Hello,

I've searched all over the internet multiple times now and theres no general guide to how far you can go with the AXX and similar but arguably better or worse BWA engines....

depending who you talk to it'll be fine with an S3 K04-064 and some people say uprating the internals is required before you put it on-roughly how far can you go on stock rods?

Just to explain my lust for answers, I've got an AXX A3 with HPFP, CAI, 3" DP decatted with a stage 1 map on, i'm looking at going stage 2 at which point it'll get a catback and an S3 intercooler with the alloy end tanks or maybe a FMIC upgrade over the S3 stock one..

I'm not really after any power figure as ultimately its down to driveablity, reliability and delivery but i'd like to put a K04 on for reliable 300bhp+ figures or very reliable, all day long power at roughly 300 give or take, maybe more

Thanks
Alex

Ive been advised my niki (r-tech) not to ko4 a AXX but to use a beach buggy ko3s hybrid and with supporting mods 330bhp is achivable and still safe on the internals

On the revo website, stage 4 - big turbo is rated from 395BHP-435bhp. then with a note on the bottom that says, rods required if you wanted to 'push' the turbo.

I only know what the S3 will do....

Even then, above 440lbs,it's best to do the bottom end.....bearings,rods and pistons.

Thanks for the replies,
This thread is exactly why it does my head in, nobody seems to know with the none S3 lumps. a company I would most likely use for the mapping has a customer with a VRS with the AXX in, they're running (from memory as he may have had it mapped again by now) 330ish bhp - but they don't give a figure for torque unless you look at a dyno graph, who cares about torque anyway, we just need to know the bhp figure for down at the pub etc lol. I don't really want to do rods as it opens up a can of worms - may aswell have put an S3 engine in, may aswell have bought an S3 etc

Thanks

We do know that the S3 rods are tougher than those in the A3 but what we all don't know is how much tougher.

I would think that you would be chancing things at anywhere near 400lbs and doing the work well before that would be a lot safer.

I agree totally, its just trying to get the right answers from people. If it needs rods for a K04 then it'll get rods - it does all get closer and closer to having been better off jus getting an S3 but I didn't get the A3 thinking about power

thanks

p.s is it easier to just stick the S3/TTS/Golf R engine in instead of just rods and which is the best i.e best cams?

Used S3 engines can be sourced for around £1k+ but the concern is how they've been used although most have some sort of warranty.

Don't worry about cams.
The stock S3 cams will see you to over 500bhp.

Thanks for the reply Alex, just wondered if there was any sizeable gain/difference if there was a TTS/ Golf R engine going and no S3 lumps on ebay at the time sort of thing

Thanks

You do not need forged rods on a K04d AXX. My wife did 25k in her MK5 DSG during the 3 years we owned it.

I think there are too many Alex's :p
What sort of map was it running? presumably a standardly equipped K04 car stage 1 sort of map?

Thanks
Alex

Out of curiosity what power and torque was it running.

Having as much information in this seems useful to a number of people with A3 2.0 TFSi engines.

It is back up for sale at the moment for £1k more than I sold it for last year. He is saying its 360bhp but its probably 330hp, can't remember the torque, with the DSG box remap it made for a very quick A to B car.

Probably safe to assume then that the torque was around the same value(as a Stg2+ S3 will max out at around 360-380bhp and 360lbs).

So,as you say,it would be safe for stock rods at that sort of level.

Sounds like plenty of power for me!
Thanks for everyone's input, atleast we have something in writing for myself and anyone else interested
We'll have to see if we can get a dyno graph for the record sort of thing-I'm sure I've seen one but i'll have to try and get a copy and post up but it might not be while the end of august till i'm there for a stage 2/3 map with the K03 - I'm off to Germany in September so i'd like it mapping again before I go :D

Thanks

ok so i emailed REVO about it, and this was their reply.

'Hi Jon,

We wouldn’t do a big turbo without doing rods/pistons, but lots of people do and run 400-435bhp peak.

It’s more about the boost levels being run, over 1.6bar I’d want internals.'

That's basically as expected, a tuner wont advocate doing something to your car which may lead to engine failure, I was told that a company wont put a stage 2 map on my car without a CAI - personally I don't like CAI's so i'll be trying the standard airbox on it after its been mapped to test this theory

thanks

It may work, and it may not.

if the airflow isn't sufficient, you will get misfires,as we found with mine, albeit at around 340bhp+,so on the A3,with less power, you may be OK.
