Tyre of choice these days? any brand or type standing out?

Went for the Goodyear EfficientGrip 225/40 R18 W (92), Reinforced. Fuel EfficiencyC Wet Grip B Exterior Noise 70dB. £120 a pop. Lets see how we get on :)
 
Well ive had my Assy 2's on about a month now, I have really really booted or pushed it in the wet then just tonight, and I must say the roads seem damp and greasy as I went round a roundabout a bit quick and the back slid a little, so when I then gave it some in 2nd on the straight the n/s wheel span and traction was on and off :/ I was hoping it wouldnt have done that!

Anyone else had anything similar? I know the have a top rating for wet grip.

Shall test again in wet etc... as gonna need 2 more for back in a few months or so!

Any tyre can easily be made to slip in greasy conditions, more so than in the wet! but setting out to "give it some" is always going to result in wheelspin - the wife's 1.4 Polo will spin its 4 month old all-season tyres in greasy conditions if I go looking for the limit, and that thing doesn't have half the torque of a 150bhp TDi. Also don't forget, Summer tyres will never give their best below a certain ambient temperature - which most of the country is at the mo...

I can't fault the 4x Assy 2's I put on in September\October last year, but then I mostly try to drive according to the conditions & very rarely go looking for slip, as that's the quickest way to wear the edges of the tread blocks, which gives your initial bite in corners and on launches.

Yes I know you can make any car spin, my comments were because tonight was the first time I had really driven abnormally since I had them fitted, so was a little dissappointed it didnt grip as I hoped. When I said...give it some...I meant pull away quickly in second gear.

I guess I shall forever be looking for the grip I had with the 4x4 Cosworth and 2 x A3 Quattros!

I dont recall the Bora spinning what so ever though after I had the GSD 3's fitted and that was mapped so extreme amount of torque.

Hi all!

So about a year later, and I need two more tyres.

The Assy 2's have done about 10k miles and still looking like new, the Conti 3's on the back are even closer to the limit than a year ago, were an advise on the MOT and I have a Santa Pod trip and airport run coming up so want to get two new tyres asap!

Dilemma is, do I get two more Assy 2's and have same all round, or try something else?!

Whilst im happy with the general grip and wear of the Assy's, I have noticed in the wet they do spin from time to time, and not exactly driving silly :/

Other options could be Uniroyal Rainsport 3, Dunlop Sport Maxx, Conti 5, all about the same kinda price, A rate for wet driving and C for fuel.

Any thoughts or new ones that have since come out?!

I had the PS3 for 39k km, which was a very good tyre but my new PSS 225/40x18 92Y are awesome. Compared to my old, most noticeable is steering feel and sharpness (almost like a cart), car feels softer and although on paper both have 71db noise the PSS are less loud. Extremely satisfied. Highly recommended!

totally agree.
I had Continentals on mine from new but they were noisy and had poor grip in wet and greasy conditions. Used to feel the back squirm when accelerating out of corners.
The PS3's have been brilliant this mild wet winter. Couldnt have asked for better tyres for the conditions. They also needed significantly less balnce weights when fitted. Maybe another indication of how well they are made.

Dont trust them with anything.

Go to a good reputable tyre fitters and prior to getting the tyres fitted show them your wheels and the condition they are in and then politely tell them that they should be in the same condition after tyre fitting. Pointing out the ****** obvious i know but they do seem to be more careful when your are on their case.

Where did you get them from in the 92Y fitment? e.g website?

I need to replace my PS3s with these but can't seem to find them in the UK yet in XL

I bought them in Athens, Greece discounted for 600 euro. I was waiting for a long time and finally got them 2 weeks ago.
To my surprise they are made in USA!

Was £12 for postage, so £81 each delivered in effect. Still cheaper than I could find elsewhere, even at £10 each fitting that's £365 for a full set fitted. Sidewall isn't so stiff just thumbing them, so the 94Y would probably be a good option for some people looking for that particularly.

The 94 Y XL would of been better.
 
I didn't know you did these tyres! Have liked you on Facebook for future reference.

I'm personally not too fussed about the sidewall, just letting people know the F1 Asy2 isn't that stiff for a high performance tyre so 94Y might be a better bet for those that want that - but the 91Y will be stiffer than the EfficientGrips I have on right now, and I want to try and retain the comfort these give.
 
Whenever I've had PS3s I've loved them and they have been great on roads and tracks in wet and dry. Did my fastest Nurburgring lap with these tyres too!

I've recently been using Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta and they are superb for the price, classed as a premium tyre, excellent grip in wet or dry, an one really sexy tread pattern.

I need 4 new tyres soon and will be getting 4 of these unless I can find 225/40/18 PS3s cheaper.
 
Not sure what to think about the Assy 2's, had them on a year, comfort seems good, grip in dry good, wet mostly ok with just the odd time here and there where its spun, like tonight, ok its been slashing with rain all day, coming out of a roundabout not crazy fast but traction light starts flashing :/

Maybe there just isn't a tyre that would grip 100% in the wet? Assy 2's seem to get good wet write ups

Its a but of a gamble, in a way id like to try something different, but don't want to get something worse, really need to buy them soon though!
 
As an all rounder, the Assy 2's are hard to beat. It really does have good wet grip, the only thing that is different about them to others I've tried is that they are less progressive (less warning) in letting go in the wet. So grip grip grip grip, then no grip, the others will start to slide a little before totally letting go, but be assured that the point at which the Assy2's let go in the wet is higher than others I've compared.

Sure, the PS3 will have slightly better grip in the dry, but the Assy 2 is a quieter tyre. PSS dry grip is outstanding, but softer compound and costs more.

Conti 5's are noisier than Assy2, and tend not to have as good dry or wet grip levels as the Assy2.

In the absolutely soaking wet, the Assy2 on all 4 wheels is the most difficult to get the car sideways on lift off oversteer. I have to have much higher entry speeds, with a more aggressive flick in order to de-stabilise the car. The Contis are easy in comparison, with the PS3's in the middle. Couldn't tell you about dry conditions, I hate chewing tyres up in the dry :)

I have to agree. I know last time I was in the same boat and the Assy's won me over. I can get them for £184.00 the pair, fitted and balanced, but at F1 Autocentres :/

May hunt around for a mobile place close to that price, last time they forgot to balance them and told me the tracking was fine when it clearly was not!

Thanks to everyone for comments and I am 99% there on decision, would also be good to have four the same and they seem to last a long time :)
