hi all
having owned a quattro b7 TFSI for the last 7 months, the cars been sweet, untill sunday
i noticed a squeak like noise from under the engine. it sounds like a dodgy fan bearing?the noise stops when i accelerate but when i ease off the accelerator its back.
my mechanics had his stethiscope on and found the noise louder on the flow and return pipes from the multitronic gearbox. the cars got 98k and FSH, although nothing in the history about gearbox oil being changed
having read a few horror stories about the multitronic system, i was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same?
thanks for reading

Well, if it hasn't had its gearbox oil changed, the service history isn't full. I'm presuming what you have is a service book full of stamps, but no further detail on what was actually done. I'd be tempted at this stage to contact the dealers who stamped the book and ask if they're willing to disclose specifically what work they did and when.

In the meantime, be on the safe side and spend £200 (maybe less) on getting the oil changed now. After all, it might make the noise go away.

im booked in for the oil and filter change on saturday, so fingers crossed

It's my understanding that the auto box in a B7 Quattro isn't multitronic, it's a standard 6 speed box.

I meant to add that if it is the non multitronic box it's defined by Audi UK as sealed, but the general advice tends to be that having the gearbox oil changed is no bad thing (Audi USA do have oil changes in the non multi box on the Quattro)

I have read this somewhere. Thanks for your reply

Oh, god, yes I missed that. If your car is a Quattro, then it doesn't have a Multitronic box, it has a regular ZF auto box with torque convertor. Changing the oil is not a service requirement, but it is worth doing around 75,000 or so miles. I just had mine changed, costing about £530.

My mechanic now thinks it's the torque converter. Jdp, you were right it's a zf gearbox! Looks like it's of to a gearbox specialist on monday

When I queried my gearbox oil may need a change, was told we don't do that sir, it's a sealed unit! Is mine different again because it's tiptronic?

No, mines the same and Audi UK will say its a sealed unit.
However you can have the oil changed and as said above Audi USA do have changes in the service schedule. it's something that many of us forumites would recommend from previous experiences.

Had the ATF changed in my ZF box about three months ago. Audi might say it's sealed for life, but that's not the advice from ZF.

Who are you going to believe, the car manufacturer or the automatic gearbox manufacturer?
