Sorted Heat-Soak!

I've been get increasingly angry about how much heatsoak I was experiencing.

When it was at Forge having its intercooler put on and dyno'd etc, I showed about a 7bhp loss, between repeat runs.

This was also really noticeable when driving on the road, the car lacked urgency after prolonged lively driving.

So bearing in mind whilst on the dyno the turbo was glowing bright orange......thought i'd better get around to it.


So luckily, I still had the heat shield sat around from when I bought my P-flo, I only left it off as i was to impatient...


So I fitted it on this morning, a little fiddly, being careful not to drop nuts/bolts/washers anywhere, it was done.


You know that feeling where you switch on the car in the morning and go for a blast and it feels very lively?

This is now with me ALL OF THE TIME.

I've thrashed it everywhere today, Its feels like a different animal now.

This is saying something, particularly as today is about a really hot day 23 degrees.



Heat is a massive issue, and i don't think its one addressed enough if I'm honest.


So for those of you in the same boat as me, and quickly rush to put your CAI on, really do put the heat shield on.

Need some advice, Car is running Revo Stage 2+, car was sat in the sun all day yesterday which was 20+ degrees and on my normal drive home which is around 20 mins. I noticed my car felt sluggish and no eager to go.

Do you think this could be heat soak? I did drive it again this morning and it felt ok, trying to work out if it is heat soak or i'm too use to the power.

It will be a combination of factors....

Hot intercooler,hot engine bay,and high intake temps as a result of the first two.

Don't forget that as you increase boost,if intercooler efficiency is not up to the task,manifold air temps will also rise,and power loss will result.
A bigger,more efficient intercooler will certainly reduce power loss on hot days,or hard drives,and I found my ProAlloy to be a huge help on that score.

Likewise to what Alex said. I just fitted an Airtec stage 2 intercooler and felt a huge difference in how my car performs, especially on these hot clammy days. Power is more consistent after lively runs and hot temperatures. Took my car out a long drive yesterday and felt no power loss what so ever now the intercooler is on.

The std airbox does a relatively good job of keeping IATs down - you definitely need the heat shield in these temps. Did you measure your IATs before and after as this would've proved your theory?

I replaced my stock plastic-end cap IC for the earlier (pre-facelift) all alloy OEM IC and got similar results in low end response and boosting characteristics. I was on a dyno last week at 28deg outside temp and my IATs were at 30 deg before the runs and only went upto 40 deg after around 6 full power runs. I think that's pretty good for a OEM cooler!

btw, now running 530Nm @ 3400 rpm (possibly more due to the high temps on that particular day!)

Those figures,would,by some people's reckoning,amount to a significant drop in peak bhp,over air at ambient temps.

However,the rise in IATs with your intercooler were actually quite small,and thus a good result.

I found going from the metal OEM I/c to an a larger aftermarket I/c did make another reasonable step,and I am thoroughly convinced that a WMI system on a big turbo car is a must.
 
The forge intercooler gave my car 22bhp more on the same dyno the day after it was tested without it.

Well worth buying one.
