Started my allroad 2.5 TDI today and when i selected reverse it shifted in to gear really hard and then all of the modes PRNDS were highlighted in red and the car needed a lot of revs to move. I switched the engine off, and started it again immediately and everything was fine and was fine for the next 30 miles during my drive home and hasn't happened since.

What's going on?

Yeah, i know. Just trying to get some ideas as the only garage near to me with VCDS won't do a quick fault code read, you have to book the car in and they want £60 + VAT diagnostic fee.

Most likely water damage to the gearbox control unit or electronic issue causing the box to go to limp mode...

hmmm, ok the car only has 26k miles on it so that's a bit disappointing.

£60+ is VERY expensive. Look at vcds map, someone will be close to you.

I have seen many 200k cars looking like 50k cars, if folk believe in low mileage 10 years old diesel cars then that's their choice... As above, 60 quid + VAT is main dealer prices...

Did you do this whilst going forward then put it into reverse before the car had stopped properly? I've done it a couple of times before whilst doing a quick 3 point turn and the dash has gone all red but turned engine of for 30 secs then fine.
