Hi,

Problem just noticed in this car that i brought this week, well i think it is, cause i've never owned an Automatic or an Audi before this.

What happens is, with gearbox in sport mode, if you are cruising at about 20-30mph and you then stamp the throttle down straight to maximum, it does its usual down change as normal but then the rev's fly up to 6000rpm without fully accelarating, until i let the throttle off a bit and the rev's ease back down and the "slipping" stops, its like your wheel spinnnig a manual car until it grips but obviously not wheel spinning here so i imagine its a clutch issue or the gearbox its self, is this normal or not?

if not, then whats most likely the cause:

Clutch problem of some discription
This DMF flywheel i keep reading about
gearbox oil
gearbox other problem

Or just the way these cars work and dont generally like stomping on the throttle in sport mode.

It doesn't do it if im slightly less aggressive with the throttle.

And also doesn't do it in 'Drive' but that doesn't have the same acceleration in that mode, not tried it in Tiptronic yet as forgot to try that but i'm guessing that doesn't accelerate as fast as Sport mode(No idea - am a tiptronic rookie/virgin ;)).

plus will any of this show a fault code.

should be getting it on diagnostic machine at my "small" local garage and might get him to do a gearbox filter and oil change as thats the cheap option... But be good to get long time users of this car on here oppinion, any help appreaciated.

Car is:
2002 Audi A4 Quattro Sport 3.0l V6 Saloon
Tiptronic Auto Gearbox

Also have a vibration started when you go past 60mph that you can feel everywhere, didn't do none of this on test drive but maybe i wasn't very aggressive on test run as was just concentrating on using an Auto gearbox for first time.

any ideas? linked to this slipping problem above (whatever that is..) ?

tiptronics dont have dmf

ideally you need to get the oil and filter changed in the gearbox asap
dont skimp on the job and get the correct fluid to replace it

sounds very much like the clutches are slipping in the gearbox , if they are the only solution is to have the clutch pack changed
and have the gearbox rebuilt ...this wont be cheap im afraid

You have to have the 'normal' clutch replaced & gearbox rebuilt at same time? or could be one or the other?

I see a clutch is about £400, and gearbox filter/gasket/oil is about £80, i could handle that but much more and im in trouble...

is that vibration to do this this problem? as am noticing a very small amount through steering wheel cockpit area when at idle in neutral when 'cold' also, goes away after its been run (sitting in neutral).

60-70mph+ vibration stays even when warm.

Hi,
Problem just noticed in this car that i brought this week,

Was it a trade sale or private sale? Sounds like the owner/seller may have known about this fault. If it was a from a dealer/garage, take the car back and ask them to resolve it. Otherwise, it might be a expensive fix for you.

A gearbox recon is circa £1500, that may or may not include the clutch pack though. My dad's S8 had a full rebuild at 44k miles/8 years old due to rough changing and some slippage.

Private :3sadwalk:

ring your local audi dealer and ask them for a price for the parts

you need automatic transmission fluid and the correct transmission filter
when they give you the price ask them politely for the part number

that way you can check online and ensure whatever you are buying is the correct part number

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING OTHER THAN GENUINE ATF FLUID AND FILTER

have a look on the vcds map and see if there is anyone local to you who can help with diagnostic codes
they may possibly be some in the gearbox module if there is right down the codes and google them
clear the codes and see what happens

Taking it to an Audi Dealer not an option right now for me, im semi-disabled with my back & other stuff at this right moment and can't sit in chairs other than my home ones for more than 30 mins and audi dealers is an 1 hour 20 mins round trip for me, will have to get a couple of friends and family members and another car to sort it getting to audi at some point, will just have to use as is right now and be steady with it, i only do 10 miles a week probably at the moment so wont be doing to many miles on it an only plays up when stamping throttle pedal flatt instantly in sport mode, doesn't play up if you go 80% throttle for a second or two then 100% thottle, and doesn't play up at all in 'drive'.

My Dad took it round to local mechanic to put it in on his diagnostic machine and there was NO Fault codes apparently, but he took it for a run and did what needed to do to get it to slip and said its not actually slipping, he says its more that its Jumping out of gear or not going into gear when it does the kick back down change.

He couldn't change the gearbox oil/check oil level as he said he didn't have the required tools or something like that, but knows someone local-ish who can.

With that new information (jumping out of gear etc) is it more or less likely that a gearbox oil change will help it or is it looking worse than that now?

Changing the oil and filter can sometimes smooth out the operation of the gearbox. If the gearbox/sensor or clutch has failed then only cure is to fix it. You won't really know until if you either;

A) replace oil and filter and see how the box behaves (cheaper option)

or

B) have the box thoroughly checked by a specialist who may want to remove it and check things/replace parts. (more expensive)
