I have a 2006 A3 with the Bi-Xenon headlamps. The drivers side one tends to flicker and yesterday on leaving a car park it went out and the DIS displayed a bulb failure message. I switched them off and back on and it is working again. From various searches I understand this is quite a common fault abd its best to swap the bulbs over to see whether it is the bulb, ballast or something in the light fitting itself causing the issue.
I am a little confused about how to get access to the bulbs as I have read different information which seems to vary depending on the age of the car and the type of headlamp. I have included a photo below. Is the clip at the top only supplying the power and control wires for the headlamp? So the bulb is located below it and hence why people say to remove the bumper and move the headlamp forward to get access via the wheel arch? I understand the ballast is separate and located under the headlamp?
I have seen reference to one type where the ballast clips onto the back of the bulb and its accessible from the engine bay. I think this is on the facelift version though.

Can you see any condensation inside the headlight lens? I had the same problem last winter and discovered that it was due to condensation in the headlight lens. Parked it facing into the sun (albeit winter sun) for a couple of days and the problem was gone.

Yeah, I'll throw in my experiences (but not necessarily facts). I think what was happening was that the lens had condensation in it, meaning that the lights would originally switch on fine, but then, once the condensation becomes vapour (bi-xenon lights get *hot*) then it causes the lamp to flicker for a few minutes (maybe moisture gets into the contacts). Eventually, they get pulled out of circuit (maybe by Canbus) and the DIS shows a warning.
When my Audi dealer told me I'd have to start replacing various expensive parts to 'see if the problem goes away' then I went all 'Columbo' on the problem and found the simplest dry-out solution possible.

When i bought my Audi A3 (55reg) with factory fitted xenons, one of them kept flickering and sometimes would just go off (would have to turn the headlights off and on again it would stay on for a while before going out again)
Had a friend of mine who is good at changing awkward headlight bulbs change the xenon bulb (D1S bulb) and been fine since, so I would definitely change the bulb and see how it goes.

The driver side bulb can be changed WITH difficulty without having to remove the bumper ect, however I think the bumper/wheel arch liner will need removing to do the passenger side bulb
