Can anyone confirm the cambelt change interval on a 2004 1.9 TDI A4 its the avf engine.
It was changed October 2010 so when I bought it I thought I'd be getting it done in the next few months, as I thought it'd be 4 years/60k like my PD130 mk4 golf.
However I asked them question at a local bag specialist the other day and they said they'd usually change them at 5 years/60k.

Which is correct?
Don't want to leave it over, but also, thinking I 'might' change the car in the next 6 months or so, so could leave it for a while until I decide what I'm doing?

Go of the 60k in my opinion

That's what I've done and I'm sure other will have

Yes I was told 60k or 5yrs whichever came first. Unlike the 100k change interval the garage I bought it from tried to fob me off with.

They're both 60k, its the years I'm unsure of.
I thought it would be the same as the golfs asz engine being 4 years, so would be due this sept/Oct its done nearly 30k since it was changed, so going by years.

But a vag specialist said 5 years, which would mean I've got no rush to change.

I was just going to get it done by sept, but if I've got another year, I could leave it a bit & save myself some cash if I decide to sell in a few months time.
But obviously don't want the risk of belts snapping..

4 years or 40k miles is what I was told when I worked at VW HQ. Mine was last done in 2010 and just turned 62k miles and getting the Cambelt, water pump and aux belt done this weekend

Mine is AVF too

Mine is coming up to 40k and will be having a belt change as I was told 4yrs or 40k. Not sure if it's different for petrols!

What sort of prices are you getting? I've got a price of £395 for cambelt & water pump. That's using genuine parts.
Think that's about right, thinking back to when I had my golf done a year or so ago.

I have a audi mechanic friend doing mine out of hours for £90 plus TPS parts (Cambelt kit, water pump, g13x2 and new aux belt) at £144 after pump surcharge is given back.

Sounds good!! Handy to have people in the know.
A mate of mine is a mechanic, he'd probably do it, but then I wouldn't get a proper receipt etc... Might have a word though.
Its worth doing the aux belt at the same time is it? Or is that part of doing the cambelt? Don't think I've had that changed at the same time on my golf.
Although just before i bought the Audi it seized an alternator pulley, so the belt is pretty new.

Yeah it's good to know people......i doNt get a receipt for the work but the parts from TPS being original come with a guarantee and know them all all anyway lol........he has been doing my cars and families for quite a few years now without issue

I am just changing it as think it is original with the car turning 10years and starting to look polished and worn

Do you have the Manuel/service history book for your car?

My A4 is also an AVF, per my Manuel the timing/cam belt should be changed every 80k miles/5 years which ever comes first.

They changed it at the HQ as a recommendation when I was there due to belts snapping well before the manual specified specs. I have ever since then done 4 years or 40k miles.

Did mine at the weekend at the 4year mark and all looked fine on belts but they can go without warning........gives me peace of mind too, as the water pump was an unknown too as Audi never changed it on the last change in 2010. All good now and I know where I stand with the car.

I was told by Audi Leeds that my 2.5 was 4 yrs / 60k miles. I've had a 2.5 belt go on me with 400 miles left and a year left (it was actually booked into York Audi the following week to have it replaced!) That cost me dearly, a 3 year old A6 2.5, cost me £3.5 thousand to put right! Bent a load of valves too.

So I do it slightly earlier if I can.

In case you're wondering why there's so many different mileage ratings for similar engines, bear in mind that the log book might have been correct when the car was new and the engine was relatively unknown, but it may not be "right" any more... the service intervals for engines are intentionally cautious to start with and then as a particular engine type builds up more track record, the manufacturer revises it for all cars, including those already being used, without replacing any parts.

That's what I was told when I asked Audi why an old 1.8T A3 I had went from something like 5y/50k (or 5y/40k!) (in the log book) to 5y/60k and eventually to 5y/75k... for the same car... irrelevant for me since it was 11yrs old and had only done about 45k, so cambelts were all on time, not mileage.

I assume that there will also be some differences to the cambelt intervals if there are relevant mechanical differences between otherwise apparently similar engines (e.g. "all 1.9PD's"), but most of the time, it's just the track record of that design.

Ouch! that sounds harsh... 4yrs is quite a short interval already, so doing it every 3.5yrs on a V6 is going to be pretty eye-watering in itself... chain cam next time? (3.0TFSI)
