Well it had to be done, the S3 fuel bills are starting to grow a little too much and even though I love the car to bits it has to go.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So I`ve put a dep on a new 04 plate 20.TDI Sline DSG in Mauritius Blue with a few toys onboard to keep me occupied.

Hopefully the finance will get sorted this week and I`ll be driving it asap.

I cant wait...

I'm changing mine too and have 2 cars in mind which i'm stumped between.

05' plate 2.0 TDi S-Line DSG for £21,495 including:

- Bose
- Xenons
- Cruise Control
- Symphony II
- Parking Sensors
- Heated Seats
- Arm Rest

55' plate 2.0 TDi Quattro S-Line for £20,800 including:

- Cruise Control
- Symphony II
- Bose
- Phone Prep.
- Folding Mirrors
- Vienna leather interior
- Arm Rest

I'm currently in negotiations about the price of the '05 plate because the '55 plate is about £27k worth of car and is cheaper??? I also need to find out if the '05 plate is the upgraded front grill.

I own a DSG and I wish I'd gone for the quattro.

Really? What don't you like about it?...

50/50 choice and I went the wrong way...

Ach well.

Did you REALLY just ask that question... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

I know the Quattro is more appealing because of the price and that it is expensive to buy from new but.....

- i'm not bothered particularly about leather or the phone prep on the '55 plate cos i'll get part leather anyway and i'll be transferring my Sat Nav+ ( & Bluetooth) unit accross

They are also upgrading the front grill for me as both currently have the old one. They are sending it to a specialist company - they cant change the bumper due to the headlamp washers but they can fit the single grill surround.

Still a tough call!!

thats interesting about changing to the single frame grill,i didnt think it was possible,by keeping the old bonnet, lights etc,

can you keep us posted on how they managed to do it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

I am actually leaning towards the optional equipment side of things rather than DSG Vs. Quattro.

They told me the cost of ripping off the front grill of the car and replacing it with the new updated one piece grill was gonna be £800. I've seen some photos of some previous work and they look spot on.

It is being done under Audi's guarantee that it will be perfect - if not they can take it back off again.
I'm not paying for it directly - they offered me 2 years free servicing & roadside assistance so i said I'll take just 1 service & 12 months road tax and payment for the grill.

I guess only the long run will determine if i chose wisely.

which options are you after then, seems like a total no brainer to me, even without the xenons and heated seats I still think the quattro is a better car?

Can't be the parking sensors surely? YOU CAN'T BUY A CAR BECAUSE OF PARKING SENSORS!!!

[ QUOTE ]
You'll use the DSG all the time, you'll use the quattro 4-5 times a year.

[/ QUOTE ]

Then that would just be a waste......

Putting the power down out of every corner, and being able to use all of it due to the superior traction, through all four wheels, every time. The confidence it brings on the road every day (wet or dry), thats what does it for me.

Quattro is a very different car IMHO. All I can reccommend is you test drive both cars before deciding.

But then I've never driven a DSG....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The car's main use will be for clocking up motorway miles to accomodate a change in job location.

lol with the parking sensors - our lass loves them but the xenons and DSG may be the deal breaker.

About the upgraded front grill. I have had photos sent from Audi about how it will look. They obviously cant replace the entire bumper on the '05 plate cos of the washer jets. I think it looks very good. I dont know how to host the photos but i will send them via email to those interested.

Cheers guys

I live near a busy junction and you have to be quick to get across at peak times. In previous cars I always got wheel spin and could never really 'nip' through a gap as I had to feather the throtle, now I can flaw it and get across with no wheel spin.

I`m going for the DSG option, my cars spec is extremely close to what Mikeclark is
thinking of but just a little bit older and that little bit cheaper

04 plate S-Line DSG 2.0 TDI
27k
Mauritius Blue
Armrest
Bose Symphony II
Cruise Control
Luggage Pack
Lighting Pack
Dipping Rear Mirror
Folding Mirrors
Mud Flaps
Rear Spoiler
Xenons
GSM Phone Prep - not the bluetooth version ;-(
NO CUP HOLDER! ARRGGH anyone know if you can retrofit one with the Symphony II?

Finance should be going through today with any luck.

Going back to what people are talking about, I`d go for the DSG (Bowfer on standby)
rather than the quattro - just peronsal preference, also the DSG is incredibly
relaxing to drive and good for queuing traffic, etc... and then theres sport mode
and them there paddles.

In my opinion,if most of your driving is motorway based, then why bother with DSG ?

Again,in my opinion,DSG is geared (sic) towards a driving pattern based on constant gearchanging, which motorway driving is not.

I would say I'm the sort of driver DSG is aimed at.One who flits between slow moving traffic (when auto-mode is handy) and country road driving (when 'manual' mode is handy).

If you're just shoving it into top gear and cruising, then DSG just becomes a needless toy.

What? you mean its aimed at someone who loathes it with every inch of their being?

I think it was designed for my type of driving (someone who wants an auto, but only some of the time) and that's why I chose it.

As it is,it's 'foibles' have resulted in me growing to hate it.

Simple as that.

Well I agree with Bowfer on this one, my journey (30 miles) is 20 miles bendy roads, overtaking, ducking and diving and then 10 miles of crawl with lots of queuing traffic .

This suits the DSG perfectly. Plus I can also be lazy occasionally.

And it depends what motorway your on... M25 or M1 in places and DSG will come in really handy!!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif

dsg for me all the time, ill never use a manual again,
as for quattro i see the advantages, and agree with most of them, but as Eeef said earlier, for the amount of times it is realy genuinely used it i see no point in having it,just my opinion though.

Incidentally bowfer - some time ago there was a question about whether the DSG fitted to the Golf R32 behaved in the same way as it does when fitted to an A3. In particular does it change up automatically, even in manual mode, when maximum revs are reached in each gear.

I put this question on an R32 Forum and it appears that it does behave exactly the same as the A3.

Another thing to remember,in relation to motorway cruising,is that the manual cars are geared higher than DSG cars,so your car will use less revs for a given speed.

Interesting.

Were there any comments reflecting how they felt about that ?

Is the overall gearing different for the DSG and Manual? The economy figures for the DSG are slightly better than for the manual in the tech specs but only by about 1mpg.

I also agree with Bowfers statement, most of my daily commute is spent sat in traffic and the DSG is perfect for this as I can have some fun on my back road dash on the way to and from the motorway. It's good but not perfect but I would choose it again.

how can you compare DSG and quattro?

one makes your life easier, and the other can potentially save your life in a sticky situation. You may only need it 3-4 times a year, but if it saves your car or your life, then its got to be worth it!!

I dunno about the "save your life" comments (bit over-dramatic),but after the pretty spectacular snowfall we had this year, and having experienced how godawful the 2wd A3 S-line is in those conditions,I agree that quattro is worth it,even for 2-3 weeks a year.

Now that we've sold the wife's Honda 4x4,I will definitely have to consider quattro next,as the thought of us neither of us having the option of 4x4 is quite scary.

interesting and valid points guys. It does seem though that DSG owners stand loyal to their option as do quattro owners.

Anyone bought their motor with either or both and regret it?

For me its a very interesting bit of back and forth light debate listening to the +'s & -'s of both options.

As you should have gathered from my posts, and you should be able to see from my signature,I deeply regret choosing DSG.

I would regret the decision even if quattro weren't the other option.

Given that quattro is the other option,I regret it even more.

I'm not going to go into great detail, and hack-off those who love DSG more than I already have over the past year, but suffice to say it does things I didn't expect and don't like.

If you can, take a looooong test drive and see what you think.

Even a weekend wouldn't be long enough,in my opinion.

It took me a few weeks to go from "wow, this DSG is cool" to "hang on...it keeps doing this/that/the other" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'd have DSG and Quattro on the 2.0TDi if Audi would deign to make it, but the bummms won't, even for the new 170bhp TDi. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

I agree with bowfer as to the environment DSG is best suited for, which is basically where I live. However the country roads can get very slippery when the tractors have been out spreading mud everywhere, which is why I'd like the quattro as well.

I get a lot of opportunity to drive S3s (before and after tuning them) and they are certainly more useable than some of the hot 2WD versions, e.g. LCR. Which for me makes the case for fast 4WD cars every time.

No, I just stated how the A3 DSG behaved and asked if the R32 was the same and a couple of guys replied to say the R32 did behave in the same way.
