Yes they are GREAT engines, only wish I had bought one and not a 2.0tdi. With regular maintenance they are good for 250,000 and some have gone much longer.

I was in the same boat as you two years ago mate and went for the 1.9 and haven't regretted it, think it's a great engine compared to the 2.0. As long as they're serviced regularly they're pretty close to being bullet proof. I had the same engine in a golf and it was trouble free for 7yrs. I've just actually bought a second one as I need an avant now so selling my saloon, it was remapped to about 145/150bhp and goes plenty quick enough for me and still returns 50+mpg, avant will be getting same map soon. Only downside depending how you look at it is that the B7 A4s only come with 5 speed boxes, bothered me a bit to start with but you soon get used to it.
I don't think there's many 1.9 owners in the B7 section here hence the poor response to your post but as the 1.9 was much more popular in the B6 shape it's may be worth a post over there to get a better response.

Since the wife has had her A4 I now tend to notice other A4 models I see out and about, have to say an awful lot are the 1.9 engine and the ones I see dont seem to hang about either!
Bloke at work had one in a gold reckoned it was touching 60 mpg most of the time and it was chipped
Iirc when they were new there was a club called the 1000 mile club and all you had to do was get a 1000miles per tankful!

Great engine. As said above as long as service regularly they are great

Thanks guys for the advice do the bke engines suffer from oil pump and balance shaft problems
Is there any thing I should look out for besides the usual checks
What are the common problems on the bke engines
Thanks guys

One of the reasons the 1.9tdi is so bullet proof is it doesn't have a balance shaft!
The oil pump on the 1.9tdi has a robust and proven drive.
The biggest issue with the 1.9tdi will be finding one at a "reasonable cost " as they are becoming an ever popular buy on the used car scene and are fetching premium prices.

The 1.9 is the last bulletproof engine, I have had 4 and all were fairly regularly abused lol, no issues whatsoever, and as above they are becoming popular due to the ****e newer tdi's

I have a 55 plate 1.9tdi Avant with the BKE engine.

Mine has 151k on it but you would think it's more like 60k by the way it looks/drives.

I remapped it with a conservative remap which makes it a lot smoother to drive and I still get around 50-54mpg around town. It took a week or so after remapping to get back to that average while the engine readjusted.

Paid £2995 for it last month. ( rear wipe motor was broken as was middle-high brake light) Due a cam-belt change according to log. Though my mechanic friend says it looks recent anyway!?

Dealer was cheaper for spares than online
