Got a Futura Yellow 2.8 V6 Passat last October / november with 76000 (ish) recorded miles. Went to book it in for 80k service as advised and mate in the service department advises me that my car had an 80000 service in 2001 imagine my suprise - according to dialogue the car had covered over 78k miles in 2001, so somehow between then and my ownership the Passat appeared to lose 2000 miles or more. From what I can tell the car has always belonged to the same family, it was stood up unused for a while. Maybe the clocks go back down if you dont use them often enough, or does maybe electircal faults or dampness thro being stood up cause this kind of thing?

The previous owner runs a reputable tuning business and owns a good forum, so I cant imagine anything untoward has happened, but does anyone else any experience of this - what did you do?

I cant see the clocks going backwards if u dont use the car for an extended period..... Haven't got the answers but reputable or not, he's in the right business to make adjustments - not saying he has definately done anything untoward with the clock, but anythings possible - Have you tried to contact the guy and see if he has the answers - you seem to know (of) him / her.

Yeah i agree with that but the strange thing is though i would not think it would be worth someones while to lose 2K off the clock maybe 20K??

It was 4 years since the car was serviced and when you bought it (am I missing something?) in that time it could have done a lot more than 2K.

Since posting this a couple of people have come forward to say they know the car and are aware of the story with the car. SO thanks guys +++

SO what to do now, speak to the previous owner or just hand over to the police?

Potentially both..... Start by contacting the receptionist again and if it's the same as you said previously, cant get no further, ask her to pass a message on and say that if you dont get to talk to the owner, you will consider legal procedings..... if u do get to talk to him, then ask him / her outright.... if he starts being nasty and awkward, calmly explain that you wanted to talk to him first in an attempt to sort out the confusion, if he is not prepared to do this, then you are considering legal procedings

Be mindful, that if he wants to sort it out (cash etc.), you currently have nothing in writing to explain this mystery and is this going to hinder yor attempts to sell the car in the future.......

Or depending on your nature and and your anger - go down the legal route without talking to him..

Well it turns out the Tuner sold the car to his Mum and she was the previous owner to me, so I cant prove a relationship between this 2nd rate tuner in desperate need for some staff and an accurate rolling road and the clocking offence, so I'm going to have to give up on this. Shame as it is, and people will still give over money to this crooked bunch of cowboys.

I cant name companies because it will most likely involve this thread being removed.

Mods - would this thread really get removed if shao_khan named & shamed the dodgy tuner?

Any one of us could unwittingly let this crook work on our car. Surely it's best that we know which places to avoid?

I cant name the tuner - because he is covered - he sold the car to a family member before I got the car. I cant imagine his mum had the ability to do this, but i cant prove the tuner did it, so naming and shaming is out of the question (I cant afford the legal battle), even if the car is one family from new in 1998.

Fair enough shao_khan.

I wonder if he ripped his own mum off? I suppose he must have done - why else would he have done it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/soap.gif
