hi guys

well i sold my avant about 6 weeks ago to a very nice guy from wales, it was a standard 2.0tdi se and i just loved it.

so i completely modid it out and i mean i done everything

anyway the guy phoned me last week and asked a couple of question about the car,so i told him i wished i had not sold it and was missing it like mad

he said that he might be getting rid because something had happened at work and he would give me first refusal

i believe i sold it to cheap in the first place

but anyway i got a messagew the other day to say the oilpump had gone and the repair was going to cost around £2000

i am really gutted for him but at the same time relieved i did,nt get it back

my issue is that i really loved the b7 but am a bit weary now of buying one

i would appriciate any advice

All makes have their problems e.g. BMW have cam chain problems. Jury is still out whether the oil pump shaft issues hamper B8 models. I suspect they fixed it on 2010 cars. Why not go for an A3 sportback?

Find a 1.9tdi B7, get a stage 1 remap to 140-150bhp and you have a great car with great mpg, enough poke and a practically bullet proof engine.
I just bought my second one at the weekend and even without the remap they're not as slow as people make out, you'll find the folk that dish them have probably never even driven one!!
Prices are rising tho as more people are hearing about the 2.0 tdi issues, see if you can find one for a test drive and see what you think. Or if you'd prefer/need more poke try the V6tdi's

You can solve the problem with balance shaft delete,or remanufactured balance shaft pump and a good oil pressure gauge and your done.

Bloke at work told me hes just bought an A4 57 plate 2.0tdi, I said did you do any research on the net? he said no, next day he said to me Im not speaking to you in the mornings anymore!
Whatever make you buy google the **** out of it ie engine problems, egr, turbos, gearboxes etc etc, its boring but very useful.
Now people say that only the bad views on cars get put on the web, but as we all know to most people a car is a just a car and they treat it as such not serviced at all or on time and you will most likely be buying that car, so the bad reviews are relevant.

You're 100% right, of course, but people also need to keep some sense of perspective when conducting their research, otherwise they will end up buying nothing at all, because every car in the world has a design fault of one sort or another. The most important thing is to do your homework, gen right up, and whichever fault-prone disaster you decide to buy, never spend all of your available budget on buying it. Always keep back £1,000 or so, just in case.

And if that means you can't afford the shiny beast you want, compromise and look for something a little more modest.

get the 3 litre ans engine not the 3.2 higher tax only niggle is the coil pack lol but first time I have trouble with them cam belt change a bit step though not the S4 or RS4 but not bad and my car is 8 years old

Everything is relative and I still believe that no matter whether it's petrol or diesel you'll find hassle or history of unhappy owners! If I believed everthing I googled on BGB 2,0t engines I would have slung mine 2 years ago!.....I must say though that I am still not convinced that I will ever have enough courage to buy a diesel again....especially a modern engined one.....just far too complicated for their own good. Since I switched to petrol my local garage dude's are very lonely....Research is good, but sometimes gut feeling, plenty of service history and a sweet sounding engine,good long test drive and a VAG diagnostic check before purchasing is worth the punt.

Not driven a 1.9 for many many years, wife has a 3.0tdi pretty good car.
From what I could find out not to much goes wrong, injectors, manifold flaps and er thats it I think, goes pretty well to!
Best mpg in slow traffic m25 53mpg, average to work and back 38mpg which is a mix of town and fast a roads.
Once up to temperature very rare to see it under 30 mpg for local work
Wife does some longish trip back home 130 miles each way, 75/80 mph all the way 47/8 mpg, cant really argue with that.

And the BUL engine of the 2.0T B7 A4 Special edition (same as DTM) is also a strong engine. another consideration

Nope quattro and proper auto slush box, I was to be honest amazed how good the mpg is.
I dont often drive it as I like my beer so she chauffers me around!
When I do drive it Im always amazed how smooth it is, the gearbox is just lovely, engine is pretty impressive, she told me off for racing a fiesta st the other day, pretty evenly matched up to 90 ish until she *****ed at me!
Quick google fiesta st 180 bhp, light car 2wd, audi only 24bhp more, way heavier and 4wd.
Im sure someone on here stuck a pic up of their 3.0tdi dash up showing 58mpg, Iirc slow heavy traffic ie 40/50mph for miles

Quite often comes up on here ref the 2.0t with very poor mpg if used in town.

i think i was having the same thoughts as you buy it back cheap enough and have it repaired :think:

mate i think i sold it way to cheap going by what i,m looking at with the same sort of spec to replace i t
