Hi guys,

Is the Audi VCDS disc based or internet based?

I know a OBD lead etc is needed but how do i go about geting the software?

I dont want to spend loads of cash just i see alot of people on the forum with the software and i am curious on where and how to get it?

Thank you

Buy cable, register it with Ross-Tech, download the software and away you go.

Only need to be connected to the internet to download the updates.

Does it cost to register with Ross-Tech?

And that easy haha.

Cheers Mate

As said, the only expense you have is for the cable as registering it and the software is free.

Would definitely recommend getting it, used mine hundreds of times.

but not a ebay cable

Yeah its pretty much all about the cable. Then you download the software as stated. Id register the cable with ross-tech straight away, as this entitles you to email support. Obviously the best computer to use the cable with is a laptop.

More than that. They advise you do not use a mains powered computer as it can create a ground loop and damage the car and computer. The computer must be on batteries.

Where does it state that? Never heard of that and Ross Tech even stock a USB 2.0 Extension cable enabling you to connect it to your desktop.

You can use an extension, think what chinnyhill means is you not supposed to use any other power source such as an inverter thats powered from the car, that woukd cause a ground loop.

VCDS is one of the best things I have bought for my Audis. Great little tool and well worth the money IMO. Helping out others with scans and retrofit recoding is also one of the main positive aspects about it too.

Got mine from Nigel (NHN) and his service was brilliant.

Got mine from Nigel NHN too, he's a legend. Best investment by a long way and worth every penny and some.

Apologies. I just found the little bit of paper they put in with the package as an afterthought. It doesn't say what I said at all. Instead it says not to power the laptop from an in car charger or an inverter connected to the car.

Sorry for the misinformation.

I understand that people generally don't like to put up a specific price but could someone give me an idea on the cost for the VCDS software + cable?

I'd like to be able to read/clear faults and on the very rare occasion recode.

Thank you.

These look like the Chinese clone cables that only work with cracked, old versions of VCDS.

There is always the possibly of asking a VCDS map user to help when you need the cable.

I got mine from NHN on here, well worth the money IMO...but...

if you don't feel you'll get the use from it, then I would recommend the beer token route... :D

To put it another way, if you have to make two trips to an Audi dealer for fault diagnosis, you will have wasted the price of having your own diagnostic capability.
It was a no brainer for me. NHN got the call, it arrived yesterday, all installed sweet as a nut.
I now know exactly what I need for my car and I am not beholden to a dealer who wants to bleed my wallet.
Best money you will ever spend.
