When I bought my car, it had the factory cradle on the dash and an iPhone 3 adaptor, it worked great with the iPhone 3 and later iPhone 4, but only when the phones were not in a case.
I got fed up with popping the phones in and out of their case every time I wanted to stick in the cradle and when I got my iPhone 5, I gave up on the idea of the cradle as it was going to take Audi months to come up with a new adaptor. So I removed the adaptor and screwed a Brodit adaptor to the cradle.
This has worked just fine for a couple of years but just looks ugly so this week I removed the factory cradle and have just bought a replacement centre console on eBay that I'll be fitting so I'll no longer have the nasty holes in my dash.
