Hi All

Just a bit curious, Our A4 went on fire whilst we were shopping last week, We have the CCTV footage showing that no one set the thing on fire it just starts smoking then goes into flames. The car is a complete burn out.

I had a look on the net and couldn't find much about audi's going on fire, But quite a few people are telling me they have heard about call backs on these A4's because of a problem that can cause a fire.

Are people making this up? also is it worth complaining to audi about it, No-one was hurt and my wife and baby were not in the car thankfully. But we were only out the car 7 minutes when it went up. we always stop at shops while one of us runs in the shop just glad we all got out. so could of easily been different.

I knew a fella in work (he'sleft now) who had it happen to him with a VW but he had bought his from new and he got a payout, Mine was 7 years old and bought second hand so probably would not stand a chance.

Here are some pics

I would certainly contact audi for some input & maybe they will investigate, but its 7 years old, they may be interested purely for R&D, but hey don't ask don't get.

Scary. Did you have any aftermarket parts or extra sounds system items?

Yeh maybe I'll give them a call and see what they say.

It had an rns-e installed when I bought it which may not of been in from day 1 I'm not sure. Everything else is deffo standard.

Insurance are investigating the cause but I doubt they will find anything in that mess.

Appears to have started in the drivers side front corner. Oil leak onto a hot turbo ? , had you just come off the motorway. Luckily no one injured and not parked near other vechicles.

Karl.

I agree with Karl. Offside front seems to be where it's all happened! All plastics are completely melted in this section. Other than turbo I'm not sure what else could just combust in that area.
What electrics are around there that still have a feed when engine is off?

Isn the egr valve engine offside?
Just thinking maybe the egr pipe had split

I had a wiring loom come loose in my old TDI avant which burnt through on the EGR cooler pipe. If I wasnt driving at the time that could have caused some grief

Not been on motorway but had been driving for about 30 mins or so. Just been the petrol station before hand and put £80 diesel in. :(

When I had it service in Jan they said a had a slight oil leak but it was nothing to be concerned about just yet. So maybe it is a bit of oil fine on the turbo.

I know nothing about engines etc so wouldn't have a clue what what nearby.

It would have to a pretty serious oil leak and even then I doubt theres anything hot enough under the bonnet to ignite it, especially when its parked up with ign off.

I would imagine it would be electrical or a heat shield missing like the one on the air filter box.
Its difficult to light diesel and oil,but I suppose it can happen.
What jobs have been done on this car recently.

it had a service, cam belt change and water pump in January other than that no work has been done. I only bought it in November. only had a 3 month warranty

It was the B6 petrol models that were catching on fire due to faulty coil packs, and Audi had a recall on them. Never heard of a B7 TDi catching before.

cheers B5nut at least that's puts that question to bed.

should find out what the insurance engineers think it was next week. (was promised it was gonna be this week)

No mate. they didn't get to the bottom of it? Strange.

Got a decent offer though. Should get the money this week. Looks like were going for an A6 this time.
