Sold the C5, here's the new C6

So I sold the old allroad on as she was a bit long in the tooth and I hadn't anticipated driving to the alps twice a year in it.

So out with the old

In with the new!

3.0tdi, leather, sat nav, phone prep, so much nicer to drive and sit in in general. And these 17" wheels use the same tyres as the old allroad so I can use the spare winter tyres I have

And its wayyy more efficient than the old 2.5 tdi, 40 odd mpg at 130 kph :shock:

It'll get some summer wheels and maybe some rear tints, potentially a roof rack for skis etc ooh and a map hello 300 bhp!

Some questions though.

Recalls, are there any, Ive noticed a bit of water passenger side rear is there a recall to remedy this?

It struggles to start first thing, it doesnt struggle to turn over it just doesn't fire straight away - glow plugs perhaps? did a 160 mile round trip the weekend I got her with no change.

I get a battery low warning every now and again if im just sitting in it listening to the radio with the engine off for 15mins or so... seems a bit extreme for just a little time with the engine off and the socking great big battery in the boot.
SO any common battery drains and solutions?
I've read about a CD changer issue?
A wing mirror heater issue, I thought these were intelligent and just came on in the cold, apparently you can leave them on?
Any others?

If its the original battery then it most likely needs replacing, there have been a fair few recalls over the years on the C6 chassis only your Audi dealer will be able to tell you if all the recalls have been done on the car. Their was a recall about water getting onto the MMI system and damaging the AMP.

The recall for the water on NS Rear is to do with the pipe for the rear washer coming apart and dumping water on the MMI navigation system causing major and costly damage. Would suggest you sit in the boot and get someone to activate the rear washer. If there is any suggestion of water going into the area behind the panel or the washer jet is not as strong as it should be get it looked at quickly and do not use the washer until it is fixed. Also the washer hose can separate under the from passenger seat flooding the bluetooth module (if you have bluetooth phone).

Wing mirror heating is controlled by the mirror switch on the driver's door. Needs to be in central "0" position to turn heating on. It is not intelligent but is ignition controlled

Invest in a decent battery charger, something from the CTEK range (3.5 upwards) and charge the battery for a few days if possible, could be that it's fine and just needs some deep conditioning and certainly don't replace unless it won't take a charge. The charger will serve you well for many years and is a great investment.

My Jag's had the same battery for 9yrs and it's still going with a deep condition every couple of months

TBH I'm not going to worry the garage can sort it out, I'm going to take it to audi for the rear windscreen washer recall asap, so hopefully between the two I'll make some progress

plus that'll be an excuse to use the RS more

Off to an actual audi garage today, I usually avoid these like the plague BUT I reckon the recall repair to the washer done a few years ago wasn't very good, and to prove it my rear wiper has broken... LOL

Then its back to the place I bought it from on Friday for some glow plugs to hopefully sort my cold start - the old allroad struggled to start in the Alps after being left for a week, fairly understandable, so I need this one to be tip top.

Yeh I seem to have a problem with my electronic folding mirrors and the heating seems to be intermittent. Anyone now of any recalls on this?

When I bought my 2005 A6 Avant in December, the battery was seemingly dead and the alternator was not charging it on a long drive. Since putting in the new battery it has sat playing music for close to an hour and barely effected the indicated battery level so might be worth a change if not had one since new.

Right, Audi say the rear washer pipe is not to blame, does that suggest its the seal around the lights then? I was going to change them for LED ones anyway

Cars in for warranty work on the rear washer and investigation on water ingress at the rear, they seem open to a deal if the lights need replacing so I can swap to some LED items.

AND (predictably I've got some new wheels to go on (when the rs4 stops costing me money lol))

Tried to put the new wheels on this today after finally getting the tyres.

Shame I didnt check the centre bore - it seems B8's got a 66.6mm centre bore, so I've ordered some spigot rings.

In the meanwhile heres how I'm hoping it'll look:

19x8.5 et43 with 245 40 19 tyres.

Never using mytyres.co.uk ever again!

They're **** essentially didnt dispatch my tyres for 4 days then, when I cancelled my order, they HAD been dispatched all of a sudden and I could not get a refund as the tyres had been sent out... proper ****!

Any hoo spigot rings and centre caps came so I got the wheels on!

Changed the Rear lights to OEM LED units

Looks so much better I think and I no longer have water pooling in the arch even with all the rain this weekend woop!

I think the tow bar retracts behind the bumper but I like it there so no one can reverse into the bumper lol.

There's a thing behind the tail lights which I think does it.

Boo on the lights, water ingress just shouldn't be a problem in the a8 or allroad.

Coming soon spacers, and oem front drls and xenons (I have self levelling headlights and washers because of the suspension (I think))

Water ingress shouldn't be a problem but it is, they even suffer from the drain holes blocking up and causing water to seep into the cabin.
How long has Audi known that being an issue?

If you got air suspension mate then you should have self levelling headlights.

Surprised the LED's where not installed on the car, by default on the A6 range if you had Xenons specified you got the LED tail lights. Wonder if someone retrofitted the Xenons on the car.

Yeah I know, I don't have xenons that's why it's on to coming soon list

and because I already have levelling headlights and washers hopefully it's wont be too expensive to retro fit but worth it!

Well if your going for Xenons you may as well go for the DRL LED version, I would fit some myself just got too many projects on the A6 at the moment, would also like the facelift front bumper.

Xenons and drls are the plan maybe with AFS I also need to sort out iPod connection I have a dock in the arm rest but no music compatibility.

Facelift bumpers are cool, not sure there was a change for allroads though.

AFS is cool but AFS2 is cooler. Not sure what the difference is but I got AFS2 apparently.
Noticed it working really well on the way to Lands End couple of weeks ago.

Could try the Dension unit, I got one in my 8 and it seems to work really well. Both iPod, USB and RC leads.

Getting ready for winter in the allroad now -

Recent purchases:
Thule wing bar edge.
Atera Nova 6 Ski rack.
H&R spacers.
New winter tyres soon.

Probably going to have some fun with some plastidip on the winter wheels too as well as a nice fresh service and health check before the Alps for a few skiing trips.

The warranty work had already been carried out and was not the source of the problem, water was getting into the boot lid and fried the wiper motor, I got the motor replaced under warranty by the garage I bought it from.

I find water gets in if I pressure wash the rear of the car - I replaced all the tail lights with OEM led units this has stopped water getting into the rear wings but not into the tailgate itself - I think its either a window seal or the seal around the wiper motor itself.

Tested out my Thule wing bar edges and Atera Ski rack over the weekend. The Thule bars are an impressive package and even includes a hex screwdriver with a torque handle so you can’t over tighten the bolts that tighten the bars to the roof rails 8).
I was less impressed by the Atera ski rack an altogether more flimsy product, it'll do the job just fine but I can't help thinking it might have been worth paying for the Thule option despite being nearly double the price. It does, however, come with block to raise the ski rack up if you have big bindings which is a good job because this was the clearance between the roof and the binding without a raising block:

I was fairly certain that with a bit of air flowing over the roof that the binding could easily hit the roof, ironically this probably wouldn’t have been a problem if I’d have gone for less efficient roof bars lol… The thing is I don’t really want to use the raising blocks because that’ll ruin the point of getting said efficient roof bars so I came up with a cunning plan! I popped the blocks under the rear ski rack only which will hopefully keep air resistance to a minimum, moves the bindings well away from the roof and doesn’t look completely stupid

I also found my dad some winter wheels, OEM B8 s4 wheels with winter tyres for £375 which was a bit of a result! Bolt straight up but the fitments pretty terrible:

They need new tyres and spacers really but there’s no convincing some people…

Gravel drives suck for big heavy jacks lol.

I also had a chance to test the ski rack with skis on, and hot damn it was brilliant! I was expecting all sorts of really annoying whistling noises and vibrations and none of that showed it’s head, the only difference is there’s more wind noise which with the radio on a low volume blends into the back ground.

All in all very impressed – just the quality of the Atera roof rack is slightly questionable.

Got my spacers on, H&R 10mm rear and 8mm front, it could have probably taken 2mm more on each axle at least but theres a lack of people on the internet doing anything to C6 allroads so I had to guess what would work lol.

For reference these are genuine Audi rotors, from a B8 A4, 19x8.5 with 245 40 19 tyres with an original offset of ET43 so with spacers they are current ET33 on the rear and ET35 on the fronts with no issues 8)

Thanks mate - there's very few modded allroads I've barely found any, the odd one pops up on instagram but thats it.

Nothing crazy just some new wheels and keeping it clean, they are very good cars for just being used but I find it lacks any character which means I don't love it like I did my C5. It'll waft comfortably and silently down the motorway at 85 and return 40 mpg and thats all I need from a daily.

Seems that quite a few people have mentioned that it's not too thrilling to drive but I suppose that's not what it's designed for. I see you have a B8 S4 now, is that to replace the B5 RS4 ? Now the S4 is a car that I would love to own but rather out of my price range for the moment !
