Hi all,

I remember someone having a problem with their shower earlier in the year and being able to sort it with the help of some friendly and knowledgeable audi-sport members. Well, I have a problem with my boiler and wondered whether anyone might be able to offer some advice.

It's a Vaillant combi-boiler (can't remember exact model), only about 4-5 years old. A while ago we had a minor gas leak under the hob in the kitchen, and transco came out and turned off the gas and put a "blocker" on. We called out a plumber who fixed the gas leak and reconnected the gas.

He then commented that the boiler had not been switched off which was wrong as there was obviously no gas being supplied to it so it could cause some damage when it tried to fire up. It seemed to be working fine though so that was that and he left.

However, ever since then the hot water has been playing up. The central heating works fine, but every now and then we can't get any hot water. It usually sorts itself eventually (after turning the hot tap on and off a few times) so we've not worried about.

For the last 2 days though we have not been able to get any hot water at all, and the stranger thing is that the heating is on permanently, even though its set to timer mode, and the timer is switched off completely! Last night I actually turned the boiler off completely so as not to waste energy on the heating. Turned it back on this morning and it seems to be ok again. Anyone know what could be causing this?

They say these things come in 3's - had my car written off, now the boiler's playing up .... wonder what the 3rd thing will be!

Thanks in advance for your help guys!

Mike

is this the same as your boiler? vaillant turbomax 242 E

hopefully it is, if not it may be similar. for starters try this, switch off boiler first.

the front top white cover should simply lift off. then you will see a screw on the panel which needs to be removed......

the panel will then fold down and ur left with this.....

if you look on the right hand side, you will see a small microswitch , this is made when there is a demand for water (its turquiosey blue in the pic)

turn on a hot water tap and you should see a white lever push down and "make" this switch. in my case this was not happening.

try this and let me know what happens

Hello mate. Thanks for taking the time to post those pics and info, I really appreciate it, cheers. It sounds like exactly the same problem. The hot water is working fine again now but I know it'll happen again before long so would like to try and get it sorted.

It's not quite the same boiler unfortunately, mine is a TURBOmax PLUS 828. I've opened it up and had a look and I can't see anything that looks like the little turquoise switch that you mention. See the pics below (taken on phone, sorry about quality)..

Did you manage to get yours fixed? Did you DIY or get a plumber?

Thanks again.

Mike

glad its come back to life for now

yeah i got mine sorted, the white lever that pushes down on the switch had come out from its mount. just popped it in again and it worked for a while , but then after a while it happened again. i have added a thin strip of velcro to the switch arm (you can see it on my pic if you look closely, crude i know, but its perfect and stops the white lever from popping out. has worked fine since and that was at least 2 years ago.

your diverter valve is completely different and looks like it would be easier to just change it completely.

i have managed to fix this and other problems with my boiler just using the service manual, its pretty good like and has great diagrams / flow charts for solving problems. shows each part, explains what it does, and gives details on how to remove/replace. did a quick google to try and find a service manual for your model but no luck. mine was with the boiler when i bought my house.

i have drained the boiler before and if you get to the stage of replacing the diverter valve you will have to do the same. again by following service manual, and using a bit of common sense :p ...of course if you don't feel up to it there's no shame in calling in the pro's.

does the fault only happen when your central heating is off by any chance?

have a look on other forums like this one for more ideas.

link for part here

Thanks mate. The link to the other forum is very interesting - sounds like they had exactly the same problem I've got, would appear it's quite common!

Will try getting the diverter valve replaced I think!!

Cheers for your help!

Mike

Only just spotted this. It more than likely is the divertor valve. Its a common problem with that model. The heating stays on when its not working cos the water has a pre heat function so it fires until the domestic heat exchanger is up to temperature. So if ist not moving over to hot water it will carry on firing in heating mode cos domestic heat exchanger isnt getting any heat.

They are pretty simple to exchange. Get the full unit and not just the motor cos its normaly the brass internals that seize up and cause it to fail.

Thanks mate. Yeah I think I'll get the diverter valve replaced!! Sounds like that definitely is the problem.

Cheers

Mike

sorry i havent seen or responded to this till now... but you guys seem to be doing just fine with out any of us " experts"... ha ha ha...
check the micro switch your talking about is making good contact on switching..... also, check that when the diverters diaphram moves ( when hot water is turn on)the pin is moving out with it, hitting the micro switch and making the contact... this pin often siezes or sufficient movement is not acheived due to failiure of the diaphram in the diverter.... lets us know how you get on... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif
