Hi all

I have done a search and can not find the answer to my question.

My A4 has a westfilia towbar and dedicated electronics.

I have read on the dvla website that the instrument cluster must show a warning light when the trailers attached but mine does not? Everything works as it should but no extra light in the cluster when indicating?

I did not get the manual with the car so can not check in that and I can not see the outline of a light in the cluster.

Can anyone check there manual for me and or if they have experience of this?

Many Thanks Adam

Not quite the same, but my new A5 has the same type tow bar, not towed with it yet though, but our Q7 of the same age had the factory tow pack and that did have two little arrows like indicators lit up green on the dash when the electrics are connected, is it a big issue for you? Do towing electrics come into an MOT, obviously is useful in knowing if the trailer is still attached to the back of the car.

Don't think the OEM flashing light is required by law, it can be a visual or audible warning, mine gives a beep from a box in the boot to confirm trailer lights are flashing. I don't have dedicated audi electrics mind you so didn't expect the dash light to flash, in your case I would have thought it should though so it may be that it's been wired up wrongly.

I've seen it suggested elsewhere that when some models know they are towing the driving dynamics are changed, not sure of exact ins and outs but guessing maybe ESC, cooling, that sort of thing, in which case it would need the audi wiring loom to activate these settings.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't be too bothered about the dash light (they won't test that at mot) but I would be bothered about the potential benefits the car has to offer when towing not being activated.

Having said that mine does not have audi electrics and tows a heavy caravan just fine.

Sorry if this sounds like a bit of a witter, I don't know an awful lot about the witchcraft that goes on inside these ECUs, but would be interested to find out if there are benefits, particularly with regards cooling,as I would the consider upgrading my electrics.

PS just a thought, are you sure the electrics are audi? Mine has a westfalia bar as well so it doesn't automatically follow that you will

No not part of the MOT I don't think however it is required to take the B+E driving test hence the need to know how a B7 with dedicated/oem electrics should work before I book this stupid test!

Mine is not oem but the westfalia plug in type went with this due to wanting 13pin and the charging function rather than cutting into the rear light cluster.

Thanks for the replies so far

I think they only test the newer 13 pin socket and not the old school 7 pin set up.

Oh well beck to the towbar people tuesday as it should show two indicators with a 1 in the centre, not impressed at all!
