Hi all,

Does anyone know when the model year changes?

I guess the current model year is 2014, but I think the 2015 model will come out Autumn time, but I'm not sure. Chances are it will come out a week after my car is built.

Does anyone know if any changes are planned in the coming model year?

Tyre pressure monitoring HAD to be added as it is mandatory on all cars sold in EU from 1 November 2014. So no great "gift" and it's the indirect system which is nowhere near as good as the proper direct system.
 
Sorry for not researching this properly before starting a new thread, I will be more diligent in the future.

Having said that, does anyone have a view on the mid term plans for the 8V? Typically when would we expect the first face lift or significant change? It's too late for me regardless as I've placed my order but I had a horrible feeling that Audi would announce a face lifted model just as mine rolled out of the factory. I normally do my research before buying but I kind of got wrapped up in the moment!

There's probably a thread out there already telling me all this, ARRRGHH, I've done it again.
 
A couple of years yet I should think, and even then it's likely to be just a minor cosmetic change.
 
I think you'd get plenty of notice for something like that, there'd be news articles about it and all that kind of thing.

Yer it's a shame they went down the ABS sensor route with it, you can enable it anyways with VDCS.
 
Has this been done yet, I thought there was an issue with switching it on via VDCS?
 
Hardly anyone does it any other way now do they? Just makes changing your tyre expensive the other way.

IIRC the A1 was released 2010 and is due a facelift at the end of 2014. I see the ads for the new Polo have started. So the new A1 can't be far behind. The new A3 was released at the end of 2012(?) so should be due a facelift at the end of 2016 or early 2017?

Does that a sound about right?

I'm not due a change until mid 2015 so I'll probably just wait for the facelift. Hope that some of the design elements from the new A4 might be included.

If A4 gets the new TFT binnacle like the new TT I could well see the A3 facelift getting it. But that would be a radical change which is not the Audi way.

VAG models work in 8/9 year life cycles so would expect the 8V coming to the end of its life around 2020 after being face lifted early 2016.

Not likely as I understand that the TT binnacle is for the "sports" models and not the family cars such as A4 and A3.

Do you not feel that judging whether today's car is right for you is more important than worrying what the next model may or may not have? Because by the time the new one arrives you'll then be worrying what the next one has et al. I remember having such a conversation with a friend some years ago about computers, he didn't want to buy one then because he was worried that the next model would be better and cheaper! I told him that if he followed that philosophy he would never buy one.

Yes, but there's a difference between that and knowing that the next one is only coming out soon. When I got my A3, the facelift would have been 3-4 years away, but if it's only a few months away then it'll be worth waiting for.

I also hope that all the models will get the same instrument cluster as the new TT. I've not seen anything about it being for sports models, and it seems like the logical thing to do anyway. It's not that radical a change given what changed for the 8V (and in fact the TT!). Perhaps not for the facelift but for the next A3 I would have thought they would do something similar if it works out well in the TT.

As a TT owner I have followed the impending launch of Mk3 closely and read somewhere that the Audi Virtual Cockpit (with sat nav etc in front of the driver) is definitely only for sports models and will not be introduced on the cooking models. So probably TT, R8 and Lamborghini Huracan. Don't hold your breath for A4, A3 etc! Actually when you see it you realise that it is not a great design for a car where passengers want to adjust SatNav, music etc. It is only the driver who has control which is OK for a driver focused sports car but not for a family model.

Hmmm... slight difference. I have 4 computers - a work laptop and desktop, and a personal laptop and desktop. They have all been upgraded with SSD HDs or SSHDs. They all 'just work'! I'm waiting for skylake and to see what difference the new 'mantle' API will make.

I have been pondering why the 184ps FWD is a higher insurance group than the 184ps Quattro...

Have your heard the Stewart Francis joke... why is that Frisbee getting bigger? Then it hit me!

It is not because the Quattro is inherently safer (it isn't). It is because the FWD car has a bigger power to weight ratio.

Some say the heavier Quattro handles better - just as some think the extra weight of the diesel handles better than the petrol. It's all subjective. I just watched the A1 Quattro video on youtube. The lighter, less powerful cars were faster. Though it was on a track - which is different than the real world.

Audi has only just released my ideal car... Saloon A3 Sport 184ps FWD manual (delete sport suspension). Comfort + economy + power.

I can afford to change now. I'm waiting to change because my current car exceeds all my needs (except comfort).

Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke, here is Autocar this time, testing the Leon Cupra vs Golf R.





The interesting thing about this in-depth back to back test, is, considering both cars are MQB, how much difference there is in the steering/handling and front end feel.

It does make you wonder if there is a similar difference in front-end feel between the Golf R and S3.

The first facelift on the previous 8P model was a total mess.

The car was launched in 2003 in 3-door form then the Sportback arrived roughly a year later with a different nose, immediately making the 3-door look a bit out of date. The 3-door was then updated another year or so later, so anyone who bought a new one in 2003 found their car looking out of date only two years later.

I think this time round they're releasing the models in a much more organised fashion and thus it'll be longer before any facelift arrives. Especially when models like the cabrio and saloon haven't been out that long, to facelift the car in the next year or so would annoy a lot of people! It's always a balancing act between updating the car to look fresh but not annoying existing buyers, as with a lot of products (just look at Apple and the stick they got when the iPad 4 arrived just seven months after the 3).

I think it'll be 2016 before we see a significant facelift of the A3, although there might be a few minor tweaks before then.

Yet the iPad 3/4 was annoying and something no one predicted really.

Be interesting to what they do about iOS in the car and Android Auto, hopefully just software updates.
 
The 1.6 TDI is getting 5 extra horses and the 1.4 CoD (Call of Duty :p) is getting an extra 10.

Some cars also seem to be getting slighty better economy stats.

These changes were effective for MY15 cars from BW22 (26 May).
 
I do wonder why they added extra horse power at this stage. Instead of increasing the power at the mid-range refresh.
 
In the case of the 1.4 it's probably more about the reduction in emissions as it's a band lower which is important for company car drivers, a key market.
 
For the MY15, the S3 also gets a 4kw power increase, from 206kw to 210kw.... no 221kw for us down under, at least the torque figures didn't drop.
 
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but though it would be better than starting a new one.

Anyway just out of interest, with the A1 facelift being announced with some updated engines, when does everyone think the A3 will get any updates to the engine? The 1.6 tdi for example has been updated to 116ps and supposedly 80mpg and lower CO2.

Im thinking May 2015 sounds like a logical time of year based on the last change, ready for September?
