I'm looking to get a 3.0 tdi a4 b8. Then I want to tune it to somewhere near 350bhp. Just wondering which gearbox would be stronger manual or auto? I suspect the car to be running over 700nm when tuned

Manual gearbox if you find one, the auto will give more troubles than it's worth... Only issue is getting 700Nm of torque on the road without clutch slip is a bit tricky, you will need a Sachs SRE clutch and SMF as the stock one will be on it's limits ! What clutch and injectors will you be using ? Stock fuel injection will struggle to fuel enough fuel for 350Bhp without a long duration which means high EGT and possible high smoke levels as the fuel won't have time to burn properly...

Still at the planning stage at the moment I heard the manual box was good for 800nm?? But wasn't so sure about that. Was hoping not to change the injectors I've been looking at going down the darkside developments route with doing the turbo the dpf delete and the inter cooler I'm not going to be chasing numbers as such but was hoping for above 330bhp. Again I was hoping not to go down the smf route but might need to if the standard clutch is not going to take the torque

Check Sachs SRE website, they do multi plate clutch racing kits for years, however you need to speak with them about your requirements...

Chris the B8 3.0 TDI has a twin plate 228mm clutch and is good for 800Nm plus, there is as far as I know no upgraded clutch option available. some of the europeans have managed to get 400bhp and 850Nm but at 850Nm the clutch was slipping.
To get that power he was running a hybrid turbo , very large intercooler, water /meth, serious remap, 3 inch full exhaust including 3 inch downpipe, extra fuel pump and a few other small tweaks.
Fuelling limitations with the standard injectors/ pump mean that 400 bhp is about the max without spending a lot of money.
You can make the standard car pretty quick with a remap, intercooler some exhaust tweaks mine is running around 320bhp and 715Nm of torque.
As for the gearbox i only ever looked for a manual. Never owned an auto, They don't handle the torque as well, I don't think they can take the same torque as the manual box, and even if they could I am not sure they would be as reliable.

You could re-line the clutch friction material with ferametalic linings or even upgrade to organic linings if you're not sold on sintered/puk style grabby clutches ! If you guys need upgraded clutches then let me know, i have a few contacts in the trade that could build you custom bits...

My tiptronic is handling similar torque to desertstorms without any problems whatsoever. They are good for 750Nm though.
I'd have preferred a manual though, but they're not available in South Africa. For some reason the only manual Quattro B8's are a few 2.0T and the S4.
So had to choose between tiptronic and s-tronic. If you're going to do performance mods, then stay away from the s-tronic as they will not handle the torque.

The tiptronics do require maintenance though at around 150,000km (93,000 mi) in terms of an oil flush and filter change(US$300-400), and while that's being doing you might also want to look at getting the valve body updated with fresh solenoids(US$750), and maybe even look at uprating the torque converter (US$425).
