Hey everyone,

Owned my s3 for a little over a week now and really enjoying it.

Have been browsing the forum for info which has been very informative so far - thanks!

Have said Hi in the welcome forum but thought I'd say Hi in here too as this area is a bit more specific and post a couple of pics to show you guys.

The car is pretty standard as far as I believe. Only mods that I know of is that it has been lowered on Eibach springs and has been re-mapped, but all I have for the re-map is an invoice, no further info as to what has actually been done.

I'm pretty happy with the way the car is atm and don't really have any plans for it as such but we shall see!

While saying hello, I have a couple of initial things I'd like to sort on the car to tidy it up.

Headlight restoration & Lamin-x.

Unfortunately, one of the headlights needs restoring, which I've read all the threads on how to do it and what to use, which is great and will be giving this a go soon! However, my main concern is once done I realise I need to use lamin-x or something similar due to rubbing off the original UV layer. However, the uk website for this I can't seem to find a way, once on the website of actually buying the stuff at Lamin-X.co.uk • Race Car Headlight Protection Films | Clear, Tinted, Smoked, Yellow, Blue, Red !? Also I understand that the american site does pre pre-cut lamin-x specific to the headlight, however, our Audi's don't seem to be catered for... Audi A3 Headlight Covers, Tail Light Covers, Fog Light Covers and Clear Bras from Lamin-x Protective Films Therefore, my question is, how and where are people getting there lamin-x or alternative product from?

Also where is the best place on the internet to get everything from so that I can carry out the headlight restoration? I see maguires and 3M do kits, however, is this needed, or would it be best to source the parts of the kit individually? I have a corded power drill for the buffering and don't particularly wish to spend out on any other electrical tools as such!

Brackets from seats missing.

Also inside the car on both the front seats there seems to be a specific piece of trim missing, please see photo below. I've looked through the parts numbers threads, however, as of yet haven't managed to find this piece? Does anyone happen to know the part number / what I can type into google or ebay to source these 'things'?

Rubbed off trim/buttons.

This is no massive problem, just somethings that is bugging me. Anyone got any ideas of what can be done to rectify the problems with these issues, or whether anything an actually be done rather than actually replacing the whole of the air con unit. I guess the headlight control unit could be replaced fairly cost effectively?

Electric folding mirrors?

Does anyone know whether you can replace the control unit for the electric mirrors to the one where you can twist the knob round to electrically fold the mirrors in? If so would it be a matter if simply getting hold of the control unit with this function and simply replacing it in the door handle here, or would further modifications be required to the mirrors themselves? This would simply be a quick, potentially easy mod to do I was thinking which would be useful for me as I regularly park on busy streets. However, if this is mega bucks / impossible, It's not that much of a big deal of course.

Thank you very much in advance if anyone can help me out with any answers or point me in the right directions this would be very much appreciated!

Thanks again,

Jase

Hello mate, lovely looking S3 you've got there!

I probably won't be a great deal of hope, but with regards to the AC, you can get stickers that go on the buttons, which apparently look absolutely normal once on - I guess it's never really that bright in your car anyway.

Regarding the headlight switch, I've had to replace mine twice (facepalm) and they can be easily procured from a breaker for about £25. The two that I've had were in great condition, one being almost flawless. Just be careful when you're fitting it because the switch part, and the fascia can separate. If you want to separate them, or they happen to separate, to release the tabs that hold the switch in you need to push in slightly on the knob, and then turn it anti-clockwise a little bit. You should then feel it unlock and it'll come out easily. If you don't do that, you risk breaking it, hence why I've bought two.

I'd be very surprised if you could replace that mirror switch assembly as I would imagine that it doesn't have the motor to fold the windows in, though I'd be very happy to hear if it was otherwise for my A3!

Anyway, looks absolutely lovely. Enjoy!

No, the mirrors won't fold, not without major reworking, the addition of motors, the addition of custom made switch gear and multiple monies.

Good luck ever finding a double din, with heated seats climate panel that's not worn off. More chance of riding an albino unicorn through the Amazon jungle.

The pieces of trim for the seats are unfortunately quite a common thing to break, my suggestion is find a crashed one on eBay being broken for spares. The airbags in the seats may have gone off, rendering them useless and the side mouldings redundant.

Headlight switch will be much easier to find.

Ref the headlights, go buy some 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit and 2500 grit wet and dry. Rub rub rub until your fingers fall off, then use some Farcella G3 and a sponge polishing pad and continue rubbing. It will take a morning to do it, but it will cost less than a tender and do the same job.

Failing that, pop to a body shop and pay them £20 to do it with a rotary buffer and some cutting compound.

Enjoy the ride.

I recently re-furbed my headlights with the Meguiars kit and applied Lamin-X tint which I purchased from here: Funk Motorsport | Lamin-X and accessory suppliers

Personally I think the tint gives a nice subtly darker shade, especially against silver paintwork. Will try to sort some pics out at the weekend.

I think I bought 2 sheets of 12"x18" film which was the minimum size I could get away with for the facelift headlamp/indicator units.

Overall I was really pleased with the end result.

I had mine done by a body shop £120 and look like new.

Nope mate not been well for a long time how you doing.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers and feedback, all very helpful cheers!

Had a look for the stickers for the climate control issue, may well give this a go and see how things look as a cheaper initial fix, if not perhaps I may try replacing the buttons? Or perhaps finally a second hand climate control unit without any markings... if its possible to find one without the markings rubbed off that is!

I didn't think the mirrors would fold at a simple replacement of a unit, or I'd guess everyone would be doing this, not to worry on this one thanks for clarifying though! (Silly question perhaps, but can you just manually fold the mirrors shut, like most wing mirrors? I have tried pushing them shut but there was a lot of resistance and I don't want to go breaking anything if this can't be done!?)

Will try and source the side mouldings for the seats as it's really annoying me not having them there!

Will also try and get a new headlight switch and try using the technique mentioned above (thanks!) to replace this!

The Doctor, thank you for the point in the right direction regarding lamin-x this is great! I'd also be really interested to see some pics with your headlights done in the tint, as I think my s3 must be the same colour as yours and am torn whether to go for clear or perhaps go for the tint??

Thanks again :)

I was also undecided and so took a punt on tint based on some pics online. Really pleased with the effect of the tint against the silver paintwork. Here are some quick pics for you;

The Doctor - thank you very much for the pics with the tints - looks good! I'm still unsure and have gone for the clear lamin-x for the time being. My theory being, if I restore the headlights and cover them in the clear lamin-x to begin with. If I decide to go for tint later down the line, I could just apply the tint film over the clear film for 'added' protection, if the clear film is in good condition of course! Also, which splitter is that you have? I think it really finishes off the front end and hides the cut out bit under the passenger side which I think makes the front end look a little odd! Not by any chance this is it:
eBay - Item # 221120445704

Anyway, the clear lamin-x from Funk Motorsport should be with me this week so am hoping to get my headlights sorted this weekend!

I also had these arrive this weekend, which I got for a good price off ebay and am hoping I will be able to find a way to get these changed over this weekend too! Anyone got any tips or even better a how to guide for this? I've had a good search but as of yet I've not come up with anything really good - it may be I'm just not searching for the right thing!

Thanks again as always!

That's a Seat Leon Cupra R ("LCR") splitter. You need to trim it to fit and the literally use self-tapping screws to attach it to the bumper. There are 2 central stands that need trimming down and also the very ends that curve round to the leading edge of the wheel arches. Take your time, trim a bit at a time, line it up right and it's straightforward.

No idea how to fit the climate control buttons, but interested to see a "how to" guide when you've done it.
