Hi Guys,

Hoping some others that have the 3.0TDI Tip might be able to add to this to see if it's just mine that does it and I've got a problem or if they all do it.

I've noticed occasionally when it changes from 3rd to 4th and I'm holding the rpm steady around 3.5K prior to the change, it seems to change once, then a few seconds later change again.
It's almost as if it's slipping as it trys to change into 4th, then all of a sudden does change. The change is still smooth.

Apart from that it seems fine. It doesn't do it if I'm hard on the power, or at even lower speeds, just seems to be around 3-4K.

Going to do a fluid change soon, fingers crossed that might help. I'm really hoping it's not a valve boy/solenoid issue.

Thanks

Ed.

Get it scanned for fault code as they may be logged

Hi, Eddy

I've got the same combo as you, but I haven't experienced that behaviour with it. Fingers crossed a scan and/or an ATF change gets to the bottom of it.

Hi Ed

I have the same system you have and have therefore read most of the threads regarding Tiptronic g/box issues to get an an overview for any future problems I may have myself.

Try mimicking the change from 3rd to 4th in manual/sport mode with the paddles and see if it does the same thing at that rev range.
If it does, you may have a mechanical/electronic issue (band solenoid) and further investigation will be necessary.
If not, the information below may help.

You have adaptive automatic transmission which adjusts its shift performance and how frequently it changes gears based on how the car is driven. If you use a light touch on the throttle and seldom floor the accelerator pedal, the transmission's electronic controls will adapt to those patterns by providing smoother shifts and changing to higher gears sooner. On the other hand, an adaptive transmission will respond to aggressive driving with crisper shifts and quicker down-shifts for passing.

All vehicles with adaptive transmissions use microprocessors that read signals from sensors to decide when or if the transmission should shift. Ford, for example, says that during hard cornering, the transmission may hold off on shifting even if the accelerator is floored or released.

Adaptive transmissions not only adjust based on how a vehicle is driven but also where. If the transmission recognizes that you're driving in hills or mountains, it might not shift to the highest gear because it knows it will probably have to down-shift soon to maintain your momentum uphill.

The reason I tell you this is that you can delete the "adaptive learning history" with VCDS and then start with fresh reboot and it will "learn" your style of driving form scratch. Whilst this is unlikely to alter an individual change, it may remove quick change behaviour and therefore introduce smoother changes throughout the entire range.

Hope this helps you.

All the best and let me know how you get on.

Thanks for that Marty, I'll give it a go.

Was just about to order some ATF and bits and get a flush done, just trying to work out which fluid is it that's needed in my 2005 model, fairly sure the part number Audi just gave me is for a manual transmission, useful.
Probably work getting the fluid changed anyway as it's done 101K now so won't do it any harm.

Let me know how you get on. If I can help further I'm happy to do so.

I may be wrong but land rover discovery 3 uses the same zf box and there are service kits for sale on ebay
Theres a few other car makers who also use the same zf box.

interesting thread... may pull up a seat...

my 3.0tdi does this.. i'm lead to believe its a characteristic of the box..

also had my gearbox oil changed by a ZF Specialist who i believe did a hot flush of the box..

must say box drives sweet ever since ive had this done... so sweet makes me never wanna get rid of the car LOL

Right well I've tried to replicate it several times this evening in manual mode, and I can't.
So next stage is to sort out VCDS and clear everything the box has learnt and start from scratch and see if that cures it, hopefully it will.
Will still do a fluid change though. Just need to read the software version from the ECU so I know which oil it has.

That's good news Ed

Did you try in auto again to check it was still there and it just wasn't doing it right then?
I suggest next time you feel it in auto, try the manual test immediately so the fluid is the same temperature etc. just as a direct comparison.

If you're changing the fluid, use the best quality and specification fluid and replace the filter (if it has one).
Make sure you do the fluid change and drive it for a while before you re-set the adaptive or vice versa so you can confirm which process made the difference if any.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

how does 1 go about doing this in VCDS? i'd have thought they would have done this at the gearbox specialist.. although they werent audi specialists mind you...

Connect VCDS
Interrogate the gearbox section
Find adaptive re-set
Hit the button and re-set

Then drive in the normal manner and the G/Box learns how you drive and adjusts itself accordingly.

did it work?? ive not got my car at the minute to try it...

any feedback would be much appreciated!!

I had a look on VCDS but couldn't find how to reset the adaptive part, need to spend more time on it as only had 5 mins but not had chance yet, need to borrow a lead from a friend.
