, you really need to extra hands to support bits and what not.

Mine went fairly smoothly, headlight plugs were a mare, getting the bolts/holes to line up on the new cooler on the left hand side was fiddly and required a little trimming to the lower radiator mounting bracket. Some of the holes dont look like they will line up but they do if you are methodical and only screw stuff in a bit at a time then move on to another corner.

Make sure you keep all fittings together in groups in bags or in a multi section tray, there's so many. One things that's not included with the kit is two M10 x 100 bolts, they are really useful, you replace one of the chassis leg bolts at each side with one of these first then remove the other 6, as they're so long it allows you to move all the rads out while supporting them and makes it much easier to disconnect stuff.

Getting the old IC out and new one in is tight, be careful not to bend the AC rad pipes.

We were on a tight schedule as i had to get back to Glasgow to pick up my wee boy from Nursery so not many pics im afraid but a couple here to give you an idea of the amount that needs removed, this was the point where I was kinda like omg what have i done to my car lol

We took maybe 2 hours to finish the second half of Doogies then mine took 3 hours total, not too bad, if I was doing it again 3 hours should see the job through with two people.

My drive home was rush hour so no chance to give it a blast but this evening I also fitted my Loba HPFP and ive had the car out for a good run tonight, baring in mind I'm only shark stage 1 with intake, cooler and now HPFP but honestly, it's like a different car I'm quite gobsmacked, the increase in mid-range torque is 100% noticible compared to before fitting them both and it pulls earlier, harder, longer and smoother than before fitting, no doubt about it. Feels to me if I had to guess like 30-40 ft/lb more torque over the modest 290 ft/lb I run a few weeks back, cant wait to get them mapped in now.

Unfortunately I cant tell if that's the cooler, the HPFP or both, I suspect the latter, would have been nice to RR it after just fitting the cooler but didnt make sense to throw another £70 at a dyno session just to see, sorry guys.

Big thanks again to Doogie, cracking lad and very decent of him to have me over, oh and his car's an absoloute weapon lol

Absolute pleasure Murray. Feel free anytime to ask to use the space again if you ever want to fit anything. Your S3 is beautiful btw. Was an honour to have it in my drive, haha.

Great job Muzza, had my pump on a week now and feels just like you described. Acceleration in 4th 5th is greatly improved. Much smoother all the way. Can't wait for the remap.

Didn't realise this much of the car had to be removed the Audi workshop manual seemed to just remove the bumper to get to the rads!

Great update. I want those front springs on mine to lower the front end to match the rear. Sits perfectly yours.

Is that your car in Gordon's for some detailing?

Sure is mate, did you see it on his FB page?

He's been at it for 4 days, should be looking pretty special once finished and going for a high end sealant to keep it looking good for as long as possible and make washing easier (live in a flat, struggle with a good washing routine unfortunately)

Hopefully get it back Wednesday morning :)

PA Cosmic mate, talked to Gordon in depth about the other options and settled on that.

Believe it or now, that second pic is just naked paint after a single stage correction, he's been in the unit late tonight applying the Cosmic as it needs a full 24 hours to cure.

Cannot wait to see it now lol!

It will be minted, they claim well over a years protection on the Cosmic that's some going. you've got it applied at the right time judging by the weather.

Had to rush off to get my 4 wheel hunter alignment done straight after picking up the car from Gordon @ Defined Details

Had booked it into Pro-Grip in Bonnybridge a couple of weeks back, John has an excellent reputation and talked me through the whole process, it was quite out of alignment and needed a fair bit of adjustment both front and back. The drive home just reiterated to me how important alignment is and it should never be overlooked, a very noticeable difference, much sharper steering and cornering and he managed to get rid of the dead spot the steering seemed to have when at motorway speeds dead centre, very impressed.

New to forum and came across this thread, love the car and subtle mods mate!
I think the RS Rotar alloys looked better IMO but the BBS have their own presence.

Have u got a link for the wind deflectors you got?
They look MUCH better than Heko's which everyone has on their cars nowadays.

Thanks!

Paint work looks perfect. Waiting for a good day to paint correct mine and give a deep shine.

Been trying to find a unit I can hire for the weekend, or someones double garage, not found anywhere yet. Hate living in apartments with open air car parks. Cant do any decent cleaning sessions.

Here you go mate: eBay - Item # 261517052082

I really like them now they have been on a few weeks. They're stick on rather than in channel, very quiet, excellent fit and quality cant really fault them.
