Apple CarPlay

I'd really hope they can upgrade firmware on existing 8v cars for this new functionality. Or is that wishful thinking

Wishful thinking I bet. Car makers are so far behind the rest of the technology world in what should be expected of a piece of hardware that you pay for it's depressing really. The idea of a user-updatable software for the car's entertainment systems (obviously not for safety critical systems) is a long way off I think, car makers are too used to just charging people for changes they want to make and locking things down so you can't do what you prefer with the system.

The brand new infotainment and communications platform we now use has been in development for a long time, with the 8V A3 being the first production car to demonstrate it in a finished state. With that in mind, I can't see how Audi couldn't have seen the developments from Google and Apple coming and either worked with them or at least implemented enough flexibility to allow both systems to work without having to go back to the drawing board again.

So to answer your question, I think we will just about be ok. I might even be as bold as to suggest that the 8V S3 will be the Guinea pig model, as has already been demonstrated with LTE hardware and Android Auto.

I think so.

Google gives us a simulated ride with Android Auto

Wishful thinking, they want us to buy new cars not provide upgrades. Take the change in the ps increase of the 1.4 COD to 150 for example, I am sure all it is is an alteration in the mapping but I've not heard that audi will provide us lowly 140ps with an upgrade.

The onboard computer in the A3 is modular and upgradeable; someone posted an interview with one of the technicians or a white paper on here a while ago.

It might just be wishful thinking but it's nice to imagine a world where a hardware upgrade to onboard computer would be done FOC and as part of a main dealer service. If this is too unrealistic then if settle for a reasonably priced option to upgrade as the hardware became available.

Modular and upgradeable for Audi, not necessarily for the consumer. If you did want to buy a newer unit, it would cost thousands from Audi to do this.

It would be nice if they would do it FOC or at least at a good discounted price, I take it that the current system/ computer would be capable of running such an operating system?

That is a good question, and until someone takes one apart we will not know...

If this is the case I'm sure the aftermarket will be able to serve us.

Well the more details to come might be promising regarding compatibility, fingers crossed!!

I am pretty sure its about £100 for Audi to eneable the SD based satnav as an after market purchase.

So a full firmware update and all the stuff that goes with it is going to be some decent money. It will be, in true audi fashion, an add on option across the range.

I hope to be proved wrong, it would be so nice and a well recieved change.

The SD nav is £500 I'm afraid.

I know the cost to buy it is about £500, but then there is an additional installation cost. I know Audi and dealers have to make some money, but I ust wish they would learn not so much money on everything. Heres hoping that moving into a tech arean, where people are less keen to hand over cash so easily things will improve

Do you think carplay / Android auto will be available on the A3 next year? If yes, at what price do you think they will include this option? As standard? Same cost as basic sat Nav? Part of Audi Connect with similar cost? Even more expensive?

I haven't ordered the car yet and I am thinking if I should wait for a year as Android auto seems like something I would like to have if it is available at a reasonable price. I think 3-4 years from now carplay / Android auto will be a cheap option on almost all cars, but I suspect the first ones next year might be expensive.

You're seriously thinking of postponing a car purchase for a year in the hope of better phone integration?!

Personally I think it will be several years before these systems mature properly, by which time you'd probably be looking to replace a car you'd bought this year anwyay.

Where I live Audi doesn't have maps for Sat Nav, but Google Maps work fine. So if Android Auto would be a not very expensive option then I wouldn't mind to wait for a year.

It's a interesting one as both options add navigation ( very basic at the moment but gets the job done ). It's got to cost at least £500 or Audi will loose out. But most likely going to be £1,500 included with tech pack.

Agreed - anyone thinking this will be a cheaper way to have in-car navigation because the phone is doing the work is going to be disappointed - there's no way the manufacturers are going to do themselves out of that profit.

There are other disadvantages too - it needs a smartphone to work. If more than one person drives the car then each will have to have their own smartphone in order to get navigation. Also will the manufactures support both the Apple and Android systems or pick one or the other?

I prefer built-in nav that's always there and doesn't depend on a phone to work. Of the in-built systems, I much prefer Audis to any other manufacturers - they've done a good job.

In my case built-in nav is not an option.

But generally speaking, I think carplay / Android auto will change the landscape of the car navigation / entertainment systems in just a couple of years. The current systems will go the way of the Symbian OS of Nokia.

Audi are supporting both methods and will be a dual choice option depending on what phone you plug in.

But yer the Audi MMI Tech pack with Connect is a brilliant system and is packed with features and very polished.

Why is it not a option for you?

I doubt the manufacturer systems will be going away that quickly if at all...

Audi doesn't have maps for Cyprus, where I live.

Google and Apple are giant tech companies and can do a better job than any individual car maker. Furthermore, their systems will be on many different cars, and open for developers to create new apps. I believe car manufacturers will merely "surrender" and will not even attempt to compete with Google and Apple on the Operating System level. They will just concentrate on the quality of the hardware and try to offer some unique features on top of carplay / Android auto which will differentiate them from their competitors.

I guess it depends on what apps work with CarPlay or the Android equivalent. If I could connect my iPhone to my head unit and have it display and control my TomTom app then I would be over the moon. The TomTom app is better than every head-unit satnav I have seen to date.
