S3 Oil Use (and a little moan...)

Up to 6,500 miles today and off on a long drive this weekend, so whilst filling up I decided to check the oil.

It was at the lowest possible point on the crosshatched area on the dipstick - almost below it TBH.

Firstly, I am surprised the car had not alerted me to this - as my A4 used to do.

Secondly, a massive pat on the back to the idiot who put the oil filler cap at the back left hand corner of the engine, well below the top of the engine cover.

I challenge anyone not to spill any whilst filling the ****** up!

Anyway, stuck in 500ml and its half way up the crosshatched area again, so i am happy that in 6,500 miles its used half a litre.
 
To go your local pound shop, buy a funnel and all your spilling worries are over.

But yes I'm sure they are trying to make cars less serviceable by Joe blogs.

I was very surprised where the oil cap is. It is a bit difficult to get your hand on and I have thought it will be a nightmare come fill up time. I have removed the plastic engine cover and it does seem to make it much more accessible.

I am going to check mine today. I've not even looked under the bonnet yet tbh.

As we don't have pound shops here in Cheshire (joke!) I will fashion a funnel out of an empty water bottle from the recycling bin.
 
Ought to check it weekly not weakly.....................
 
Well decided to check mine yesterday after nearly 5,000 miles and it's still 3/4 up the stick, so no need for any there.
 
1300 miles since March. don't think I'll be checking mine this year, what do you reckon? Lol

Grandmothers and suck eggs etc, BUT you said you checked your oil when you filled up, so presumably the engine had only just stopped running., There may have been quite a bit of oil which still needed to drain back into the sump before you should check the level on the dipstick. Engine oil should only be checked when the engine is cold or at least has been standing for about 10 minutes. So you may not have used as much as you thought ....

I can't remember exactly what it says but if you read the manual it tells you to run the engine then check. It surprised me.

In my last s3 8v I got the check oil light come on after 5k. I checked it and was at least 25% above min.

If you look in the bag which has your top up oil in there is a folded funnel with gloves and paper towels. What more can you need? ;)
As mentioned above removing plastic engine cover makes life easier (just pull it off)

I thought when the car warns you about the oil level, its not advice its a warning. So you have to go get oil in the engine as its dangerously low and needs filled up asap before the engine is out. I really dont like the idea of running the S3 on low oil for a long time.
 
There is a warning on the dash don't panic. Comes on before oil reaches min on the dipstick

I haven't got to that part of the manual yet! But thanks for the tip as I've never heard of that technique.
 
My handbooks says to check with a warm engine, switch off, then leave it for 2 mins before checking it.

I would hazard an educated guess that the 2 mins is a minimum period :)
