Hello.

I've just bitten the bullet and traded in my much loved S3 for a new dolphin grey s-line 2.0 TDI with those 20 spoke 18in wheels you all hate! Got a good deal from Lancaster and very good service from Neil. (Now seems to be a good time to buy cars because of the high targets Audi has set for 06 sales and it's the end of the 1/4 and financial year).

Didn't want to lose the s3 but the fuel and insurance was getting too much and I was very impressed with the A3 diesel. I've got lots of good advice from this forum so thanks to everyone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you don't mind me asking, how much of a reduction did you get?

It's useful to know that now is a good time to get a decent discount. This time next year would be about the right time for me to swop mine.

I'm almost certain I'll swop for a 2.0T quattro, although I can't decide between 3 door or Sportback.

The missus won't let me drag out not having kids for too much longer, so my next car might have to be the five door. The car after that will probably have to be larger still - probably an A4. Is it sad that I've got my next 2 cars planned out?

Adamr, we managed to get almost 14% off the list price which for Audi is a pretty good discount I think.

Planning to get used to the car first before I go for any remap but I'm not sure my girlfriend will approve! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Any driving or general tips? I've not owned a diesel before.

Nah,you'll take to it like a duck to water,especially with the 2.0Tdi engine,which actualy behaves in a very petrol-like manner (albeit with a shorter rev range,obviously).

The only thing you may find odd is the fact that diesels take forever to warm up compared with a petrol.

My commute is only 4 miles,so the temp gauge barely moves off the bottom.

All my petrol cars were well into their 'normal' temp zone by then.

You wear a coat a lot more in a diesel,coz the heater takes bleeding ages because of this.

Get used to the smell on your hands and clothes at the pumps too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mind you,you'll be filling up a lot less,so there's always a bright side !

14pc is really, really good. They must be begging for customers. I got 10 and that was only thanks to Booster as my local god awful stealers Gilders (useless) Sheffield would only go to about 3.5

It was more than I was expecting. I think the dealer has 25% margin on the cars and the biggest discount they give is 20% if you're a VIP (Man Utd footballer). Doesn;t seem fair that the more cash you have the bigger discount you get. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Thanks for that cd8, 14% is an amazing discount off an Audi. This time next year I'll try my luck.

With reference to the 20% discount for United players, I take it you bought from Lancasters?

Sorry, I should have re-read your original post.

For everyone else not from Manchester, Lancaster Audi is no more than a 45 seconds drive from Old Trafford (provided that a few sets of traffic lights are on green).
 
The car is from Lancaster, Manchester, the one near Old Trafford and the service so far has been very good (although we haven't actually collected the car yet).

Hope they keep it up.

Do any of you Manchester based A3 owners take your cars there or do you all make the trip to Links in Macclesfield?
 
I used Smith Knight Fay at Bolton for the 1st service and I had no complaints.

I bought the car from SKF Bolton and they also sorted out, under warranty, a leaking air con drain pipe (drivers footwell was /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif wet through) and flaking laquer on an alloy. I found the service manager to be very good.

However, I intend to give Links in Macclesfield a try next time (5000 miles to go) after reading the very good reports on here.
 
I have used Lancaster Audi for warranty work (replacement fogs due to condensation) and they did an excellent job. I also recommend that if you ever need an a bodyshop you should make use of the BMW bodyshop just down the road from Lancaster Audi - again I have found their service excellent.
I have also used Smith Knight Fay in Stockport for warranty work as well and their service was pretty good too!

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but i`m thinking of going the same route as well but I think I want DSG as the only addition.

Can anyone tell me the main spec differences between the S3 and a TDI Sline? 04 onwards.

I know the seats are part leather (same in my S3), but they wont be electric or recaros?

The xenons? not sure here, some have them some dont, is this an option?

The quatrro will go (not too bothered about that)

Brakes - are they similar?

and suspension? isnt the sline 25mm and the s3 35mm?

I`m also v. interested in a revo if I feel it doesnt live upto my s3's overtaking style /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif i.e. AMD stage 1 style.

What is the torque on a std 140ps a3 tdi? in lb ft.?

And the mpg (the main reason for the move) 28/30 to 45-55?

Dik, my mate from up the street has a 2.0 s line dsg and he gets around an average of 35-40mpg.

quattro is definately one of those things you miss when you havent got it. I went from an S3 to a A4 cab and 80% of the time I didnt miss it, but when you do (ie snow etc) you REALLY miss it!

soon went back to an A3 3.2Q

That seems low for the 2.0 TDI?

According to the DIS, the lifetime average for my 2.0 FSI is 38.3mpg.

Surely the 2.0 TDI must average more like 45 - 50mpg?
 
audi upgrades
mines currently indicating 47.8 although most people feel the DIS over reads a little
 
My average is around the 48-50 mark but I do tend to wear shoes rather than boots when I'm driving !

Xenons are an option on the SLine and the seats are sports seats but not recaros or electric and you're right, only half leather. Climate control is standard as are 18in alloys and you get lots of s-line badges.

I was very impressed with the interior, at least as good as the S3 if not better and I'm hoping that 45mpg will make up for the lack of oomph, xenons, leather and quattro!

The engine does take ages to warm up (about 15-20 minutes) but the heater does not. By the time I have come out of the garage and onto the main road (about 2-3 minutes) it's blowing warm air. Another few minutes, and it's quite hot. I believe there is an additional heating element in there somewhere.

Does the A3 have a 'pre-heater' fitted as standard ? (a seperate wee motor that makes the heater work before the engine is warm)

I know the likes of the Honda Accord diesel does,but I didn't think the A3 did.
 
ive read somewhere,if you look under neath the car,just under where the drivers seat is,there's an element,i think its something to do with the fuel,but that gets very hot and acts as a pre heater for the interior,i believe?.
 
The item you are referring to is a fuel cooling element so it may well give off heat to the interior.

Also I found the following statement in the Elsawin manual...
"Vehicles with diesel engine are currently fitted with an additional air heater (if requested by Climatronic control unit -J255- operating and display unit, heat energy is added to air on exiting from heat exchanger of heating system/air conditioner unit)"
