Does anyone know if the modified steering rack is officially available?

I have been waiting months now and there are a couple of other jobs I need done but I think I'll just book the car in to get all the other problems sorted first.

Yes it is according to my dealer and I am due a call any day to say it is in and have it fitted. This is to cure the left turn creaking issue. The head technician said immediately that this was a known problem and that there was a modified rack to cure it. However, the dealer also said that sometimes, Audi are still issuing the old version and they need to be checked on delivery to ensure that it is a modified one!

Got my steering rack replaced yesterday to cure the creaking on left hand turning and the lumpy assistance. Modified rack fitted and software upgrade.

Only done 30 miles but no creaking and no lumpiness so far. Time will tell, but you never know......

Rob you wouldn't have any details available on the part number for the rack would you.

I'm going to phone the dealer this morning and have a word as this is getting ridiculous now.

I am afraid not. All I know is that they were available from about Feb / March time, but there was a lead time getting one for me (ordered on 10 March).

They need to have been produced after a certain date but the dealer said they have had instances of replacement racks being ordered for the creaking issue and the older ones still being sent.

They were absolutely clear that there was a modified part available and that the creaking issue was a known problem, the modified part being designed to cure it.

Good luck!

Rob,

Who's your dealer, just in case whoever I decide to use starts claiming ignorance? Be nice to be able to refer them to another dealer who are stating it's a known problem.

Cheers.

Maidstone, in Kent.

Tempting fate as ever, but no creaking or lumpiness so far after 500 miles...

robB,is that maidstone audi ,i take it they are aware of the problems,as its my local aswell.

just asking, incase it happens,at least i'll have some amo.

Whetstone Audi in London are now aware of the problem as they are fixing mine next tuesday

hallelujah /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Aberdeen have now recognised the fault and have ordered the modified rack for me.

Thought I'd post a quick update,

Car collected on tuesday and the A4 SE dropped off as a loaner

Heard nothing Tues afternoon, all day wed and today, until I phoned them at 3 - They think I'll see it back tomorrow! How long did everyone elses replacements take?

Personally I think not hearing anything and having to phone myself is pretty poor TBH

Sounds very slow to me - mine was easily done in a day, together with other bits too.

Thanks Rob - not sure what they are playing at, will hopefully find out tomorrow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You'd think, given that mine was in to SC twice for the same problem, they'd call me to advise there's a 'cure'...

You'd think they'd phone me back and tell me what's happening!! Still not had a call returned from the useless &*^*^

Its back!! and so far no more stupid noises from the steering, also the seats have too (so far) stopped creaking and the aircon hasn't clicked

I'd be really happy apart from the fact that the interior was covered in odd marks and the footrest was covered in chewing gum, oh and 1/4 of a tank of fuel had been used..................and stevie wonder had washed it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif

how loud is the creaking on the steering rack, for those that have had the fault,
ive noticed a creaking, but only with the radio off,and the car is stationary,
since this thread,i suppose ive been listening a bit harder, and looking for it,but it does creak, for sure.

its (or was!) really quite noticable when turning left and moving slowly, you can almost feel it through the wheel. mine still does it when stationary which i would expect as its trying to turn quite fat wheels /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mate SC are the most incompetent bunch of idiots I have ever had to deal with, so much so I am thinking of changing car as I can't put up with their /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif any longer.
