I had a long journey the other day so filled up the tank, now i waited till it clicked then topped it up a little. Got in the car and it wouldn't start! Just made a clicking sound! In the end i managed to get a friend to come out and the car jumped started fine! Im puzzled, the battery and starter motor showed no signs of wear! Since its been fine, started the last few mornings perfect! Could this be related to my fill up!? Didn't realise this could cause any damage!

Click click click click deffo sounds like weak battery. Trust me on that! Especially as you're saying it got jump started and worked.

Have the battery load-tested (any good garage or battery shop). Also, take a good look at both battery connections for looseness and/or signs of corrosion. Better also to check the battery grounding point, also for corrosion. Good luck.

I slightly overfilled once to the point it spat back out of the filler and I could actually see the overflowing fuel in the top, had to use tissue to soak up what I could see before putting the filler cap back on

had no effect on the starting of the car, so its definitely nothing to do with overfill

Had the same problem with my wife's A3, would be fine to start but every now and then it would do the same as you describe and just click.

Replaced the battery and all was fine, with a new battery you could see how run down the old battery was

Failed to start this morning so I'm guessing it's the battery. Just took it out and gave it a good charge. Looks like the original, so not bad for 7 years! So it seems it was purely coincidental it happened after i filled the car up! I never fill the car up to the brim and certainly never done it past the click on the fuel pump! Can a body recommend a decent battery?

Euro car parts did me a Bosch S5 like 800CA for about £80

Defo sounds like battery ,mine done it with the clicking noise when I tried to turn it over ,Rac came out tested it ,new battery £125 ...

My A3 required a new battery recently so I just got a cheapo £50ish 'Lion' battery from ECP. Has been fine since and comes with a 3 years guarantee so not bad for the money.

Yeah, i ended up doing the same! However the guy tried to rip me off! Wasn't best pleased!

Sounds like a battery. Mine did the same... click click and signed off. It had been in the car since new so probably due.
