After arriving in Spain a few days ago, parked my car in the under ground carpark of our apartment. Returning to it a couple of days later it appear some oik has attempted to get in it by slashing the roof...... Hasn't got in but of course the roof now needs replacing....

Not sure whether the apartment complex insurance (three other cars vandalised the same night) will cover it or if a claim on my insurance is needed, I found a complete second hand hood on ebay for ~£450 and could probably fit it myself if needed. (excess is £350 if I need to claim on my insurance) so am weighing up options, not sure I'd be happy with a second hand roof. Anybody else changed one, had it done etc? Recommendations?

Audi is around £3.5k for a new cover from what I've read.

that's ****
iv changed 2 in the past make sure you put a day or 2 aside to complete the job theres plugs bolts sensors everywhere

and no guide that I ever found.
also have a spare pair of hands on call.

Don't we have a cabrio roof specialist on the forum? I think his name might be Vagpro.

pity your so far down south

my pal chris could fit it for you (Sheffield)

I was hoping for someone nearer, google shows a place in East Sussex that will replace the outer skin and back window for £850. There I'd also a place in North London at £1400ish. Quite a difference so I'd like a recco really.

Sorry to hear about your roof mate.
If you are referring to Monsoon in East Sussex, I have used them before for a minor tear to my accoustic hood and they were very good and not expensive. I wouldnt know about the quality of a full hood replacement but I had a chat with them about a few things and from what I can remember I think for the £850 you quote they fit a roof made by an American company. Quite a big workshop and they obviously replace a lot of soft tops on all types of marques.

Thanks for the opinion, I think that was the company, when you say "minor tear", how long and how much?

You're welcome mate. My tear was on the inner headlining not the outer roof and was on the seam just to the side of the rear window where it would meet the "parcel shelf". Sorry if my previous post was misleading. It was able to have a repair which involved stitching the two edges back together plus adding some material behind to strengthen the seam. They only charged me about a score and it was about a half hours work.

I may be corrected but I don't think its possible to repair "a rip" in the outer hood, ( it may be possible to repair if on a seam, I wouldn't know ) but I was fortunate that my inner hood tore on a seam.

I was just trying to let you know that they seemed a professional outfit from what I saw. In fact I originally took it to Audi who recommended me to go there.

Hope this is of use.

That's really useful, they sound like a good option. I had assumed you tear was exterior but agree with your assumption an outside one cannot be repaired.

VagPro could almost certainly assist you if not replace the roof for you.

He's know for fixing the common motor fault, however he's got spare switches, motors and various other cab parts, having said that he didn't have a whole roof at the time I went to see him.

He has a website: Audi Convertible Roof Specialist - Vagpro

Very helpful guy so might be worth giving him a call even if you don't get him to do any of the work
