Howdy folks.

Never owned a VAG car before, and I've somehow ended up with a 2002 Audi A6 Avant SE 1.9 TDi. I'm basically after some tips, hints and I'll have a few questions.

My car appears to have the 130bhp 'AVF' engine, and is a 6 speed FWD. The only issues with it really, are:

Front Drivers Window will drop around 30%, any more and it won't come back up. Knackered motor / gear?

Remote Central Locking doesn't work on either key. I'm going to try batteries although the previous owner says they were fine, the car unlocks with the key in the drivers door, and when you turn to the 2nd ignition click the central locking unlocks and alarm deactivates. The 2 buttons on the door activate the central locking correctly. I understand this is most likely to be the unit in the passenger footwell or a sync issue?

Drivers door has dropped slightly so doesn't correctly latch / shut all the time.

All in all, it seems like a pretty decent bit of kit for what it is. I've ended up with it as I needed a big car I could cram a lot in, commute a long way, and would be economic, and it seems to do that job well. Once I've worked the niggles and it's mechanically 100% I'd like to retrofit leather and a nicer steering wheel, probably some different wheels, it currently has 16".

Interested to hear any common problems, things to check, and general good advice. It's my first diesel too. I usually do my own maintenance, but I've never serviced a diesel, I'm assuming it's basically the same as a petrol minus spark plugs? I understand it's considered important to use the correct oil in these engines?

Cheers,

Matt

Almost certainly the wire cable that drives the wndow up and down.

Remove the door panel to check,. Small screw at the top left and right hand edge.
Screwdrive underneath to lift out the switch panel.
The whole window frame comes out of the door and a new regulator frame and cable drop in on 4 rivets.
Drill out the old ones undersized and tap out or the new ones won't hold.
About £40 to £50 from Eurocarparts.
Some places do a replacement cable but they don't last long IMHO.
Reset your door at the same time as its a lot easier with the door panel only.
Both hinge and striker panel will move/relocate.

Could be both check function with VCDS/VagCom. Removing water from the Conveniece Module is worth a look anyway. Good autolocksmith can resync the keys from around £50 or you can try DIY with VCDS/VagCom (See Ross Tech site).
Download free copy of VCDS from Ross Tech and suggest you get a cheap ebay vagcom cable to do most checks and tweaking.

http://www.prestigemotorservices.co.uk/ otherwise known as A8parts hold lots of A6 parts including interiors. Telephone is best for prices as they like a deal. They are also on the 'bay of evil'.

Regular oil change with genuine filter and good synthetic oil suggested. Thermostat, water pump and cambelt change at the same intervals. Do the fuel filter at the same time. Low voltage battery will give problems. Dash LCD Display may fade as it gets warm...live with it IMHO.
Watch the passenger footwell for water.....as above.

Enjoy!
