EBC REDSTUFF CERAMIC BRAKE PADS for the RS3

Would you be able to post a link as the interweb is a bit temperamental where I am just now, cheers! :)

A link to what amrb1? It's hot down here in Staffordshire - not like being all at sea off Aberdeen - and I'm old!

Haha! I'll let you off this time :icon_thumright: A link to the red stuff pads, just doing a RS conversion on my S3 and struggling to find decently priced pads! :)

I purchased the REDSTUFF pads for the RS3 from Camskill as they had a discount at that time, but the TT pads were purchased direct from EBC. For your fronts you need: EBC DP31210C, and the rears: EBC DP31518C. Don't forget to modify the front nearside brake sensor wear cable, or leave it connected and just tape it back; you choose.

Mega difference REDSTUFF made to the RS3; not so much to the TT, but they are not fully run-in yet.

Just ask if I can help further...

PS: if you want to try the BREMBO Sports pads then I've a new set on the shelf, a set of Audi/Brembo 47i6 pads too...

REDSTUFF feedback report:

Took a ride out for lunch yesterday using primarily the A5 from Cannock to 'The Lobster Pot', Church Bay, Anglesey: a 300-mile round trip for lunch! Well it was forecast to be a really nice day weather-wise and I do like lobster (RS3copilot prefers crab!).

So, with 200miles on the new Pilot Super Sports and 350miles on the REDSTUFF we take a brisk run...

The new tyres and brakes are superb, and I strongly do recommend both. As for the A5 between Llangollen (passing that Go Kart track at Cerrigydrudion) through and Betws-y-Coed to and Capel Curig well just everyone with an RS3 needs to run some rubber over that smoothly laid tarmac...

Anyways, for all you brake dust hating junkies, here's how BLUEY's fronts look after 320miles: note the finger mark in the dust...

AND ZERO brake squeal, a GREAT pedal, and MEGA braking...

Yes John !!! 100% Yes for me cured ALL braking issues..... Something Audi couldn't even do.

We called in to the Lobster Pot last year when out for a drive while staying in Morfa Nefyn.

Hi John

300 mile round trip in the RS3 is fun indeed, especially on those roads!

Thanks to you and 5cyl for the PMs - very interested in these redstuff pads. Just curious, did you apply any ceratec/equivalent and/or anti-squeal shims when installing them?

Cheers

Marcus

Yes to the CeraTEC Marcus, and yes to the stainless steel shims but only because I already had those for the 47i6 upgraded pads and as I've said before the application of such shims is a long proven fix for brake squeal, however, I'd have no hesitation in advising you to fit sans shims (these REDSTUFF pads front and rear are supplied with a shim similar to those BREMBO sports pads you already have) and just use the CeraTEC for lubrication.

The difference over all brake pads I've tried previously for everyday roadwork only, Marcus, is truly amazing...

Are those the 47i6 updated discs and calipers wolfbane?

The brake disc part number for the 47i6 upgrade is: 8P0.615.301.B

If not then you've not had the upgrade done.

You could be right John, no vibration dampers in sight, unless he has done as we have and unscrewed 'em.

So is the red stuff still the pad to have for the rs3 / ttrs then? Its just I read ur other post saying just now saying you don't rate them anymore after 5 laps on track or something...??

I hope not cos I ordered some tonight from camskill!

Cheers

I'm with Gazwould...

Ive never referenced REDSTUFF for anything other than roadwork, Denty, as track work is not what I do, so I don't know...

I'm running REDSTUFF (front and rear) on the road and I very much prefer 'em to the STD Audi/Brembo 47i6 items

I did start a thread "BRAKE PADS for TRACK work ONLY" some 3-weeks ago as I kept being told that REDSTUFF were unsuitable for track work but 3-weeks on and not a lot has been posted there: maybe (please) you'll let us know?

OK....a few p's worth from the S3 owner here....LOL

I fitted a set of these things pending a brake kit upgrade and was deeply disappointed.
There was slightly better initial bite, but otherwise the only noticeable difference over the stock pads was a lot of squealing.

I've also run DS2500's on a VWR brake kit,and those were reasonable for road use,but as Dave(brakes) Brown said, they will **** themselves all over the discs on track, and he was right.

I now use Mintex 1155 pads and AP rotors, and this is a vast improvement in every respect, over the DS2500s,but it may be a bit aggressive for some.

To be fair Alex you are describing your experience with a totally different car and brake set up than that of the RS3 ,the only similarities between the two cars are the S and the 3 parts of the badges.

I know and understand that.

I'm simply saying that there are alternatives, some of which may be better.

The RS brake setup is often used on the S3 as an upgrade, and is clearly better than the S3's stock setup, but the point about pads is a worthwhile consideration.

The other point is that for many of us,brakes and brake "feel" are very individual things, and what suits one, will almost certainly not suit someone else.

No problems here using redstuff but as you say each to their own.
I find them superb and no noise whatsoever.

Even though it's peeing down here in Cornwall the pads still perform superbly.

update: the sun has been out all day today. A good day driving to around in the RS.

Just a quick one. If anyone is after a set of these pads I have a brand new set unopened as I have since sold my RS3. They will be going for a bargain as I have no use for them now!

They are a hard pad and can take 1500 to bed, in that time they can squeal like a pig. They did on my Passat.

But after this time is a pad of great pleasure.

I've got them on a S14 with a big brake kit.

I never do just up front, all 4 corners on both cars.

On my own RS3 there was virtually ZERO bedding in with REDSTUFF, tremendous bite on first application, and absolutely ZERO brake squeal; and that's how they've stayed.

I can only report as I find, and this after 2.1/2 years of trying to resolve negativities with the STD Audi RS3 brake set-up - as most will know as it's all been documented here on the RS3 Forum.

BLUEY (and it's a ROAD car) is most definitely staying on REDSTUFF

I'd like to add if only to explain some, as with other cars I've fitted EBC brake pads to then I'd 100% agree with Gazwould...

To be fair to the Audi/Brembo brake pads, I thought the original RS3 arrangement was pretty good: ok, I/we too suffered brake squeal at 1250-miles or so but I quickly resolved that particular issue with an old time remedy on both my own car and for a number of others. When the 47i6 upgrade was announced, and others had brought their post upgraded cars to me I was not so keen on having the upgrade applied to my car and told the MD of AUDI UK, both verbally and later in writing, that my intention was not to have the upgrade. However, Martin Sander later persuaded me to have the new brake discs and calipers fitted, and so I did, but as with 'some' other RS3 owners the 47i6 arrangement for me was unconvincing with brake squeal, loads of dust, a long pedal, and lack of bite. And that's when I began to look at what other cars used the same Brembo caliper as the RS3 and looked at the problems and resolutions they had made i.e., REDSTUFF.

Now I've been an EBC user before on a number of Lotus and Audi cars and was sceptical of their performance (I do think EBC have Monday and Friday manufactured pads but those made on a Wednesday are best...) on 'my' RS3 but I just had to give 'em a go.

The initial brake application, fronts only at this time, I'm sure drew an expletive within the confines of the car... Several miles later and I was buzzing and had ordered a set of rears.

Rears fitted and wow! And that's when I told others and it's where I am now: for roadwork these REDSTUFF brakes for me are streets ahead of the STD Audi units, and my local Audi dealer thinks so too...

Taken at Portmerion following a hasty journey through Snowdonia, and a chase of narrow gauge steam locomotives, show just how little brake dust these brake pads produce (and NO I haven't washed the wheels/car):

DSCF0208_zpscb824d03.jpg

Finally, I have tried the same REDSTUFF pads on our 2.0 TT and after 500-miles have reverted back to the original Brembo/Audi items, much better for the TT in 'our' view - and that's where I AGREE with Gazwould.

Ok so after fitting these red stuff front pads to my ttrs I can definitely 100% say they work amazingly well!!!

My front disks only had 5k miles on them and little by little I started to experience judder through the steering wheel when braking soft or hard... In the end the juddering was so bad I almost took it to Audi so they could check them out... I hate giving my car to anyone, esp Audi as mostly they know f all and just end up replacing loads of things until the problem disappears and dont / wont discuss the root cause... And we all know about the way they abuse cars when taking them for test drives after completing works also but that's another story...

Anyway, I initially thought, oh no I've warped my disks but then I remembered I felt the same judder on my old 08 s3 after a particularly hard track day at Bedford. I read up a bit and came to the conclusion it was pad build up on the disks. Sure enough 1k miles later brakes were fine again on the s3 with no judder...

So after discovering the excellent advice from the OP on this thread I went ahead and fitted the red stuff pads.

Initially I was disapointed as the judder remained on the ttrs, but now after just over 150 miles all is well! These red stuff pads have fixed my brakes!!! Woo hoo!

So to summerise: All judder gone and no squealing at all now from any speed! (Unlike original pads which squealed constantly)
The disks also look better with no scortch marks like before.
The red stuff pads were only 100 pound deliverd unlike Audi's rs tax inflated cheesecake pads.

You should have seen the state of the OEM pads after only 5k miles.. Pad material disintegrating and crumbling on the edges, backing plates actually had melt holes in them the shape of the caliper pistons...! Shoddy Audi, very shoddy!

Well happy, thanks again to bluey and his master, you've really helped me and Trixie the TT out and avoided any nasty 'dealer visits'

Thanks again dude:)

When you say you cut and join the cable are you removing the cable out of the original pad? I also wanted to see if my brakes are the upgraded ones, code 8PO.615.301 4.36.2

Cheers

Yes, use the original plug and cable, just cut and join and insulate/seal the cables as per the photographs.

If you've the 'upgraded' brake discs then the part number shown on the brake disc will end with a letter 'B' i.e., 8P0 615 301 B. The part number you list is the original pre 47i6 upgraded arrangement

Awe right, when I bought the car Audi had told me that all recalls had been done on it. I'm due a service soon so I will be pushing for this then slap the new EBCs on

Or you could unplug the cable and dis-able brake pad monitoring with vag-com

Could you point me in the right direction on how to do this? I have VCDS but still learning how to use it to it's full potentional.

Just over 300 miles now on the red stuff and I'm really loving the feel of these pads, seem to be getting better and better.
Basically these pads feel the same as the OEM pads but with more initial bite, more progressive when pushing also ( less spongy)

These pads are obviously harder than the OEM pads as they efficetivley skimmed my discs which cured my severe brake judder and other issues!! Which is great, but i just hope they don't kill my disks much quicker than usual, being made our of ceramic and kevlar etc.. I expect the dics will wear slightly quicker anyway but worth it for good brakes even if u do get a a few less miles out of the discs....

You'll need to complain to your Audi Dealer of: brake squeal, brake vibration, and/or brake fade in the wet: go see previous Threads in this RS3 Forum. :kissmyrings:

Do the rears too, Denty... It's worth doing if only for the reduction in dust - and you'll most likely find that the friction material is similarly (as the original fronts) breaking up...
