hi guys going to be changing my timing belt soon so need to order oneive read through numerous threads but cant find a definitive answer....i have a r plate 1998 1.8 turbo which i assume is the agu,the car had the belt done at 60k but its now on 127k and i need to do it..what kit should i get (great if someone could post a link etc....) and ive read about some tensioner that most dont replace but can fail? is this included in kits?

thanks

marc.

your help will be greatly appreciated.

really if your replacing the cambelt, you want to replace the tentioner as a matter of course, and it would make sense to replace the water pump, try unipart, they offer a complete kit, im sure someone else will be along shortly to give you a link to kits

ok mate, thanks.there's a unipart a mile up the road from me.

Don't think I would trust unipart on something as important as a timing belt kit.

Contitech kits from Euro Car Parts are top quality, SKF is good too.

There were 2 types of tensioner fitted, they were either hydraulic or friction damped. It's the hydraulic dampened unit that is often not included in the kits.

Contitech do a kit with it in if yours is hydraulic.

Get the contitech kit from Euro Car Parts with the tensioner, i believe they are OE and whats fitted as standard.

I can 2nd Europarts Contitech kit - it's what I always fit. I'd try the dealer for a genuine water pump, surprisingly reasonable on price usually. They'll want the old one back to get your surcharge back but there's no time limit on it - I bought mine way in advance of fitting it and gave them the old one back nearly a year later and got the money back ok.

genuine cambelt kit and waterpump for the AGU is just under £100 with VAT from TPS.

Got my kit from gsf too, good price, cheaper than another engine, was over due by a year :ermm: think I paid about 80quid including water pump with steel impeller.

You wouldent be able to see it though? Unless you run the risk of having no covers protecting it.

right just tried eurocarparts it list 4 kits 2 being skf and the other 2 are unbranded?

found this on ebay?

TIMING/CAM BELT KIT & WATER PUMP AUDI A3 1.8 T [AGU Engine Code] 96- | eBay

SKF kit is good. Their kit includes their own brand tensioner and idle roller and they buy in the belts in from Gates, the largest automotive belt manufacturer in the world and they make the OE belts for VW / Audi.

Every bit as good as the Contitech kits, and a good price too for the kit with the hydro damper.

Right, on the subject... I saw a mk4 golf with a blue cambelt, looked pretty cool and seeing as all my hoses/etc are blue thought it could be a good shout.

Anyone know who does these?

Its a Gates belt... made from kevlar and cost a small fortune... there have been reports of them snapping recently... personally I just use an OE belt... not convinced the Gates belt is that much better for the money

euros i find are a bit mix matched on parts and are more often than not made from cheap chinese chocolate metal, especially down my way, tend to go through unipart for main dealer parts, discounted rates too but thats just my opinion, euro down here do suffer bad press
