selling my S3 and getting a M3 E46

decided not to sort the smoking and chop it in then?

lol, it's not smoking anymore from what i can see. I filled up the oil and did 1000k and then checked again it had only used about 3mm on the dip stick so i can't explain where it was coming from. I reckon i will only get about 9 k for my S3.

Done 85k has a few extras.
Ming Blue
Sunroof
Park Sensors
18" Rs4 alloys (new PS2 michelins)
Arm Rest & Twin Cup holders
Silver Nappa
Heated Seats
6 Disc symphony
3rd Rear Head Rest
Aluminium Mirrors
Luggage Nets (never used lol can't see the point in these)
AFSH up to 69K then Private Garage.
Full 80k service Cam Belt
New Discs on Front and Pads.

I'm just fed up with the S3 now, had 2 of them and just want some more power plus i love the look of the M3 cabrio with the hard top. There are some decent ones out there for good prices.

I've just seen that the chap with the Red Ferrari colourered S3 is selling up too... very wierd!

E46 M3 - very good car I reckon, probably much more fun than the S3 to drive I would have thought. It's a BMW so will probably break more than the S3 and the extended warranties have been getting a total bashing for being more expensive than on a 911 (which I take it to mean they are made out of cheese).

It's a BMW - that said most of the total cnuts I see on the road now seem to be driving diesel Audis!

To summarise I would, how new are you thinking of getting?

I'm selling mine too, I fancy something I can track and still comute, before I bought the S3 I thought about a Vx220, anyway my other half bro has a M3 Evo 3.2 SMG, well besides the 4k bill from bmw for the new box, and the fact it now needs a new clutch as they never replaced one when they replaced the box and beemer were asked too, not good, Big car, wicked for long straight roads, he won't race me round bends, but nice looking car, drive one and see what you think /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

02 or 03 wouldnt mind getting the face lift with SMG. Must have TV and Sat nav. You can get some good colour combos with the leather.

Thinking Black Car with Red Leather.Might not be too fussy though.

Wait and see. 1 month and i will have one.

E46 M3 sexy as hell.. bit of a dodgy image though... but I wouldnt be put off by that.

I've been thinking of one of these too. Mate of mine works for Rydale BMW in Cardiff and reckons he changes the Vanos units quite regularly at a couple of grand a shot.
Anyone else heard of this ?

Chris.

Yes, Ive heard of this. I was thinking about a secondhand M3 but I've come to the conclusion that they're too fragile from what I've read. Apparently BMW have put the warranty extension up to something ridiculous like £1800 PA too, which if it's true would show how much faith they have in the cars!

I'm sure they're great when they're new. Shame I can't afford them then. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

interested in an interior swap + cash? I'm buying a 45,000 mile S3 with blue alcantara interior but want silver. Pm me if your interested.

I'd personally pay a bit more and go for an S4 cab. The dodgy image would put me off!

I fancied a 2-3 year old M3 when I sell the S3 in the next year, but after doing research, many people have had many problems, and thats put me right off.
People tend to be going the porka route due to better reliability and similar servicing costs.
As already said many times, even BMW pricing the extended warranty to stupid levels would go some way to backing up there is a high level of mechanical issues with these cars.

The M3 is more of a drivers car...
Get a good one...and a warranty...and they are sublime.

The image put me off (I seriously considered one a couple of years ago) but get past that, and they are a brilliantly focussed car.
Personally, I'd avoid the cab though...the Coupe is a nicer car to drive...

Interesting! Quite possibly true - however from the perspective of a diesel Audi driver, the drivers I dread most are drivers of diesel passats - who always seem to feel they have to prove that their car is somehow better/quicker/whatever, and take risks to do so..

My comment about an E46 - Having just sold my 330d, I would also prepare yourself for a difference in how other road users treat you.. The Audi doesnt seem to inspire aggressive resentment at all, (other than the passat issue!) but the BMW certainly does - much much harder to get let out of junctions, people deliberately blocking you etc.. dont get any of that in the more stealthy audi but I wont miss that aspect of the BMW, and mine is Blue! A colleague has a black e46 convertible - and reports vastly more agression directed at that than his previous silver one, though both were subject to it..

What is a Vanos?

I've noticed a few that are for sale state that they have had all the re-call work done. I'll have to be careful which one i buy.

I hope i don't regret buying one of these. Ess_Three the only reason i want a Cab is because of the looks. I've been driving a 325i Cabrio quite alot recently and it's lovely, even the engine is just sweet. So i'm looking forward to the sound of the M3.

I remember seeing that one of the M3 models has naff performance compared to the manual coupe. Can't remember if it was simply the SMG box or the cabrios?

Can anyone confirm the performance figures.

I also dont trust a car that has a £1200/ year warranty cost. BMW should put their money where their mouth is. If want to manufacture a 3.2L engine with 343bhp it should last the duration or by covered by warranty.

I feel like they are only designed to last till the warranty expires. reminds me of something else with a 3 in the model name actually!

Cabrio I believe...
Scuttle shake...a friend of mine with one complains of it...

True!
Or in the case of mine...didn't even last the length of the warranty before stuff was worn out.
Although some of that could have been down to me and the way the car was set up...I'd still have expected it to last longer before wearing things out / breaking them.

Ess what is scuttle shake, i've been driving this cabrio recently 325i 03 plate and the back end seems to wander across the road. Is this what you mean? if so i'm not sure i like the sound of that.
