Hi I was think about getting my car windows tinted I don't want them to be pitch black. I have seen some audi's with them tinted was wondering if anyone knows the percentage that audi put on their windows plus what is the percentage you can have on the front two? Any help would be great or if anyone knows a good place to get them done in the north west of England.

Thanks jon

Don't know what the spec. for the rears is, but if you put anything on the glass forward of the B pillars, it will be illegal. They are max. from the factory. From 'How legal is your vehicle?' :-

  • Heavily-tinted windows will seriously reduce your view in certain weather conditions and most definitely at night time. The legal requirements allowed are 75 per cent of light through the front windscreen and 70 per cent of light through the front side door glasses. Any rear door glasses and rear window are not included in this requirement so they can be as heavily tinted as you like.
  • We do have instruments which can now measure the severity of a tinted window. If a window is found to be too heavily tinted the motorist could be subject to a £30 Fixed Penalty Notice or reported to court

I've see a few cars with tint on the front two windows ? Just not as dark? Is it illegal even to have a slight tint ?

As fangio said you are allowed to tint your front side windows just make sure its no more than 30% you needs to allow 70% of light through, so yes you can do a slight tint

Ok thanks. I'll have a look into it more when I've got some money together.

Got 95% rears and 30 fronts.. dont go for 95% cant see anything in the afternoon, not to mention night, thank god i have parking sensors..

If i had to do it again i would go for 80% or something

I've got 95% on the rears and 50% on the front 2 windows
95% is really dark for the rear to be honest, especially without parking sensors :D, but I've been used to it with previous cars, the fronts at night are perfect but I always think I should have had them 60% when looking at them in the day.

Having said that, my interior is full black leather, black door cars and black roof lining, so looks darker than it should :D !

Got my car tinted on Monday...by a mate who deals with different car dealerships to do body wrapping and tinting.
He told me you can have whatever darkness you wish in the back windows and side windows. Audi have 20-25% dark smoke.
On the fronts you must have at least 75% light come through. I asked him to tint front he said it's not worth it as the difference is not noticeable as most car manufactures already tint the glass slightly to reflect harmful uv rays.

I think 95% maybe be abit much lol I think I might even go for the 30% on the back or 40% that looks good to me. I didn't know they did a smoke tint. I do think mine has a very slight tint but prob about 5% or 10%. What sort of price am I looking at to do just the back windows but I do have 5 doors so I imagine it will cost more.

Thanks again for the advice

plus a chance of 3 points either side if caught

omy193 that tint wouldn't last 5 mins in Sheffield if would have a probo and you would have 6 points.

I think 80% on the rears is a reasonable tint, and all depends on the area you are in and who you use. Ive used the same guy 3 times and sent friends and family to him also so looks after me on the price. I paid £150 for all windows apart from windscreen

and bez101, my tints are quite modest! you should see some of the tints around here mate!
Ive seen a car with Limo rears, limo front and windscreen quite dark too!

You don't go out in that after dark, surely? :undwech:

I always used to have limo all round.
but sinse the points are been handed out like sweets I don't have any done
I just don't think they look right tinted at the back none up front.

Isn't it like driving a van just using the two side mirrors surely u can't see out the back window with 95%

Yeah does look funny with just the rears dark and none on the front at all.

And to be honest its not as bad as it sounds, on a dark road thats not lit up well you cant see out the back.
But on the normal city roads where there are street lamps and others driving behind with headlights on ect its fine.

Sure use 30% I got it on round

Yeh think I may go for the 30% that seems enough do you have problems seeing at night tho or is it ok ?

You'll have no problems at all with 30% tint. Itl be like no tint at all lol. I think you should go for 50% tint atleast on the rears.

No alright in the night, it only lets 30% of light in so basically tints it by 70%

Then I add the 35 ish factory tint
