I have a 2006 A3 with the Bi-Xenon headlamps. The drivers side one tends to flicker and yesterday on leaving a car park it went out and the DIS displayed a bulb failure message. I switched them off and back on and it is working again. From various searches I understand this is quite a common fault abd its best to swap the bulbs over to see whether it is the bulb, ballast or something in the light fitting itself causing the issue.
I am a little confused about how to get access to the bulbs as I have read different information which seems to vary depending on the age of the car and the type of headlamp. I have included a photo below. Is the clip at the top only supplying the power and control wires for the headlamp? So the bulb is located below it and hence why people say to remove the bumper and move the headlamp forward to get access via the wheel arch? I understand the ballast is separate and located under the headlamp?
I have seen reference to one type where the ballast clips onto the back of the bulb and its accessible from the engine bay. I think this is on the facelift version though.
