How many 2.0 tdi (BKD) owners have had to replace the turbo?

If any of you remember on certain Audi cars, Audi fitted a plastic disc to the rear calipers as customers were saying their cars sounded like a cow mooing when breaking after reversing.. strange but true. I believe the downpipe bracket is under the car and fixes to the cross member or bulkhead.... I hope this work for some of you

I'd be interested to know if this worked for anyone.

Awesome GTI diagnosed my issue as a imminent turbo failure last week while having my car serviced, however due to them being 60 miles away it wasn't feasible to have the turbo done there.

Having it done at a local garage and they decided to strip suspect parts on the car first after hearing the same noise on a 2.0 seat leon tdi to see if it could be anything else. They said in terms of the turbo it looks fine and the ball is in my court.

Due to it only costing around £500 fitted, for peace of mind after hearing some horror stories on here i'm having it done but if the noise does develop in future then i'll look at this solution.As well my car is on 82k, which does sound like a likely age for a turbo to fail on a BKD, whining noise and metal part or not.

35k - turbo replaced by Audi
60k - turbo replaced by Audi
65k - turbo replaced by Audi
70k - turbo replaced by Audi
117k - turbo replaced with ECP 'OE Quality' turbo £1k
118k - turbo replaced again 10 days later. A day after the previous turbo was fitted the siren started again

All replaced for the whistling / siren noise but never actually gone pop (he says crossing his fingers)

Also had 3 EGR coolers and 2 heads in it's lifetime but I do tend to buy cars with 'history'

Most turbos sound like a kind of slightly whistling hiss, is the best description I can think of. The police siren noise sounds like a wheel bearing has gone, but links with engine power not road speed.
 
I had to replace mine only 2 weeks after I bought the car! Wasn't happy but seems to be all sorted now with a recon standard turbo fitted under warranty.

2008 (57 Plate) 140bhp 2.0 TDI BKD Sport with DSG

66,500 miles

Standard

Total bill was £1060, but as I say it was covered by warranty so I didn't actually pay it. Would have been very angry if I had bought the car privately with no warranty though.
 
2004 BKD 180remap 187000 miles changed turbo 3 times in the last 8 years I think the main issue is the turbos get abused hard driving on cold engine, and not giving them enough time to cool down before turning off the engine etc. I have been running a hybrid for past 2 years and look look after it better with regular decent oil changes, still is working very well :)
 
That's the thing - letting them slow down before switching off. If you switch off as soon as you stop, the turbo could still be doing thousands of rpm with no oil supply.
 
Mine is in now having the turbo changed 65k MY09 £1200. The worst bit is the warranty company have just said they will only pay £500 towards it :-( never told me about that when I phoned them.

The siren/whistle was getting a bit on the loud side, could hear it going up the road
 
Im on 104k atm and as far as i can tell the car hasn't had a new turbo which is a good and a bad sign :(

Be VERY careful.

I was informed due to the owl under the bonnet that i needed a new turbo. I actually bought a new unit myself & had Awesome fit it. I then still had the owl under the bonnet so was a complete waste of time & money.

I will never change a turbo again until it falls over on its ****
 
I have the police siren noise on original turbo done 120K. But turbo still running well and pulls fine.

Should i change?
 
My turbo was running ok, I have only changed it as at the time the warranty company said they would pay for it, it now appears they will only pay £500 so I'm a bit ****** off. I was going to use the spare cash for a remap.
 
04 plate 8P1 - replaced at 132k. Was standard but after the new turbo I did an EGR delete and remap.

Is it over boosting and dropping into limp mode? If so then I would, if not then wait until it starts to die.
 
2006 Plate, Standard engine, no mods. 140BHp version, not 170.

Turbo replaced at 98,000 miles by Audi and lasted 3 weeks, turbo then replaced again by Audi under warranty and so far so good.

BKD's are known for having turbo's go, wish I had known before I brought!
 
My car started making the noise just after I bought it so that's the only reason I insisted it was repaired under warranty. To be honest as there was no loss in performance and based on what I read while researching it, I wouldn't bother changing it unless it gets noticeably worse in a short space of time or starts throwing it in to limp mode.

I got advice from an Audi mechanic and his diagnosis was "yes if it was under an Audi warranty we would replace it, but if you're not suffering loss of performance or limp mode, it's a case of how annoying you find the noise as to whether you get a new turbo right now".
 
RSW46, my Turbo was supposedly replaced purely from the sound it was making (whistling but not the siren noise)

Took car to Audi for a service and they picked up on the turbo noise and suggested it to be replaced, I declined but noticed it more and more especially during gear changes (off and on the power) and so decided to change in case it took out my engine and cost a hell of allot more. I was surprised Audi could detect an issue with it purely from the sound it made but still had the whistling noise, so took it back and they cnaged it again. Few days later, noticed the same noise, so took it back but they insisted it was noise from my badly worn flywheel, which I knew needed changing.

Had that changed about a week ago and still the same noise, tempted to take it back to Audi........again!
 
And no Limp Mode or loss of power with either turbo or the original. All based on noise!?
 
Exactly. Its like an old wives tale. The turbo whistles so it must be knackered. Perhaps it likes Roger Whittaker.....

The lad at CR Turbos says hes had some sent for refurb because they are so called totalled & nothing but a service required
 
On 104K on a 2007 2.0TDI 140bhp. Still on its original turbo and clutch. Just waiting for something to go POP!

Yeah it's a strange one, because although it's not supposed to make the police siren noise apparently they can go on and on like it, but I wouldn't be worried about a normal Turbo whistle, that's just what happens when you spin something at hundreds of thousands of rpm I guess haha. My old car, a Corsa 1.3cdti made a really loud whistle compared to my A3 with the recon turbo it now has on it.

Sounds like they don't know what they're talking about with your car though, if I were you I'd take it to another garage for a second opinion; don't tell them what the first garage said though, just let them have a listen and see what they come up with :)
 
Yeap a3 2.0 bkd 97k blew bits hater the engine
 
i have a 2007 2.0 TDI 77k on the clock, had DMF and clutch replaced before i bought the car, i have a whistle from turbo an owl sound but no pop so im happy as a bunny :D

I would - the first two times mine was on the way out 1st time a screeching sound like brake noise whenever it cut in- later turned out to be an oil pump blockage which killed the turbo :( 2nd time was the owl noise so i changed it. 3rd time i had the owl noise and drove it for ages thinking it would be ok then one day i was pulling away onto a motorway and a really loud pop and the turbo went. The real issue was the car then started revving by itself and i had to stall it in 6th gear before it destroyed itself! it also completely smoke screened the motorway causing everyone to stop! embarrassed a little :dejection:

A3 2.0 Tdi 140 (BKD) 2005 I've owned from new.

Police siren noise always present at low engine speeds, it's not a worry, just a feature of a freely spinning turbo.

It's now done 214,000 miles and still pulls like a train.

Last MOT, emissions were 0.58, nearly half the plate value of 1.0.

I wonder how many turbos have been needlessly replaced over the years!?
