Hi guys, I just wanted your opinions on something which has been bugging me.

I have a 2000 B5 TQS which is stock apart from coilovers, my friend has a B6 TQS with the 190ps engine with the 6 speed box, again stock apart from coilovers.

Out of interest we decided to pit them against each other at an air strip near where we live just to see what would happen and given the relative weight/power differences between the two chassis I would have thought they should near enough be nose to nose, or the B5 be further if anything.

Initially I had the advantage and managed to pull out a significant lead, however he overtook me like I wasn't even moving once I got to 5th gear despite my foot being glued to the floor, so naturally I thought something must be wrong.

Both cars were scanned with VCDS, neither displayed any faults and both run perfectly under normal driving conditions, so my question is, am I just being stupid thinking that my B5 should be at least as quick as the B6 if not quicker, or could there be something I'm not picking up on? it boosts fine, MAF is fine, coolant temp sensor reads correctly and yet I'm feeling like a snail!

Does the B6 have a K03s? I'm not sure If I have a K03 or a 3s

There's loads of possibilities as to why what happened happened.

What's the mileage of your car compared to his? A tired engine may not produce as much horsepower as it should.

Also gearing? His 6 speed box may have given him an advantage once you hit 5th.

Aerodynamics? They play a significant part once over 100mph.

You should have the K03 in yours and I think his should be the K03s. Higher up the revs your turbo would probably run out of puff quicker than his.

I'm no expert but that's just a few ideas for you.

I am pretty sure your mate b6 quattro is mapped, on paper the 1.8Tqs should be faster and handle better if both are stock- it's all about power to weight ratios and the b6 has a lardy *** !

Hmm, Given he only passed you once you got to 5th, i'd imagine its probably down to the fact that your intake temps were up thru the roof and you werent producing 180hp any more. If you were running 95 octane fuel then this would have made matters worse.

He has slightly more power, but a more efficient turbo (its larger) and two intercoolers, so will have maintained lower temps and thus kept the power up for a longer period of time.

At those sorts of speeds, power is all. Power-to-weight ratio goes out the window, as the aero drag is so high that the only thing that matters is how much power the car has left once its overcome the drag to continue accelerating. The Aero drag on both cars will have been pretty similar, and at that point his very slight power advantage starts to be come more significant. If your ECU was pulling boost and timing due to temps then that would exacerbate the issue further.

If his car WAS mapped, he'd have blown you into the weeds off the first few gears, not at the top end.

I think this pretty much covers it.

I don't think that mine qts would stay anywhere near a b6tqs tbh. Mine is only marginally quicker than a b6 1.9tdi 2wd. I've always felt that the car is slow but put that down to it's weight and 4wd system.
