Pre-purchase questions - 2009 1.6 petrol Audi A3 sport s line

Do you have a link to the car advert itself? Price seems fine for an 09 plate.

It maybe because most people find the 1.6's a little underpowered? I don't know, what kind of information are you after?

I have an 09 Audi 1.6 myself. Had it from almost new. Price seems about right to me.

hi mate, i have the 1.6 petrol engine and as people say its not the most powerful engine in the world but it isn't as bad as some make out. in terms of living with it, its been brilliant for me *touchwood* no problems at all. motorway driving at 70 i get around 40mpg. you might develop a tapping sound on start up at some point, but thats is solved with a simple oil and filter change, so nothing to worry about.

Audi tried replacing the 8v 1.6 with the 16v 1.6 FSI, then dropped the latter when they introduced the 1.4 TSI.

So the engine in the car you are looking at is the older, less powerful 1.6. It depends what you are used to, but many complain it's a little gutless. The reason you aren't finding anything out there is that not much goes wrong with these - it's a tried and tested unit that VAG have had around for ages, so if it's been serviced properly, you'd be exceptionally unlucky to have trouble with it. They don't generally suffer from the cracked heads, injector issues, dpf problems etc that you see for some of the more popular diesel A3's.

I have an older (2005) 1.6 FSI and whilst is is marginally more powerful and economical, there are many more stories around about engine crapness, even though (for example) mine has a timing chain and "yours" has a belt.

The only other difference I can think of is that the 8v 1.6 has a five speed box (If I recall correctly) and that's no hardship at all - the six speed fitted to mine is utterly pointless given the wide rev range and pretty evenly spread (lack of) power and torque.

Give it a good test drive and make sure you can cope with how sluggish it is and in particular, find a road (not hard) with a bad surface to ensure you can stand the filling loosening ride quality.

Edit - I think these petrols are underrated - lots of people fail to take servicing and repairs and the fact that petrol is cheaper per litre into account when they do their sums.

I have a 59 reg A3 S-Line 1.6 Petrol, although the engine isnt the biggest and not the most powerful, it is a cracking car, smooth acceleration, great mpg on motorway driving can easy get 400 miles out the tank, plus my insurance was cheap as only 24 so its bang on... Great car and cracking engine. I cannot comment for most other engines having only driven the 2.0 TDI and that is the perfect engine.

If you could afford or get insured I would recommend 1.8T. I also have 1.6 FSI and to be fair it's good for my daily drive around town with reasonable mpg however if I could have got insured defo would pick 1.8T.

Overall just like above ^ 1.6 is underrated if you are not after power or remaps in future then it's perfect and reliable.

Yeah same here when i was looking at the time it adds almost a grand on top, as Persian says very reliable i you want a great looking Audi scratch that i also driven my partners 1.9TDi A3 shame they dont do that any more thats a fairly good engine for an A3
