Hi All

I might have been a bit silly but bought a 2014 Audi A3 flat bottom steering off ebay. Its really nice and I want to fit it into my 2010 A5. I know the connectors will be different and I think I can sort that out as others have done in the past, but my main question is will an 2014 A3 airbag work in my 2010 A5?

I have the shield type airbag

But the airbag I want to fit is this round one

I have found out there are three types of round airbag:
1: Adaptive (This might be what I have..... but have no idea)
2: Single stage (This is what the new airbag above is..i think)
3: Dual stage (Not sure what models have these)

Thanks in advance

iv never seen a single stage round bag
as far as I know there all dual stage.

Airbag isn't compatible

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know which airbag I need?

I think it might be: 8K0 880 201 AC 6PS. Would this work?

- I have found out this is the wrong shape airbag.

Been doing some further digging and I think I have narrowed down the airbag part number I need is: 8K0 880 201 AE 6PS.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Hi !

I have the same problem... Try to find an airbag dual stage ( Audi A4 8K and A5 is dual stage airbag )

Sorted the airbag problem: So for a 2010 A5 with the shield type airbag you need the following airbag part number: 8K0 880 201 AE

So on the weekend I swapped:

Very happy with the result and feel of the new wheel. But I do have a problem. Can you code the buttons from an A3 into the A5. Currently my buttons don't work. Not sure if the connector isn't in properly behind the airbag as the buttons don't even light up. The horn works though.

I`m sorry to inform you, but this buttons will never work in your A5.

This weekend i also retrofit the steering wheel.

The solution to the airbag: i use a resistor 2.2omhs.

The buttons ( see the difference ) i swap from another steering wheel.

Thought that might be the case. Thanks for the reply.

Will be on the look out for some buttons to swap over. Guessing its just swapping them over?

Yap, just swap

NAV button do not have any function, but the others is the same function that you already have in previous steering wheel.

Thanks. But why doesn't the NAV button work? Is there some extra coding required to make it compatible with the MMI 3G system. On the old steering wheel if press the volume control in that was the same as a NAV button so not sure what the difference is now it's just a separate button.

Can I ask also: does the sound get muted when you press the volume wheel in?

It would depend on a number of things, wheel type & modules installed on the car, so you need to research it further.

I fitted this wheel over a year ago & discovered the incompatibility of the newer wheels with extra buttons, best/cheapest option is to sell the wheel & buy the one with lesser, as the buttons alone cost a fair bit.

NAB button do not work.

Volume scroll button when pressed make a resume of NAV status, like your previous steering wheel, do not make mute.

Can i ask what the issue is with fitting the A3 airbag? Looks the same as the A4/5 one, I'm guessing it just brings the light on?

Thanks for clarifying which buttons work jimypt. shame the volume can't be muted using the steering wheel. Audi do make retrofits a PITA sometimes.

NHN - I can get the buttons for a relatively cheap price so happy to keep the wheel and change over.

When I change to the lowline buttons there must be a way to make the separate NAVi button and the volume mute button to work. Wonder if the steering control module can be updated / changed to then allow the extra buttons to work as after all this interprets the signals from the steering wheel to go to the rest of the car.

Can the adaptations be changed within the module? E.g. when you upgrade from pre-fl to facelift rear lights to have to tell the light module the new wire configuration so they work. What do you think?

The newer A3 airbag is a single stage airbag. The older A5's have an adaptive airbag (so two connectors on the back) and the newer A5 models have a dual stage airbag (also two connectors on the back). As NHN states, the A3 airbag is not compatible in the A5.

Done a fair bit of research so the airbag required which is the right shape, right connector and more importantly will go off in the event of an accident is 8K0 880 201 AE. Did full scan of all airbags when I swapped over and everything is ok. Airbag light comes on when you start the car and then goes out. As per MOT regulations.

My main problem now is the steering buttons. But hey I like a challenge.

Thanks for the reply. I've just fitted an airbag kit from a 2013 A5 in a 2011, it came with the round airbag but I also bought the steering wheel off the guy along with the SWCM & switch pack. Swapped everything and it all works fine so I guess I'm lucky. The new round airbag only had one connector on the back though, the other was a blank that was supported within a housing. Looked exactly as per the picture in your first post, hence my question. There were no faults in the airbag module and the system operates correctly - light on the off. The only issue I had was the newer passenger bag was a single stage, the old was a twin plug so I had to source that separately (only seemed to be fitted to late 2010/2011 cars).

Interesting. Mines an March 2010 so not sure if things changed soon after that. I have kind of gone the long way round buying it all separately. But should sort itself out in the end when I get rid of some bits.

Can I ask if the NAVi button works on yours and the volume mute?

Mine has the low line buttons as detailed above, all works ok inc voice recognition button. As far as I'm aware iNav will only work with the facelift MMI but that's going in soon. I haven't actually played with the iNav button and volume wheel, I'll report back tomorrow for you.

Hey VAG_BADGER. If you get a chance this weekend to check that would be great.

I have MMI 3G HDD which i'm guessing you have also have. If you are upgrading to MMI 3g+ what part number is it. Will it have audi connect? Would like to upgrade this myself as well. Thanks

So changed over the buttons tonight from the high line to low line. Can confirm they now light up and work. Very happy now.

VAG_BAGDER has also sent me a message saying that even with the new steering wheel control module the iNAV button does not work. This must only be compatible with the newer MMI 3G+ systems. slightly expensive to upgrade that, so will just leave it as it is.

Might try looking into recoding the SWCM. Any VCDS experts on hand to point me in the right direction or if it's possible?

hey guys. i have bought an a5 airbag 8R0880201G. would it be possible to fit in into an 2008 a3? it is a dual stage airbag, with an a3 steering cable will it work? thanks for help.
