Can anybody advise me on this, please?

When my coolant mixed with the oil in the engine, the mechanic said "its the head gasket".

The head was skimmed and reassembled with head kit and new timing belt kit. 1000 euros. bad enough at that.

When he rebuilt it, he tells me that it is still leaking so the head/block must be cracked.
THATS 1000 YOYOS DOWN THE TUBES.

Was there a compression test or diagnostic that should have been performed before committing to a full head repair ?

Yeh,any genuine garage, even if they would see oik in the water, should of still checked the head for any damage. Let's just say I would be goin on of me head about that.
Also have you been show this crack?

surely when the head was skimmed, it should have been pressure tested as good practice.
when i used to take my heads to be skimmed they always pressure tested them for me?

While the head was off it should have been pressure tested this would have shown up any issues with the head. If the problem is in the block you wouldn't have found that but It would be unlikely that that was the issue as I have never heard of that scenario with a 1.9 TDI.
The heads can crack and some of the earlier 1.9 TDI's had poor head castings which were porous..

Sounds like a lot of money just to remove a head skim it and replace the gasket.

Karl.

Do the 1.9 PD's have an oil cooler cooled by the engine coolant, they've been known to leak across..

I specifically said that to the mechanic but he persisted that it was the hg.
In the original failure there was no oil contamination in the coolant tank if that is any indication.
Apparently, it is now leaking out whilst cold. I smell bs in the mechanic's story but hard to pin it down. for all I know, there's swarf under the gasket or he did not diagnose it correctly.
Here's a good one, the original first symptom was a water leak from what looked like a rubber mushroom on the side of the engine.
The mechanic simply plugged it and that is when the original water/oil contamination occurred. Any idea what that mushroom was?

was going to say the oil/water cooler these are prone to failure and some of the horror of head gasket repairs stories on the net, the garage mechanic has also some responabilty towards your cost he advised you what the repair was and this has not solved the issue is his advice is wrong he should have a least the decency to to compensate you

if its the oil water cooler you can replace or get rid of it I plan to do this in the near future you may need to space the oil filter or slightly away from the block if so look at speedflow.co.uk ( 01934 864 310 ) ask to speak to fay Good lass ask her for a MIH performance TV 60 this is a through block oil filter mounting you can use to space the oil filter away from the engine block if need be then just bridge the 2 water hoses with a cooper insert and clips for a water tight seal and away you go

I used the same block to put the senders for an oil pressure and oil temp gauge in my a4 bit of a nightmare job but well worth it it the end the tv 60 is made from a solid block of alumiumium and is about £45 but is worth every penny it is not for an oil cooler

Thanks Easy, my original suspicion was that the oil cooler was disturbed when the oil filter was replaced. The mechanic said that the filter does not connect onto the cooler. Would this be true or not? the car is a 2002 A4 TDi 130BHP

I would have first had the coolant sniff tested for exhaust gasses, might be worth doing this now just to be sure

Oil coolers don't mix water and oil In the engine but they will let oil mix with coolant in the tank. In the OP case it's most likely a craked head or block...

That's the ****tiest presentation of a completely useless product on a diesel engine ! I know what that chap should use the aparatus for- it looks like a phallus !

lol, i know but it gives the OP a basic idea/answer to his question.

A diesel with a cracked head will not necessarily overheat and the oil does not gets any CO2 from the combustion chamber. If the car would overheat in such a way that hydrocarbons are present into the cooling system then you will see the bubbles in the coolant tank- you don't need a phallus to remind you ! That test is inconclusive on a diesel engine, only good way to tell is by stripping, cleaning and carefully inspecting the head and block...

I think your missing the point here, I never said if it would work or not, I just try'd to show a quick clip answering his question.

John_Tuohy,
What does that entail?

Hi yer John

As to your question I would suspect that possibly the sealing ring was disturbed ???? in front or behind the oil water cooler but that would have left a lot of oil around that area on the engine tray below the oil water cooler but the mechanic should only have unscrewed the filter and the new filter would have a new sealing rubber ring as I have read out there the oil water cooler is made of very thin material and failure is not uncommon have you googled it yet

And yes you screw the filter on to a extension screw thread the comes out off the oil water cooler no it doesn't touch it because the oil filter sealing ring stops it but I think the gap must around half a millimeter

John my thing is car stereo's I'am starting to get out of my depth here and I'am sure there is many more qualified people on here than me who can give you a more in depth advice, but I would find a good Audi independent or a garage that guaranties its work if your close to London talk to Steve at Russell Automotive 0208 200 0995 he is the only garage I would use, I wouldn't let anyone else touch my Audi if you haven't got that option use a garage that takes either visa card ( sale of goods act ) or even better a credit card ( the consumer credit act of 1972 ) in either case you have recourse to your card issuer via a charge back let them do the hard work for you

I wish I could be more help John don't want to give the wrong advise best of luck mate

Thanks Easy and the others. Your help much appreciated.
Taking the pain and getting a used engine for 500 euros.

just a 10p add,

is the car an Automatic or Manual Gear box set up? why do i ask, Ive had the auto box ATF mix with the coolant in the cars radiator, which in turn created an over heat of the cars engine and caused a crack in the head gasket and warped the head, all that was on a 130bhp VW Passat 1.9TDI PD engine.
