Hi all,

I am currently looking into buying a audi a4 (b6) cabriolet around February/march time and I'm still undecided on the 1.8t or 2.5tdi engine. Either way I will be remapping the ecu as they arent really quick as standard. I'm just looking for info from you guys who have remapped these engines... Any issues? How does the clutch hold up? What sort of fuel consumption are you getting?

I believe with a remap both of these engines should be close performance wise to the 3.0

Thanks
James

I have the 1.8t (190) remapped. Fuel economy is worse for me in any other situation other than bimbling around under 60mph. Annoyingly it seems worse on the m-way at 70mph but hey ho the extra power is worth it in my opinion. I guess I'm getting around 29-30mpg average at the moment. If you go for the 1.8t I'd have a spare set of coil packs in the boot as it seems common these go during remap / not long after if they aren't relatively new. Mine went 5 days after remap. Clutch, so far so good but it will wear quicker as it has 70ft/lb more torque going through it. It just means I'll have to change it a little sooner than on a non mapped 1.8t.

I can't comment on the 2.5tdi I'm afraid.

The 2.5 Diesel engine in these cars hasn't got as much potential than some other VAG diesel engines due to limitations of the fuel pump. The 1.8T is in a different league in terms of potential, just go for a later Drive by wire version as it's cheaper/easier to map.

Economy wise, MPG should not be worse on the 1.8T, especially cruising at 70, but it will improve slightly on the 2.5.

Pumps can be cheated with larger injector nozzles and when done well they are torque monsters ! My v6 tdi will give anything on the road a good run for the money...

Hi jamespheely,

The Audi A4 (B6) cabriolet is great choice of car. We had a 2.5 V6 TDI here as one of our development vehicles a few years back. With the front wheel drive variant providing 163 PS and 180 from the Quattro both options will receive good gains in both torque and power whilst also achieving additional fuel economy. Piece of advice though, don’t go for the auto transmission, it gets bogged down and massively hinders the vehicle.

Personally I’d go for the 2.5 V6 TDI as this engine is exceptionally well balanced and extremely smooth. You could sit at 4000 RPM and it sounds like it’s purring at idle!

We remap both the 1.8T & 2.5 TDI engines. However, we only provide a tuning box for the 2.5 and not the 1.8T. Our remaps and tuning boxes are custom programmed to meet your specific requirements. There are lots you can do with both vehicles.

Some tuning companies can go overboard to the detriment of your transmission and clutch. So whoever you choose to increase the performance of your A4, make sure you absolutely grill them to pieces!

Whichever way you go, both engines are great and I’d definitely recommend modifying them.

Once you have purchased your new car, please feel free to give our technical team a call 01245 924 400 for a chat or visit our website Diesel Tuning | Diesel Engine Tuning | TDI Tuning.

Happy shopping!

Turns out my A4 B5 2.5tdi fwd 150BHP is slightly too old to remap, needs a chip?
I'm planning on blanking the EGR. Signs pointing to it being stuck slightly open... Slightly smoky, smelly black sooty tailpipes, inlet manifold hot near EGR pipe.
What should I do with the car? Was planning on cleaning out the inlet manifolds

There are people on ebay that do "chip" the AFB ECU, it involves soldering new chips on the ECU or adding new sockets so chips can be swapped at a later date. Maps are written in HI and LOW, basically the maps are written in 2 packets onto the chips so the ecu can halve 512mb between the 2 eeproms. It's rather inexpensive to write them PCL chips but they are getting rare and you need a good hot air soldering station and steady hands in order to do a decent job and not to lift the contact pads off the board. Best leave an electronist/computer specialist that has experience at soldering then get someone to read the map off them 2 chips (willem programmer works) then adjust and modify boost, driver wish and a few more limiters in the tune for good gains.
AFB has rather large injector nozzles and crude maps so gains are between 30 to 50 Bhp depending on how good the mapper is and how healthy the engine... I could get you a mapped ECU for about £250 with IMMo delete but i am too busy so it won't happen too soon...

Hi foursprungdugtechnique,

As Adamss24 has mentioned, if you take the soldering option, the solderer would clearly need to be confident and competent. If it goes wrong, the ecu will be damaged beyond repair!

Alternatively, we could re-map your ECU to increase performance and do an EGR delete at the same time. Although, we are based in Chelmsford, Essex so no doubt far from convenient for you.

We do provide a CanBus driven VP series tuning box for your A4 2.5 V6 TDI AFB/AKN engine.

If you would like some more information or just a general chat regarding your tuning options, then please feel free to call us on 01245 924 400.

Steve
