Hello all,

I have had my car for almost a year now and had it tuned by tdi tuning in march. The gains were very impressive, but there is a problem with consistency ( one minute the car is responsive the next it isn't) I was told it could be due to the torque limiter on my gearbox not allowing further gains. If this is the case, do any of you know what I can do to get the mosst out of my engine. I was considering to remap the gearbox but I don't know the process.

Please advise.

Syed

Is it possible to trade it in for a 184ps car?

Steve, it's actually a mobility vehicle so I wouldn't be allowed to do that. However I would love to have had the 184 quattro, but couldn't because of my age being 22 and it wasn't available to lease.

You really do not want to override the torque limiter as it could lead to premature failure of the DMF...

So what would be the best solution? I like the way it pulls with thhe tuning box but the way it switches off Is really annoying me now -_-

There is no torque limiter on the DSG box, if you exceed the Torque limit your gearbox will go pop, simple as that. It's not a gearbox issue if it works one minute then doesn't the next.

Regards

Hmm, could the issue be the actual tuning box? Or is it just my car having a fussy engine? Really don't know what to do...

How much power are you losing when it's not responsive. If it's really sluggish it might be your engine going in to limp mode although I would have thought you'd get a warning light if that happened.

The car loses its low down torque when it plays up, sometimes I really have to thrash it to wake it up, but that doesn't always work.. I'm considering too get a dtuk pedal box I've heard that can dramatically change the way the car responds

A pedal box will do nothing to cure the problem, talk to the supplier of your tuning box. Maybe send it away to get it looked at?

regards

I've done that quite a few times, and they can't find anything wrong with the tuning box, they did say though that every engine reacts differently maybe that's why my car doesn't always respond -_-. The car could be fine a week, then it will play up for a few days, then ok for another week. Very frustrating :/

Take the tuning box off. Try it for a week without the box and see if the car acts normal?

regards

I have done that in the past, and when I did put it back on, I felt it quite a lot but then it went back to square one -_- it's like a cycle where the cars performance will keep rising till it reaches a peak, then drop down again.

How are you finding the pedal box?

Interesting to find someone else with the 1.6 A3 on Motability! I have the same car and was considering getting it tuned. Can I ask, what kind of performance increase have you had (when its running well, that is)??

Mark James the difference is quite significant. Atm my car had a few fault codes that needed to be cleared so right now it's running very well! I think the power is up to 140ps and torque about 243lbs which is basically the same as a 2litre. @abyss the pedal box really is like the icing on the cake! 0 60 times have gone up from 8.8seconds tuned to 8.1! But it feels much faster than that, so I am very happy with the results :) mark James I would definently recommend tuning your vehicle as the 1.6 can feel very under powered at times, but having said that it can also feel quite nippy. How is your car's performance wise?

I came from a 1.6L petrol (no turbo), so from word go this car has felt pretty powerful (i know in real terms it isn't). I am glad its not only me who thinks it feels faster than it is - it feels way quicker to 60 than 10 seconds, which it currently is.

I have the same issue with it sometimes feeling under power - it just depends if I hit the gear change right. If I am in dynamic mode sitting at about 20MPH, it feels like it absolutely flies when I accelerate.

Anyway onto other matters, I think I will definitely have it tuned. Could you give me a rough cost that you paid - and have you had any issues with them noticing it had been tuned whilst servicing??

Also one more quick question, were you lucky enough to grab the S-Line model? It was only on the list for 3 or 4 days, I managed to get in during that time, but I feel bad for others who missed it!

<controversial question>

Is it me or are other tax payers on this thread a bit peeved that someone is in a position to talk about tuning a mobility vehicle which is funded out of the tax payer's purse ?

</controversial question>

Oh ok, i still remember when it wasnt tuned and i used to put it in dynamic, it was quite capable, however once its tuned the car even pulls strongly in comfort! Feels like your driving a bigger car. I would recommend getting it tuned by DTUK or TDI tuning, i brought my twin channel box for £350. Its abit pricey but well worth it! Unfortunately i didnt get the s line trim as i ordered in february ( waited till mid september for delivery :/) got the car in sport trim but upgraded the alloys, added a few options and the xenon light pack. So in a way my car looks almost as good as an s line lol - i have not had my first service yet but when i do il take the tuning box to be safe and then put it back on once the service is complete

auroan not everyone who is using a mobility vehicle is as you think they are. I understand before the 25k cap was issued a lot of people took advantage of the scheme, but that doesn't mean that the person who actually needs the vehicle is at fault. For people who wanted the 2litre tdi a3 on motability but couldn't, I don't see any harm tuning a 1.6 to perform like a 2litre. It's also personal preference especially knowing that the cars available on motability have been restricted, not everyone abuses the benefits of this scheme.

Auroan, I can understand your angle but I would have to agree with Syed. Prior to the 25k cap, the system was abused, however what the majority of press coverage failed to mention was that the buyer would always funded the difference in cost of the car. At one point you could even get a Range Rover Sport on Motability, but the cost was £40,000 deposit for 3 years use - i.e. they still only gave the standard car allowance.

The times it got abused were when the extras came into play on ultra-expensive cars - insurance, tires, windows etc were covered, which were considerably more expensive for those vehicles than e.g. a Ford Focus or an A3.

With regard to the current system, the state of play is that we need a car to assist with our disabilities, and Motability agree with manufacturers which cars they can offer within the budget. Within this, it is fair that we seek to get the nicest car within both our means and what the car list offers, providing it is suitable. People probably think - why should I have an S-line A3 rather than an SE model (for example) or a lower class car e.g. Ford Focus - but I paid the required difference for that trim (+£4000) and in the long run Motability benefit because they get a car back with a higher resell value - I don't see my additional deposit back.

In terms of tuning, this for me is just another personal preference, no different to getting the windows tinted or adding other options. We pay for it - it doesn't damage the car - and repair costs fall on us personally if the car is returned damaged. Motability are again now very strict on the size of engines that are on offer.

Completely different topic - Auroan, did you use the York dealership, how did you find them? They were terrible for me.

Cool, cheers Syed I will have a good think about it, probably end up doing it. I know the feeling, I ordered in January and took delivery end of July - the wait was terrible!

I was looking to do exactly what you did, getting the light pack etc. Then for some reason, the S-Line model appeared in the list for a couple of days - so timing was perfect for me.

Interesting regarding the first service - mine is due next week, will definitely get someone who knows what they are doing to remove the tuning stuff during servicing if I have it done

The wait was terrible indeed lol, I remember visiting this forum during my wait as a non member it was quite depressing especially when I did not see many a3s on the road. I see a few now but still not as many as I would have thought.. you will definently be happy with the results with the tuning box, I'm probably going to go to a local garage to remove the box when I do my first service, it is quite straight forward to install it though. Also, I would recommend the pedal box! It really does feel like some sort of stage 2 remap!

I'm not peeved, but I understand where you are coming from ........ I would be more peeved if he had the same car given to him that I worked hard for the 2.0 tdi s line however he hasn't and has spent his own money ,from what I can tell , to get the power he wanted.

I think the cap is a good idea and should be lower, there's getting around and there's getting around in style..... No need for an a3 when a focus will do?

It's off topic, and I'm not trying to hi jack the thread . I hope the O.P sorts the problem with his car / gearbox out.

Once again, I think some people out in opinions on half given or known information. I am not on a motability scheme, but I knew someone who was, and If you knew about the motability scheme, you would know that you are given a certain limit to spend, a monthly limit also, and on these so called "more expensive" cars, you have to make up the difference.

Also this monthly expense for the car is actually paid for by the person, as if they chose not to have a car on the motability scheme then the monthly cost of the car would be going into their pockets, but they choose to use it on a car... So when you think about it, they are paying monthly, putting deposits down, paying for extras, and have the chance to buy the car at the end of the 3 years... Now tell me, how does this differ from people say financing a car?

/Rant. On topic, op, I'm really looking into these pedal boxes you've got for my A3 on order (which I paid cash for if it makes anyone feel better), are they worth the money? Would you recommend them?

Cheers.

I agree, I say it's an abuse of the system.

If they have spare income to add to the mobility scheme why shouldn't they buy their own car instead of the taxpayer paying for it. I thought this scheme was for people that needed transport due to their disability but just couldn't afford it.

If they don't have enough spare cash to pay for a car but they should at least be means tested and contribute to the cost and be limited to the capped price. They get easy access to a car but are not content and want something better, a bit selfish isn't it?

There's some genuinely hard-up people out there and I think it's great they can't benefit from this scheme, but some people are just gaming the system IMO.

Nobody on any benefits should get any more than they actually need.

Once again, someone with an opinion without knowing facts... They are paying for the car themselves, as they are choosing to use the money they would have in their pockets to use for a car instead... Which they also have to pay deposits and can buy the car at the end of the lease agreement, which how does this differ from financing a car?

"Means tested", everyone who gets disability allowance gets "tested" for eligibility each year, with tested taken to prove, and for the people who actually get chance to go onto motability scheme have the "highest allowance of disability allowance" which means yes, they need a car for transport. People who also are disabled but do not receive the highest disability allowance, have to pay their own money to get a car on the scheme.. So once again how is this any different?

If you want to moan about Tax payers, why don't you moan about people abusing the tax systems. And avoiding tax, and others abusing the benefits system, rather than people that have paid their tax's, had a physical disability, and are putting towards someone to help them be more mobile and life a somewhat normal life.

Edit: double post, my bad. OP, did you get your box from "PedalBox uk"? As I've just seen they may do it for my car, and was gunna order one for when it arrives.

Yeah, tax avoidance and excess benefits are wrong IMO.

The money that you say would be in their pocket anyway still comes from benefits, so they must get too much if they've spare to buy extras.

My worry is that if people squeeze too much out the system people with greater needs will lose out and it'll probably be kids clothes or food they need not a tuning kit for an Audi.

Anyway this is a prickly subject and a bit political so let's just agree to disagree.

Yes, it's from DTUK though, I would order it on the phone as it's slightly cheaper. What a3 have you ordered?

Ok cool, thanks for the tip! I'll have to phone them up! I've ordered the 1.4TFSI COD 150bhp version, and was wondering if to get a tuning box, or a pedal box like yourself, or both if it made that much of a difference lol,

Martinbanshee, you are so misinformed. Just because they receive a disability living allowance / personal independence payment, it does not equate thay they are exclusively 'on benefits'. These guys are most probably working and paying tax. If you don't understand how the scheme or the disability allowance(s) work, then don't comment on it.

If you don't like it, complain to your MP - that is your official democratic right.

I am informed, who said anything about exclusively on benefits?

Is there a financial benefit of the mobility scheme to the cost of the tax payer? Yes.
If there wasn't there's no point to the scheme.

If there's then money to buy go faster parts then someone is getting money they don't need.

I'm sure some people in this country thinks money grows on trees. We've got a massive deficit we need to reduce, or don't you realise.

And by the way, I never brought the subject up, I replied to someone else's comment on the subject.

A tuning box with a pedal box will literally transform your car! Especially with your engine size which is already quite powerful!

You said...
"The money that you say would be in their pocket anyway still comes from benefits, so they must get too much if they've spare to buy extras. "

My point is that if they have spare money it could come from any source, not necessarily 'benefits'. The purpose of DLA/PIP is not about providing income, it is simply an allowance associated with having certain care needs and/or mobility issues - regardless of wealth. A bit like child allowance - just another thing which the taxpayer foots the bill for - although at least that one is means tested now.

I don't want to force my own views on anyone, or imply I agree or disagree with the scheme - just trying to state the facts.

I apologise if I misunderstood your comments, I'm not interested in an argument.

Me neither, its car forum after all. I'm staying off this subject now.

Yes me neither, but for the sake of the person in the light, they are however not as you put it, using spare money to pay for tuning of the car.. Just to get it straight to others, you get a certain amount (depending on the level of disability allowance) to put towards either a car, medical adaptions etc.. And you don't get the "change" you either use it or you don't.. What you have seen in this thread, is someone basically saying they have the car on the scheme... But will be using their own money to adapt/tune/ pay for fitting of the car, not how it was out used by "spare money" from the scheme. Hope this helps, that was all I was trying to say.
