Hi all,

I'm looking to buy myself a 07-09 plate 2.0 TDI Sport. I currently own a Corolla Compressor and pretty clued up on my Jap/Petrol cars, however the cars costing me a bomb to run doing avg 30mpg on a 60mile commute to work every day.

Reason I've chosen a TDI Sport is because obviously it's a diesel so has good MPG but also has a bit more power so seems to be a good choice for my commuting without having too much of a power loss compared to my Corolla.

Now I'm not really clued up on Audi's or diesels and their common faults so wanted to source some advice before I start my search. All advice is welcome on what I can look out for or even if you feel there's a better choice of car.

Cheers in advance,
Josh.

04 - 08 PD Engine (Noisy Rocket Engines)
08 - 12 CR Engine (Quiet Boring Engine)

Early A3 2.0 tdi PD engine had cracked head issue leading to constant coolant filling however after 07 I believe were fixed. Check part numbers to be sure though.

Injector issues on 2.0 tdi (PD) however replaced for free under recall.

Also something some 2.0 tdi pd are prone to oil pump issues. Not too sure about the engine code affected.

May have other issues, but these are the only I can think of.

Basically common rail is the way to go.

Hmm right okay, sounds like this could be a slightly risky move to take a loss of 40+ bhp and have more mechanical issues. :uhm:

Was doing a little more research last night and found that Audi do a TDI 170 model, both S-Line and Quattro. Do 170's suffer similar issues I'm assuming?

Also are there any added issues that come with the Quattro models, diff issues etc?

I bought my 2.0 Tdi 140 (57 plate) a month ago and the turbo blew after two weeks. Luckily it was all covered by warranty and sorted now but I saw the invoice and it was £1080! All I can say is if you're going to buy one make sure it comes with a decent warranty and is from a reputable dealer.

Fascinates me how much they're marketed at yet have fairly expensive common faults to fix if they go wrong.

If I do get one I'll definitely keep an eye on what the T&Cs of the warranty are! Cheers for the info though guys.

Would you recommend maybe looking at a different model? Older maybe, or an A4?

Okay, might have to do some digging then on how much BHP I could get it up too though. Having the pleasure of 215 at the moment is nice, 105 could possibly make me cry my way to work.

Mind you, supposedly the 170 is the better one to get, I've not known many 170 turbo'd blow, if you get the 2006 onwards engines with a C revision they are supposedly fine.

The only thing I know of wrong with the 170 is as mentioned injector problems, however, that's covered under audi's recall.

Although, if you were to get a 170 I'd reccomend trying to find a Quattro, my remapped 140 used to spin all the time and having the Quattro on the s3 is lovely!

Yeah I definitely fancy a Quattro one. Just need to go and have a drive of one and then see what kind of price I'll be looking at.

The new common rail engines are nice although not viscous like the PD. Only found in the newest facelift though.

More reliable too and bare in mind has cheaper road tax, but also comes equipped with DPF unfortunately. So local driving may give issues.
