Air con- Compressor goosed

Had my air con looked at today due to no cold air.
Plenty of gas apparently but compressor is dead.
The tech showed me the static bolt as the pulley turned and explained that a new unit as well as a total system flush and other new bits and bobs would be needed, due to metal fragments, being sucked through the system, all for the princely sum of £900!!
He said he wouldn't bother, considering it's a 2005 and the value of the car.
He's got a point but I can't bear being in a hot car with leather seats during one of the rare heat waves we get lol.
Anyone else had this problem and what did it cost you to fix?
 
I seriously wouldnt bother lets be honest, its not gonna be soooo hot that putting the windows down wont do the trick
 
I had a goosed compressor and just got a sourced one from a scrappie. £75 and another £50 for a recharge.
 
If it were me, I'd get it repaired, although like Wrath said, try to source a used part rather than a new one. If you're planning to keep the car in the medium term, you're gong to want it working. And if you're not planning to keep it, it'll be an unattractive proposition to potential buyers if the air con isn't working.
That figure of £900, is that Audi dealer prices, or independent garage prices?
 
Ive said to the wife many times to get things fixed, she always said why I dont need it?, Ive always replied yes but a buyer will want to see it working so why not fix it now and you get to use it rather than fix it just to sell it.
I would say second hand pump, get it fitted then slide off to quick fit/ats etc for one of their cheap regas jobs, dont mention new pump etc then see how it goes.
2005 car has still got a value even if its done big miles
 
I had the air con on my 2005 avant sorted last year, cost me about 220 quid for compressor and pressure sensor. my dad managed to get me the compressor for trade price and gassed it for me foc. Audi had previously quoted 700quid for the same job.
 
The old aircon is handy when it's wet and cold too....not just for Summer. It does clear the moisture out of your cabin when it's working and stops the windaes misting up. There is company in the Northeast of England where I bought my compressor for my Zafira and their prices and service was really good.....think they are on ebay.

I'm a air conditioning engineer but don't deal much with car a/c but £900 is a total joke source one yourself gas recharge can be found £35
 
I would get it fixed as you would want this if you ever came to sell it
 
Get it fixed i say!
The a4 climate control on auto was great on the avant!
Plus easier to sell later on if functional!
The key to healthy air con is never turn it off! (for future reference) there designed to be always on!
Start turning off, bacteria builds up and drains block up and the clutch plays up!

and don't use that econ button, it bypasses the air on leading to an econ button that cant be switched off!

I keep mine on all the time in my A4 cabriolet , keep it all working and clean , I do keep up regular checks but I suppose it's easy as it's bread and butter as it's my job !
 
Wife has always ran with hers on all the time no matter what car she had
Me I would be chuffed if mine had a/c
 
I managed to Part ex my old 2.0TDI avant with air con not working and EML on lol.

Audi Teesside charged Audi Uk £860 to replace my Compressor (first time it failed under warranty five years back ).
 
Well it's been pretty hot recently, but nice and breezy. I went away in the car camping this weakend and didn't miss the A/C that much but agree that if it rained it would be a different story.
Also agree with the selling on factor. I'm thinking of getting a reconditioned compressor, but what about the other parts that could have been affected if the metal fragments have been sucked through the system?
 
Change the dryer as well as that will filter any crap out, so hopefully caught any bits
On the trucks at work when a compressor blows, its gets a new compressor a vac down and regassed and thats it.
My daily land rover doesnt have a/c its a dark colour I hate the sun its a ****ing nightmare, get in the really old one its a light colour much better
