Hi all,

I hope everyone is well.

Just to introduce myself and to let you guys know that I will be doing some modifications to my newly acquired B5. I have always been a VW fan, but I wanted to buy an A4 because of a change of scenery. I bought this a few weeks ago: 1995 AUDI A4 1.9 TDI Red 160k MOT 12/14 Tax 05/14 | eBay

And I have bought this today: AUDI A4 2.8 QUATTRO LIMO EDITION LOW MILES SILVER B5 S4 LOOKS | eBay

I plan on changing the alloys, leather interior, headlights, rear lights, steering wheel and wing mirrors. Then I will re-sell the Quattro. Is there anything that I should be aware of?

In terms of mods, so far I have had remote central locking installed, had an oil change with filter and had the car looked over. It is a very clean car being 19 years old with no rust anywhere. I am planning on painting the rear bumper and boot lid at some point along with the new installed wing mirrors and o/s rear door moulding.

I would want to install heated seats. Can this be done?

I look forward to getting to know you guys and gals.

Many thanks

Hi, welcome to audi-sport.net. Sounds like your happy with your car. You will find lots of info in the faqs thread. Enjoy the forum. :) x

Welcome to the forum.

Have to say mate I would beinclined to sell your TDi and keep the Quattro.

If you do keep the TDI there are literally endless mods you can do.

Thank you for the advice, but the Quattro is a 2.8 petrol. If fuel economy was not an issue, then I would definitely have kept it.

What other mods could I do?

What do you want from it? A nice suspension drop over a nice set of wheels is a great start. Facelift headlamps, clear Sofa Octavia repeaters are a nice touch.

Will need to consider these, thanks.

blank off the EGR valve and clean the inlet manifold out. check the turbo vanes for carbon build up as well.
blanking plates for the EGR valve can be bought on ebay for a few quid.

Ive got the 1.9tdi quattro so ive got the best of both worlds. a great handling car that inspires confidence on a nice twisty road plus great MPG.
mines has been chipped so its running with a bit more poke than standard and having driven my quattro running standard power then with the chip I can highly recommend it.

with your TDI being an early one it requires the same chip setup as mine. my ecu was done by ECU Remapping Audi VW BMW Seat Skoda Remap Chip Tuning and Im happy with the results. better MPG, better throttle response and a lot more torque makes it a nicer driving car.

as for other tuning options you can go for a 130pd turbo ( or bigger ) bigger nozzles, 130pd inlet manifold. they say 200bhp and over 400nm of torque is seeable from the old 110AFN lumps.

Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure my engine is the 90bhp and not the 110bhp. At the moment I'm looking to get the interior, alloys and bodywork done. Then once I've saved up a little money then to get busy under the hood.

yea looking at the picture of under the bonnet you are right it is a 90bhp.
same rules apply though.even fit a set of injectors from a 110bhp and you would notice a difference.
again they can be chipped if I remember right when my mate got my old 90 done his went up to around 120bhp and 270nm of torque
he says it made some difference and was better on fuel

You could have a look at Tdi Tuning on here, my 2.5 tdi up from 148 to 188 BHP and a 70 Nm torque increase, tuning box just plugs in, 5 minute job too

Thanks for the info guys. I've never chipped a car before so don't know what's involved. How much does it cost, and what do you do?

Hi Jam38,

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like your cars are going to keep you busy over the next few weeks/months.

We are forum sponsors and a specialist vehicle tuning company based in Chelmsford, Essex. We offer both remapping services and tuning boxes.

With regards to your 1995 Audi A4 1.9, due to the limitations of the memory chip within your ECU, this component is unable to be re-programmed (remapped). The physical component does not allow for its internal memory to be erased and rewritten. Typically, Bosch ECU’s found in VAG vehicles from 2001 all benefit from EProms and can be rewritten to.

We do however offer a TD Diesel Tuning Box system for your vehicle which will provide you with all the benefits of a remap. Our system would take your vehicle’s performance from 89 Bhp to 111 Bhp and your torque from 202 Nm to 253 Nm. You can also expect to receive additional fuel economy. Here’s a link to the product on our website - TD Diesel Tuning Box - Audi A4 1.9 TDI 89 Bhp / 90 PS / 66 Kw

In terms of how our systems function, they plug into your engine between the ECU and engine sensors. They receive and optimise the signals sent from the ECU and will increase and improve torque delivery. With the extra torque available, you can stay in a higher more efficient gear for longer, directly attributing to improving your economy.

With regards to some general information on our tuning box systems, they are traceless and therefore are not traceable on your ECU. If the system is removed, your vehicle will immediately go back to its standard factory settings. Therefore, the tuning box leaves no history of its use. Our tuning box systems can also be installed and removed easily and can be fitted by you in a matter of minutes, so it’s very simple! Alternatively, we offer a free fitting and ‘try before you buy’ service at our premises in Chelmsford, Essex.

Our systems are also custom programmed based on our customer’s specific requirements. They can also be reprogrammed for any future vehicles (with a VP37 fuel pump) at a small cost, saving you money in the future if you change your car.

The cost for the TD system is £124.99. We offer a 10% discount to Audi-Sport forum members. Our products are also sold with a 14 day money back guarantee to give you an opportunity to see the results first hand. Our systems also have a 3 year warranty.

Should you have any general tuning questions at all or require any further information on our products, then please feel free to contact our technical team on 01245 924 400. We are always more than happy to help fellow forum members!

Kind regards,

Steve

Dont fit a tuning box, they're ****.

They dont "recieve and optimise" anything, they lie to the ECU and fudge the output.

Just because the ROM cant be rewritten doesnt mean it cant be changed, you just need the skills to desolder and replace the chip, like folk used to do before the flash jockeys of today came along. Dont lie to people saying they cant be changed to try and flog a substandard bodge.

Thanks for the info guys. I will need to do some reading as there are many pros and cons, but feel free to add any links that will be beneficial to not only myself, but to others.

Hi Aragorn,

Yes, the ECU found in Jam38’s vehicle can have the memory chip de-soldered and physically replaced, of which we do also provide this service. However, it is an invasive process and exceptionally costly, priced at £389.99 the customer may consider this to be un-cost effective on a vehicle which is currently 19 years old. It is very unusual for customers to choose this option of tuning over less invasive methods, primarily because of the costs.

Since we provide multi channel tuning boxes, remaps (OBD and TRI-Core) and chip replacement we are 100% non-bias towards which method the client goes for. It’s totally personal choice as to what method of tuning our customers opt for and totally depends on their own individual circumstances.

However in this particular instance we would still recommend a tuning box over this type of remap. But it’s up to the customer to decide.

Regards,

Steve

An update:

I have changed the rear lights and headlights - they were a pain! Had to reconfigure the wiring which I wasn't expecting. My uncle was on hand to help. Also, when fitting the new headlights, there was a gap, so we got some old rubber door seal and have put it in place. Looks a treat.

I am planning on changing the interior this weekend. Is it a long/big job? Any advice would be appreciated?

I haven't taken any but will do. I'm not sure how to upload photos, if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I changed all the door cards today and installed the front leather seats. This was a monster task! I have the rear seat left to do.

Did you fit or wire in the heated seats?

I fitted heated pads to my standard B5 seats and wired them to the standard heated seat controls via the kufatec loom.

If you're interested in a Facelift bonnet grill or Facelift vents let me know. I got both.

Not sure really, the column probably swaps right over. Might need to use the later stalk assembly, not sure either way.

Pop the bits off in a scrappy and see if they fit the older style!

ive got a face lift column which is making me wonder. would need a facelift wheel though and a facelift avant wiper stalk. just wondering about fitting the facelift cc stalk..

yeh i'm not 100% sure if the wiring is all interchangable. I know the later cars (they changed late 97, its not a facelift thing) have a seperate plug for the indicators, and some metal contact things between the two halves of the housing that exist on the early cars are not there on the later ones.

The later wiper stalk also has the variable intermit option which your earlier car doesnt support. Maybe its more complex than i first thought.

Unless you can retain the early stalks and just use the later wheel and airbag ring.

I thought you might have kept the steering wheel off the V6 too

I did try to, but when we took off the front portion (air bag), the connections were different. I didn't want any hassle so I left it as it was.

The seats didn't have the heated seat element, so I'm afraid that was not installed. I also think, that is a little too complicated for me to do.

Tell me more about the bonnet grill and face lift vents.

I want a smaller sportier steering wheel. Anyone point me in the direction of the correct size and fittings? I want a straight swap over and no headache please.
