Hi,

I got my Manual S3 ( without Hold Assist Option ) on Monday night and I'm still trying to get used to the EPB.

I'm sure when I brought it home on Monday Night I parked it on my driveway ( which is on a slope ) and when I came back out later to take it back out I just put it into reverse and pulled away without releasing the EPB. It released automatically.

However last night and this morning I tried the same it just won't budge. It shows a message on the DIS saying " Please Release the Parking Brake" or words to that effect. This means I have to find the bite and release the brake like my old car.

Am I imagining what happened on Monday night or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

it automatically disengages when your seatbelt is in and you put it in D.

Daft question but was the door closed properly and as previously said your seatbelt. What I have also found with mine is when on a really steep hill it hesitates slightly before releasing to ensure you don't roll back. Maybe go slightly higher on the clutch or give it a bit more gas

Seatbelt on, door closed. Giving it more gas just feels like trying to pull away in my old car with the handbrake on. It also gives the message in the DIS.

Got me thinking about mine now.

I'm cleaning the car at dinner, I think I'll try each permutation of the above and see what happens.

Cheers, I'll be trying mine tonight as well. I phoned the wife to get her to try again but she won't even touch it yet because of the EPB.

Not entirely a bad situation though!

ok, the car is cleaned and I've been playing.

EPB on on all tests (Kind of a obvious statement).

Seat belt on and door closed in S, D and R. No errors
Seat belt on and door open in S, D and R. No errors.
Seat belt off and door open in S, D and R. It errors.

You only need your seatbelt on but bear in mind that this is in a A8 Auto (don't think they did a manual??) and I'm assuming you guys would have the sort of system and safety measures involved.

On mine (also manual), I let the clutch bite and then there must be some revs applied and it releases automatically. I couldn't quite believe I had to put my seatbelt on though each time just to move the car a few feet up or down the drive, I finally found out that I can manually release it (without seatbelt on) by pressing brake pedal and pressing the brake button down.

The logic is different depending on what model it is. For instance, the 2014 A4 manual will release the parking brake just by lifting the clutch in 1st / Reverse without applying any acceleration. The A3 on the other hand only releases the parking brake when the clutch is lifted AND some acceleration is applied.

Will try again later and report back. Its possible my seatbelt wasn't on I suppose.
I'll do door closed, seatbelt on and see what happens.
I guess if it doesn't release there must be an issue?

Thanks Guys.

Yet you don't need to be in gear, which is just insane IMO.

I took it to Audi Nottingham over it, they did ****** all really and just told me that it works the same as all the other cars they tried so must be fine. All well and good until the day I accidentally don't put it properly into gear on a hill, go to move off and end up rolling backwards into the guy behind!

Thanks guys, tried it again tonight and its working fine. Must have been the seatbelt I guess.

Will keep aware of the thing cemerson mentioned.

Not that I doubted it, but you're right! Seems very odd logic to be able to release when not in gear. Only thing I can think of is to help in the event of a clutch / gearbox failure (if you couldn't get it in gear) at least you'd be able to release the parking brake and push it!
