S5 DSG gearbox redline?

Apologise is this is a daft question but i have the audi s5 with the s tronic gearbox. Earlier on i had just given it a wash and wanted to show my brother the sound of the engine when parked up. So i put the car into park and revved the engine. I was supprised that it only rev'd to 4000rpm and wouldnt go higher, i tryed it in neutral aswell and the same outcome.

Why is this? And is there anyway to redline the car when parked?

I have googled it but can't find anything,

Think it's an inbuilt safety feature to limit engine damage and risk of over-revving. Seen it on a few Audi's recently.
 
Hmmm, so should it rev to the redline when stationary?
 
Not sure off the top of my head, but I suppose the question is would you want to? It's probably not going to do it any favours TBH.
 
I would just like to hear the v8 roar at 6000 rmp when its stationary! I'm supprised it doesnt let you. I wouldnt want it to redline when driving but i think it should when stationary!
 
If there wasn't a risk it might damage the engine then Audi wouldn't have set the limit. I suppose the risk is people start the car and start revving the **** off it when it's cold. It may also be linked to launch control system???
 
Whats launch control then mate? Sounds like a spaceship!!
 
Actually I've just noted your car is pre-2010 so may not have this.

1. Turn off traction conrtol (ASR).
2. Move shifter to D/S or chose Dynamic with your Drive Select

3. Step on brake hard with left foot for atleast 1 second.

4. Step on the gas all the way and hold it til the engine rev stop increasing.

5. Let go of brake within 5 seconds.

Ah mine doesnt have that. Sounds like a pretty decent feature though!
 
As above, some kind of inbuilt safety feature I've seen on a few VAG cars. The Veyron's limit is only 3k when stationary iirc!
 
Oh okay, thats abit anoying. But thanks for the info! My old manual s5 used to bounce of the rev limiter stationary. Mind you, that was a 2007
 
My 2008 S5 manual will only rev to 3.5k in neutral but with foot on clutch will rev higher
 
To turn of the 4k limiter (petrol) 2.5k (diesel) you need to simply hold down your ESP button for 6 seconds to disable ESP/TCS, after that you'll be able to rev it whilst at stand still in neutral. Be warned though! Don't damage your engine, it's there for a reason.

Thanks for that. I have held the ESP button off though and it still only revs to 4k. Any other ideas mate?
 
if u do want to rev to 6000rpm put the car in 1st gear and hold the clutch down, then it should allow you to rev more. Thats the same with mine.
 
audi upgrades
Reciprocal weight strain on the engine internals whist there is no load on the crank damages engine components. It also allows the engine to over-rev because there is no load. The limiter is there to stop people over revving the engine and throwing a rod, I've seen it happen. It's also there on diesels to cheat particulate regulations during MOT tests preventing the dumping of fuel at idle.
