Hey all
Want to look into giving my rear lights a subtle tint to them to take off the brightness of the red plastic but still keep the glossy look.
Any ideas of prices (hoping around £20-30) or if its actually beat getting the film from somewhere and having a go myself?

Why would anyone want to compromise their life expectancy?

You're giving the driver behind only half the time to brake, by the time he/she realises they are BRAKE lights.

Hence why i said "light tint" dude... So my brake lights are actually lights :)
Dont like it when theyre too dark it looks cheap lol.. Saw few more modern cars where the rear lights are a bit tinted and not so bright red.

I used tint spray from eBay. I applied 3 coats and think mine are a bit too dark so I would watch how much you put on. It comes straight off if you want to put it back to standard though.

Sorry, I was looking at Bez's pic!:readit:

E-TECH LENS TINT / LIGHT TINTING SPRAY - SMOKE / BLACK 150ML | eBay

Apply coats lightly and then last coat make it heavy but not to the point it runs, by doing this you will get a glossy finish and it will match the gloss of the car

I like that level of tint but i don't think i trust myself getting an even layer of spray aha but for £5 a tin it seems the easiest on the pocket lol

Each to their own lol

Chris, got any pics?
I don't want it to have patches or accidentally put too much on lol only thing iv ever sprayed was my front grill plastidip and thats pretty forgiving.

Just remove the lights, clean and spray? And jet wash wont make it peel off?

Mines the white one above. I don't have any decent pics of the back.

Yea simple to remove the lights (one nut from inside the boot). Give them a proper clean up and then apply light coats. I never jet wash my car so I can't really comment on if a jet wash will make it peel.

Personally I think mine is too dark but I can't be bothered to redo it again.

my lights work perfect
lamin-x is used on most rally cars etc and 100% legal
also on audi with vcds you can adjust the level ov light on the rear if anyone were to crash into the back of my they must be ****ing blind to start with

When I was painting my car I just threw a drop of black in the lacquer and dusted over it 3/4 times.. Nice subtle tint.. Also did the same wit an ep civic last week.. Ill post pics in a minute

It's the way I tint all my lights as it only takes 2 mins to do and costs me nothin as I always have lacquer around and a drop of black haha

Is this with a proper spray gun where you mix the paint yourself?... Id only be able to get ready made cans :/

Lamin-x "subtle tint" is great stuff man i'd go with it, I bought the pre-cut sizes for the fronts/fogs (went light blue for the fogs though) and then a couple of sheets that I cut to size myself for the rears. Personally I noticed some drop in light output...but throw in a bulb upgrade from Trups and you're onto a winner!

Rears went from this, too plastic looking and bright for me:

To this, much more modern and mean looking:

I also think they bring the front up really well :)

They would work out more expensive than the spray on stuff but I like the fact that I know all lights will be identical shades and the fact you can remove it very easily if you want to.

I bought it through the American site Lamin-x Protective Films , postage wasn't too bad and you can get 10% discount on your first order using the code "10off" iirc!

I really like the look it gives, definitely one of my favorite cheaper mods that can really alter the overall look of the car.

Just buy some MY11's.

Yes they're not cheap, but they look miles better than the earlier lights.

True but i dont have that kind of money :( especially with summer coming up and wanting to go on holiday aha.

Might be a slow saving process but ultimately want rims and spoiler first aha since light tinting ain't too expensive it can be my payday mod for this month lol

Just looked on there bro, its actually not too expensive lol just gunna order 2 sheets big enough and cut to size i think lol some edgy reviews on the pre cut sizes. Think thats only like $25 before the code and shipping. Need to measure what i need first.

Yea for the rears you have to trim them yourself, measure it up carefully and just get what you need then. I was generous with what I ordered but that left me with enough for the fogs if I didn't like the light blue that I got with the pre-cuts. The pre-cuts are definitely not EXACTLY the correct size but i'm still very happy with the coverage, you'd have to look very closely to notice uncovered bits.

Application is pretty straight forward especially if your cutting to size because they can stretch, however one thing I would advise is that you cut in long, as straight as possible sections with a stanley blade. I was being too careful at the start so the edge of the Lamin-x is not nicely flush with the edge of the light but I guess we live and learn!! Also, don't worry at all about bubbles and hazing underneath the Lamin-x after it's on, try to eliminate as much as you can when applying it but any residual moisture WILL dry out, mine looked awful for a few days but it all goes eventually.

After cleaning I was presuming to spray a small amount of soapy water on, put lamin-x on, rub out any bubbles then use a hairdryer for the adhesion and finally just trace around the lights with a stanly blade.... Maybe give the edges a once over again with the hairdryer lol
I'll watch installation vids on youtube before attempting though.
